Video Game Follie (Warframe)

I think Follie's design is a really unique one among your usual characters in mainstream games. Her design is mainly inspired by three things:

A Rorschach inkblot test: given her ink-control powers, her own face being similar to a Rorschach test, and her color palette being all black and white. Her head also vaguely resembles that of a lepidopteran.

A femme Pierrot clown: her helmet resembles the shape of those pointy hats worn by clowns, her shoes do too, and her monochrome scheme fits the "sad clown" character (with some references to Pennywise thrown in).

Even her chubby body fits in with the clown design, given that a lot of clowns wear extra clothes (or are actually fat) to appear bigger for comical purposes.

A paintress: her relationship with ink and her in-game skills are all related to Follie painting objects and bringing them to life. Her subtitle in game is "The Shadowgrapher" which is a drawing technique that involves the use of light and shadows.

Even the way you obtain her in-game is by playing a game of hide and seek while you paint pictures.

Her animations do show her merrier side despite her macabre appearance, showing she has confidence in her own image.

And honestly, I really like that she's a chubby woman and a sexy one at that. It can be a bit tiring seeing the same body type for female characters in media all the time.

One of my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! archetypes, and that's partly due to its excellent design. Each character is quite unique, but they share a colorful, circus-like aesthetic that I simply love.

1-3. George Washington
4-8. John Adams
9. Chester Arthur
10-13. Ulysses S Grant

1861 and 1879 books by Kanagaki Robun

Arthur illustration by Toshitsugu Nakayama (around 1881-1885)

I like seeing U.S. historical events portrayed by different countries. This Japanese portrayal of American history sounds like something from a badass manga and considering Japan opened to the west not that long before this was published

Comic Book Lament from the Kai-Sei Godzilla comics (IDW)

You know it's not every day you see a Kaiju with a human mind attached to it and honestly the design is really rad (and horrifying)

i love the fact it doesn't look like a traditional kaiju in the godzilla universe more like a demon you'd see in a anime or something yet the more details you get about her the more horrifying her design becomes such as the black parts of her skin possibly being her original skin warped and mangled into a unreconizable form especially thanks to her experiments with Kai-sei and the grey armor perhaps being spots where her bones are jutting out

the skeletal look also feels intentional given her backstory of once being human like she is a mangled and warped corpse given the form and stature of a Kaiju yet her mad scientist brain remains

it's honestly a extremely cool design (also you can tell it's very much inspired by Monster X But with very different context then that design)

Creech's design is so original and badass, Greg Capullo did a really good job at a design that only appeared in 6 Issues! (Yes, The Creech is 6 Issues long)

Movie What do you think of the Leviathans design from Atlantis: The Lost Empire?

Everything about this machine of war screams perfection! I freaking love this mechanical giant lobster that can shoot lasers through it's tentacles! The lobster design, the movement and armour makes this fit perfectly for a sea machine that's tasked to defend and sink ships. The last two cards make the design even more terrifying since this thing can also exist on land, and the red colour is pretty neat ngl. What do you think?

I honestly prefer these to the more modern ones.

They really are somewhat more creepy than recent models, they are more slender and have HUGE hands, they look more like demons than actual animals.

Video Game Meopatra (Yo-kai Watch 3)

One of the Treasure Yo-kai, a group of Yo-kai themed around civilisations of yore, whicj conicides with the franchise's experimenting with exploring dungeons around this time. She's effectively a mixture of Cleopatra amd the Sphinx, and 2 tails because of the nekomata Jibanyan is based on (the sphinx's lower half is a lion, and lions are cats in a way). The usage of a centaur body plan to merge the 2 is also a fairly clever idea.

Also contrary to her design having lots of gold and jewels, implying she's filthy rich, her powers are, ironically enough, inducing greed in those she inspirits and others will seemingly give them what they wants

She herself is also greedy too (her passive involves yoinking items and her ultimaye move is a super HP Drain whose yield she'd share with her allies), down to her Japanses name literally having "gimme, gimme" in it. Like, your highness, you're already super blinged out, is your greed some kind of bottomless pit? Do you really need more?

Video Game Pumpkaboo (Pokémon X and Y)

Should have saved this for halloween itself, but whatever.

Its a ghostly pumpkin mon, based on a jack o' lantern. I think its cool how the pumpkin body has 2 holes carved into it, and it can emmit light through them like a flashlight, as well as its multiple size gimmick (despite it and Gourgeist's physical appearances not changing much when this changes). I also adore its plump pudgy physique, as while its not completely spherical like Rowlet or Spheal, it comes close enough to matching their roundness.

Its cat-like face is also very cute, having 2 small yellow eyes and fangs that look fairly harmless (luckily no dex described them as vampires). The added brown puff on top of the pumpkin also helps keep it from being just a pumpkin with a face, and the idea of that part being based on black cats and/or bats helps further tie it to halloween.

Video Game The locust from the Gears Of War series.

Every single time they're on screen they're just badass. Their designs are amazing at making the player feel small in comparison. Their War beasts genuinely might be my favorite fictional fauna of all time.

Corpsers being these gigantic horrifying spider creatures and Brumaks being these gigantic dinosaur creatures with big ass guns strapped to them are borderline cartoonish but what makes these creatures so cool is how militarized they are. Every choice feels logical.

Corpser's are used to carve out massive tunnels in the ground to make it easier for the locust to crawl out and start attacking. Brumaks are basically living tanks deployed to destroy front lines with ease.

And even the "normal locust" are unique in their roles, designated snipers, Drones, Grenadiers and Boomers carrying grenade launchers make them so much more than just these mindless beasts that randomly showed up to destroy humanity.

Even characters like General Raam, Karn and Skorge are amazingly designed. One look at General Raam and you can tell he's a powerhouse, his introduction doesn't even have him holding a single ranged weapon.

And the further lore of them being forced to invade because of the lambent, their Queen being a modified human and the fact they literally were forced to evolve into Swarm is amazing.

In my opinion, they're probably one of the top five fictional armies in existence.

I just love when X-Men show off creative mutations like this! His skin & all parts of his body barring his bones & base organs have been replaced with a highly durable & flame resistant wax like substance that leaves them visible. Even when his face is just a skull & eyes he’s still very expressive!

I LOVE centaur characters, I find them rather unrepresented outside of "serious" fantasy (Yes, I know about Centaurworld).

A bit of a shame she's not in AFK Journey. But they did NOT have to go hard for a gacha game in the first place.

I don't even play this game, I just love her. She reminds me of Nutmeg Tiger from CRK.

Video Game The JRPG art of artist Torio on Pixiv

Thumbnail

The artist Torio (warning: slight NSFW and gore) originally drew most of their massive public ouvre for Javardry, a Java-based remake of the classical dungeon crawler series Wizardry. They have since occasionally updated their catalogue, and as far as I know much of their art is free to use. This has led to it being used in several indie games, including Dragon Ruins and its sequel.

I really like the mix of traditional art, dark fantasy aesthetics, and JRPG sprite composition. I especially enjoy the way the dark parts of each image blend into the black background, as if the creature in question was genuinely approaching throuch a dark tunnel.

I love how not only are they actually distinct species of primates (instead of just a bunch of generic monkeys and chimps), but their evil plans actually reflect the species they are!
