Discussion Base Station 2.0s are restocked and available RIGHT NOW in the US. These are half the price that HTC sells them for, likely the cheapest we will ever be able to get brand new Base Stations for the foreseeable future. Grab em while you can!

Discussion Thank you Steam Support - authorised a replacement cable just before the sunsetting/discount announcement

What's amazing about this is that I got just the headset second hand very recently, and it showed clear signs of something wrong with the connection - pixels and black screen that restored after moving the cable etc.

A few quick messages to Steam Support (I didn't say it was second hand, literally just that I have 'this headset') and after a few troubleshooting tips that obviously didn't work - next thing you know I have a replacement cable on the way.

It's not even just the tether either, but the trident as well!

I'm seeing everyone complain and moan about the Steam Frame and Valve in general... but from my perspective that's some amazing service.

Looking forward to when I eventually get my Frame (at the back of the waitlist I reckon) but until then... big thanks to Valve and Steam Support.

Now to jump back into VR.

Discussion What prescription lenses?

Just got an index, what's the best brand for lenses? Looking at vroptician, honsvr, widmovr, etc. I got vr rock lenses when I tried a psvr2 a while back but they broke, looking for something better quality. Vr optician is $90, honsvr is $50, widmo is $65, which one is worth the price?

Discussion Six Years as a Valve Index Owner — Disappointed by Valve's Handling of a Failed Base Station

I wanted to share my recent experience with Valve Support, particularly for those of you who still own and regularly use the Valve Index.

I purchased my complete Valve Index VR Kit directly from Steam in October 2020 for approximately $1,000. Nearly six years later, I'm still using it regularly and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Until recently, I've had very few complaints about the hardware.

Unfortunately, one of my Base Station 2.0 units suddenly developed the dreaded blinking red LED.

I spent considerable time troubleshooting the problem. I power-cycled the station, swapped power adapters with my functioning station, isolated the defective unit, and verified that my headset continued tracking normally using the remaining base station.

When none of that resolved the issue, I opened a Steam Support ticket, provided the defective unit's serial number, and attached a complete SteamVR diagnostic report.

Valve confirmed that the blinking red LED indicated a laser failure, that no further troubleshooting or firmware updates could resolve it, and that the base station needed to be replaced.

Fair enough. Electronics fail. I understand that.

Here's where my disappointment begins.

I explicitly acknowledged that my equipment was nearly six years old and well outside its warranty period. I wasn't demanding a free replacement or suggesting Valve had any legal obligation to provide one.

Instead, I politely asked whether Valve might consider a goodwill replacement or another accommodation for a longtime customer who had invested in its premium VR hardware.

The response was essentially a standard warranty denial.

I followed up, expressing my disappointment and asking whether my request could receive further consideration.

I also raised another concern: Valve's own Base Station 2.0 is listed as out of stock on Steam.

If the company confirms that my hardware is beyond repair but doesn't have replacement hardware available for purchase, what exactly is an existing Index owner supposed to do?

After another exchange, Steam Support confirmed the following:

  • Valve is no longer manufacturing Index products.
  • Valve says it has no plans to discontinue technical support for Index owners.
  • Steam Support has no additional information about replacement inventory beyond what's publicly visible in the Steam Store.
  • Warranty eligibility remains subject to the original warranty period.
  • Since Steam has no base stations available, Valve recommends checking with the VR community for compatible replacements.

That last point particularly bothered me.

I purchased a $1,000 premium VR system directly from Valve, and when an essential component failed, the manufacturer's solution was effectively to tell me to ask the VR community where I could buy replacement hardware.

To be clear, I understand that six years is a respectable lifespan for electronic equipment. I don't expect Valve to manufacture the Index forever, and I don't believe an expired warranty entitles me to a complimentary replacement.

But I do think there's a difference between enforcing a warranty and demonstrating a meaningful commitment to customers who invested in your hardware ecosystem.

I would have appreciated some flexibility, a discounted replacement, a refurbished unit, or even a direct recommendation for an authorized supplier of compatible hardware.

Instead, the entire exchange felt rigid, impersonal, and dismissive.

I've since learned that compatible HTC Base Station 2.0 units are available through other channels, and I'm exploring those options.

My disappointment isn't really about having to spend money on a replacement. It's about how Valve handled the situation.

I've been a Steam customer for years, and I genuinely love my Index. I use it regularly and have no desire to abandon it. But this experience has made me think twice about investing another $1,000 in Valve hardware without understanding how the company intends to support customers when that hardware is eventually discontinued.

I've closed my support case. I'm not looking to organize a boycott or demand special treatment. I simply wanted to share my experience so other Index owners, and anyone considering Valve's newer VR hardware, have another perspective on what long-term ownership can look like.

I'm curious: Have other Index owners experienced similar failures recently? And has anyone received a goodwill replacement or meaningful assistance from Valve after their warranty expired?

I'd genuinely like to hear how Valve has handled these situations for others.

UPDATE — October 15, 2026: An Interesting Development

Shortly after receiving Valve's final response today, I learned through the Reddit VR community that Valve Base Station 2.0 units were reportedly available for purchase again directly through Steam, apparently at a reduced price.

I find this particularly frustrating.

In today's response, Steam Support specifically told me that Valve had no base stations available and recommended that I consult the VR community for compatible replacement hardware.

Ironically, it was that very community that alerted me to the apparent availability of replacement units through Valve itself.

Why wasn't I advised of this possibility by Steam Support today?

I understand that inventory can change quickly and that support representatives may not have advance notice of restocks. However, given that my entire support inquiry concerned a failed base station and the inability to obtain a replacement, I would have expected more helpful guidance from the manufacturer.

If the inventory was replenished after Bruce responded, that's understandable. But the fact that I had to learn about it through Reddit rather than Valve only reinforces my disappointment with the overall support experience.

For me, this was never simply about receiving something for free. It was about receiving thoughtful, practical assistance from a company whose premium hardware I've enjoyed and supported for nearly six years.

I'm glad replacement units may once again be available. I just wish Valve Support had been more helpful in getting me to that solution.

Self-Promotion (Developer) I made a mod for Scanner Sombre to fix it's horrible outdated controls.

Post image
35 Upvotes

This is a mod for the VR mode of Scanner Sombre that replaces teleport-only movement with smooth thumbstick locomotion, and adds turning, jumping, running, wrist-twist spread control, comfort settings and an in-game controls page.

Tested on Valve Index and Meta Quest 3 via Steam Link (SteamVR), through the whole game.

Video of the mod:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkbhSH-tjPk

You can download it here:
https://www.nexusmods.com/scannersombre/mods/5

Notice you need to use a slightly older version of Bepinex for this mod.

Scanner Sombre was the very first VR game that I completed. I was new to VR and didn't realize just how bad the controls were. I revisited it a few times over the years and it was REALLY showing it's age, so I put my knowhow into creating a mod for the game and fixing all the issues.

Hopefully if any of you have picked up Scanner Sombre in a humble bundle or something and didn't like the controls this will make the game more playable for you.

I use the Index as my daily driver so I have a custom controller binding to remove thumb clicks and remap the controls to work with the mod. Make sure to assign that binding if you give this a try.

Discussion GGs

I was SO excited that they were on sale and back in stock since both of my controllers are broken, I NEED replacements, and they refused RMAs. I added them to my cart, and it just doesn't go through. Looked for used ones on Ebay and Marketplace, nothing for under $400. It's so frustrating man, when Frame was announced they said they were discussing internally about outsourcing production for basestation supported hardware; but I guess that fell through. I wouldn't be so upset about this if we could just flat out BUY a Steam Frame, but I'm on the waitlist and could be waiting until 2028 for all we know.

RIP Index
RIP true PCVR support

Question/Support Major "Connection" or BT issues on Windows 11 - Digital Forensics Scientist clueless...

I'am posting here because I'am desperate by now.

I'am trying to run Elite Dangerous (or any other Game) on my Valve Index - which worked flawless like 1 1/2 years ago. I did not touched it in a while.

When connecting the Index, at first it wasnt detected at all by SteamVR. Base Stations are green and the Headset turned from blue to green (staying at green).

After random troubleshooting, a lot of try and errors - I managed to get it running (for a really short period).

Than, the Base Stations seemed to "malfunction" they weren't detected anymore (SteamVR said it is BT connection issue) but even restarting them or powercycle the Headset wouldn't fix it.

That's the "stable" state now.

After removing any USB device except of Mouse and Keyboard, removing every driver of unconnceted devices, deactivating Core Isolation and Blacklisted Driver (and also basically any Windows Defender feature), disabling USB power safe and PCI-e Power safe features in my Powerplan as well as disallow Windows to shut down any USB device trough device manager:

The Index wil be recognised now - quite stable. Sometimes it works for a short period, but than (especially when I take it off - the base stations disappear, wont connect again. I was never able to play a game - never...)

Title is not a rage bait - I'am a Digital Forensics Scientist, normally I fix such issues quite easily. Despite the fact I'am more software and network focused, I'am typically not clueless. But this Valve Index drives me crazy!

System:

- Intel i9 9900 K

- RTX 3080 Asus ROG

- Asus ROG Strix Z390 M-Gaming Mainboard

- 32GB DDR4 RAM

- Gaming / Steam runs on a Samsung Pro NVME M2

- OS: unmodified Windows 11

Please someone tell me, there is a solution or a somewhat reliable workflow to get this freakin Headset running...

This is really unbelievable to be honest.

Question/Support Red light of death on both base stations?

Post image
159 Upvotes

Just got the slow blinking red light of death on both of my base stations at the same time.. (within a day or so of each other)

Is that a common occurrence? I feel like the odds would be pretty low unless they’re designed to fail after certain timeframe.

(They’re both the original stations I got in the kit back in 2023)

Index Mod Index Controllers External Tethered Battery Bank?

Has anyone made an external solution to dead batteries on the Index controllers? I’m hoping there’s a good solution that allows for good arm/hand movement without troublesome long cables getting in the way.

I’m thinking a small power bank, small enough to strap onto a forearm or biceps with a wrist or armband, with a cable that runs to the unit. Should work, right???

Question/Support Glitchy audio and image

anyone else recently experiencing audio glitches, pixel distortion, or images fully cutting out? it was like a day after the steam frame released that my headset started acting up, not to put it on any updates for the steam frame it’s just kinda ironic timing.
i only ask this because my partner who also has a index brought up the same issues to me when we played a few nights ago, told me he was getting a bunch of random rainbow pixels everywhere and that the images of the game cut out every now and then (thankfully no audio issues for him).
i bought a new tether just incase it accidentally kinked it on accident somewhere (but i kept the old one nicely wound up and stored like i typically do, so this honestly seemed like the most expensive option rather than a definite fix).
so until that’s in, i’m just curious if this has been a recent issue for anyone else, or if anyone knows a fix to this issue!

Discussion Thank you Valve!

My tether cable Is getting really bad. So I just now bought a new one.The green wires are showing near the headset and like 2 feet lower is a section that is also showing cables to the point where if I position the cable a certain way, the feed to my headset cuts out. Let me just say, Thank you valve for still having the tethers in stock. I’d be lost if I wasn’t able to get one from them directly because I refuse to buy one from scalpers. Even though I don’t need the trident part, nothing wrong with having a spare.

Atleast Valve keeps some of the index stuff still In stock. I’m glad. Anyone else happy that some of the stuff is still in stock?

Question/Support Video works but no audio, audio works but no video

So a day or two ago I unplugged my computer from everything and took it with me to a different location, came back home, plugged in my valve index into the same ports, and now run into this problem.

When I start SteamVr while not wearing the headset, the display is the gray cloudy screen while audio still plays in the headset. If I stand up it manages to load the screen into the SteamVR homeworld, but no sound comes through. It seems almost as if the two inputs and outputs are opposite of one another so when one works, the other does not. I’ve seen older Reddit posts talking about this issue but none with any answers. I’ve tried updating drivers, deleting device manager audio settings and reloading them, uninstalling steamvr and reinstalling it. Nothing has seemed to work so far. Any advice here to help me along? I uninstalled no hardware, did update my game drivers to see if that would help, but beyond that nothing is different from earlier in the week before I unplugged everything.

Question/Support Fix headset?

Hey y’all. Getting an error on my headset that says tether disconnected at headset. Started when I took my headset off to go for a piss and when I came back everything was greyed out with no sound. Went through all the troubleshooting available from steam and even got sent a new cable but it didn’t work. Anyone have a fix or am I fucked?

Question/Support Smashed my Index Controller while playing

Thumbnail

I smashed my left Index Controller into a wall. Everything still seemed to work, but there was a lot of rattling inside.

I took apart the top section, including the PCB, and found these plastic pieces. Ofc. i found 1 Screw in the Controller. The other Screw was in the Handle.

They may just be structural supports, but I am not sure why they have pegs on the side. It looks like something may have been attached to them. Does anyone know what these parts are for, and whether I should fully disassemble the controller to glue them back into place?

I also have a 3D Printer and could maybe redesign it... if it is necessary.
