I'm 36m, and I'd say it feels a bit like everyone you interact with is on their own island. You can see them over there, but there's just so much stuff between you, you end up feeling pretty alone, even when you can see them.

People just randomly come out with stuff, like a colleague said the other day that they 'don't really enjoy life anymore' - and I thought that was a pretty big statement to make, yet, I understood what he was getting at.

We have to watch people coming out with stuff like that...it really could mean more than it appears.

The thing to watch for is if they suddenly stop saying it without any visible improvement.

It usually means they've accepted that it's not going to change and have begun to actively formulate plans to go on their own terms.

That was me. I was always the outspoken voice at work about redundancies, outsourcing, low pay etc etc until it got me a formal warning, a poor performance review and several meetings with managers over my "attitude". I then shut up to try to keep my job, and after about 6 months of that, I was sat in my garage looking around to see what would hold my weight long enough to get the job done. I've been off work (fit notes after reaching out to medical professionals) since then.
