Question What makes the culture at UVic so hostile to students?

I'm a former UVic student, I attended 2018-2019 before dropping out. I had a very traumatic time at UVic, and with time I realized UVic and the way the admin (especially in ECS) treated me was the exception, not the norm at academic universities in North America. Anyways I met with a psychiatrist for the first time yesterday, mostly to work through my UVic experience, and they told me they had not heard of a university being like this before. I was surprised by that reaction, but then I remembered how UVic handled things like the Bamfield crash survivors (which happened while I was attending) and how they completely dropped the ball. Or all the stuff with the overdose. Or other students coming forward about their hostile experiences where UVic admin were self contradictory and unsupportive or just fucking shit up for people who really need support? And the posts pinned in this very subreddit about the new AI academic policy and the admin's bungling of that.

Like, truly, the more I think about it, the more I'm confused and angry. What was/is going on at UVic? Why is the culture so hostile to students, especially to students who need support the most? And I'm not talking mental health support, I mean basic responsibility to students to act in their best interests, provide truthful and accurate information and assistance etc. It's depressing to see it's gotten worse in the years since I've left and that the rot has hurt other students similarly.

Rant Put away your weights at the CARSA!

The amount of times I’ve gone to the gym and there’s just random weights lying around on the floor is ridiculous. If you are strong enough to lift the weight, you are strong enough to put them away. If not, you’re ego lifting and you’re a loser.

Advice Needed Should I drop out

• Upvotes

I already failed 2 midterms, including csc226. The majority of the class got at least 20% higher than me. I know this because every single exam I've taken has resulted in me having the lowest grades or one of the lower grades. I have failed multiple courses already, and do not want to fail more; I don't want to spend any more time and money that is necessary. Lecture slides are hard for me to grasp, so I have to turn to ai, but you know how that goes.

Also, for csc226, I heard that if you do bad on an exam, the grade will be dropped? So for my exam will it get dropped and I can pass the course.

Advice Needed Doctor’s note for missed midterm?

I unfortunately had to miss my midterm this week because I was so sick I could barely breathe (I have asthma so it always hits me harder than others). I emailed my prof that I would be missing a midterm that day and they replied that I would need a doctor’s note for the absence to be excused. My understanding of the UVic academic concession policy is that for unexpected illness-related absences, documentation is not required, but maybe profs can override this?? I’m just not sure what to do at this point. I do not have a doctor in the province so it would be pretty hard to obtain a note from one. I also unfortunately didn’t see the reply email sent by the prof until today (they sent it two days ago) and am now doing better and can breathe (yay!), so I am not even sure how I would go about getting a doctor’s note even if I had a doctor.

Advice Needed ECE265

I was never 'great' at calculus in my own opinion... And this is much more of a math class than it is engineering. I got through calc relying heavily on MSAC but since this is an eng course I don't imagine they'd be able to help.

Michael is a nice enough guy and clearly is invested in teaching to some degree but his lectures just sound like static noise to me. I'm not sure it's actually worth the time to attend.

It's also hard to find extra resources since this isn't something like fundamental physics where every school in the world teaches essentially the same curriculum. I'm sure the material is still very universal in EE but it seems the way UVic goes about presenting it is unique and makes it (at least for me) a lot harder to find external resources.

How do you get through this class??

Fwiw I can see that it's useful knowledge and probably has very practical and important applications. However the way it's taught is just way too far removed from reality for it to be engaging for me. Like when Michael says that 'bibo unstable systems are how people die'... Like where tffff is that coming from? This is why I say it feels much more like a math course than an eng course

Question Manitoban studying in bc

Hey guys, im in gr 12 in Winnipeg and I’m planning to move out for uni next year.

I want to meet new people, reinvent myself, have lots of fun, party and be able to become independent.

I am applying to UBCv and Uvic, and I already submitted by app to uvic and im in the process of my personal profile for ubc.

@ uvic, sci my first, and social sciences my secon
@ubcv im debating whether to put applied bio or science as my #1, and will probably put arts as my backup

I will also probably apply to western health sci or sci.

i have a avg of around ~91%.

Wondering if uvic is a good choice for me, I want to be in a bigger city as well cause I love running.

Opinions on ubc or uvic?

I would need residence for all 4 years, so I don’t know if one or the other is better for that. off campus residence sounds a pain, and I wouldn’t be able to connect with other students.

I have always dreamed of a bigger university for the experience, but I think a smaller one has pros too.

Would love some more uni reccomendations, and to hear ur comments.
