Talking Veganism During Lunch at Work
This has been living in my head rent free since lunch today so I'd figure that I'd share it. π₯²
I was asked why I'm vegan by a friendly colleague. He's generally quite based, so I was happy to have this conversation with him, and I said outright that I'm standing up for animal liberation. He said that he often deals with cognitive dissonance surrounding this topic, and that his partner is also on a journey in reducing her consumption of animal products. I was happy to hear this, and was looking forward to further discussing this topic.
Somebody else from the table overheard our conversation and asked how I manage to get enough protein -- she said that she tried being vegetarian before and that she felt tired all the time. She has some sort of thyroid issue that prevents her from eating a lot of soy, and that the heavy carb content in beans was taking a toll on her. I said that my own cultural cuisine (and many others globally) uses a lot of lentils and legumes in general as a protein source. Someone else from the table said that this type of protein has poor bioavailability. I wasn't really sure what to say in the moment, and the conversation sort of died out after that. The person with the thyroid issue ended by saying that she rides her bike to work everyday and that's all she can do (I'm assuming she was talking about mitigating environmental consequences of animal product consumption).
I feel like the conversation ended on a negative note, and I feel bad and guilty somehow. Like I should have said something and stood up for animal liberation. I just wasn't expecting the conversation to take that turn, and in general I'm on the quiet side. One of the people at the table also has some sort of severe gluten intolerance and other issues, so they can only eat a few food items. So I was also afraid of implying something that they perceived as ableist. :(
