Also led to a very funny situation recently:

Unicode uses Heraldic Hatching as colors in their standards when working with Emoji.

Google didn't understand that, and interpreted those as literal.

And thus, šŸ’› became a hairy pink heart for Android 4.4.

on Android you can combine emojis and if you combine two yellow hearts it produces the hairy heart as an easter egg

8

u/tentacleyarn 5h ago

I use this feature to send unhinged combinations to my friends when they least expect it

5

u/Frederyk_Strife4217 5h ago

realistic wolf spider go!

u/inspektor_queso 4h ago

My wife and I love finding new combinations to send each other

That's hilarious!! Thanks for that laugh!

How?

8

u/Gardimus 12h ago

People should ironically make that their CoA.

4

u/ToastAndASideOfToast 9h ago

Lay down your money and you play your part,
Everybody's got a hairy heart

69

u/AwkwardWaltz3996 14h ago

Feels like there's more to it. Why wouldn't you take that as a pokedot heart? In no way does it either look like hair or make sense to have hair.

45

u/capsaicinintheeyes 13h ago

Apparently it received it as "stubble"...which it does look like, tbf, but it then utterly failed at giving the heart a 5 o'clock shadow

37

u/AwkwardWaltz3996 13h ago

It? You mean people. People saw that and thought, oh a heart with stubble. That's obviously what the emoji means.

7

u/capsaicinintheeyes 12h ago

(I'm unclear on exactly what was meant by "Google didn't understand this, and interpreted those as literal", but I assume it involves some failure of comprehension at some point in communications between man & machine, because...yeah, if that was hand-crafted pixel by pixel, I have to think any human developer would have called their superior over at some point and gone, "are we...sure about...🫓 ?")

24

u/AwkwardWaltz3996 12h ago

Well this was 2013, so I doubt they were using AI to do this. If this was 2026 I would totally believe that. But maybe that's a reminder that we are quick to blame AI for weird mistakes but actually it could just be people

5

u/capsaicinintheeyes 12h ago

Or *I* am, at least--thanks for the correction!āœŒļø

u/Shot_Policy_4110 11h ago

Aren't they polka dots

1

u/CitizenPremier 6h ago

Maybe they didn't know what heraldic meant?

44

u/BrokenEyeReborn 14h ago

Shit, and here I thought I was gonna learn there was a unicode block dedicated to actual heraldry

18

u/I-am-that-hero 11h ago

Guarantee that's how they found out about it, the story you reference was just circulating yesterday

22

u/ComfortableGreySloth 10h ago

I don't mind admitting that I learned about heraldic imagery from a hairy heart post.

3

u/Periodic-Inflation 7h ago

Did you also learn it from Depths of Wikipedia?

11

u/bob0the0mighty 13h ago

What should this heart look like? I see a yellow heart.Ā

12

u/Fancy_Elk565 12h ago

The yellow heart emojiĀ  āŸØšŸ’› ⟩ Ā is mistakenly displayed as a pink "hairy heart"Ā  ⟨ ⟩ Ā in Google'sĀ  Android 4.4 Ā mobile operating system (released 2013) because Google's emoji art team misinterpreted the dots in Unicode's black-and-white reference imagesĀ  ⟨ ⟩ Ā as beingĀ  hair stubble . In reality, the dotted pattern is simply used as a colorless way to represent the colorĀ  yellow Ā (in accordance withĀ  heraldic hatching ). The error was fixed inĀ  version 4.4.1 Ā a few months later.

Copy pasted from the wiki linkĀ

11

u/Sloogs 13h ago

I'm able to see it in the linked Wikipedia article

3

u/DasGanon 12h ago

That's the correct emoji for demonstration purposes. Everything is in the wikipedia article

u/physicsking 13h ago

Hairy heart, my new favorite. How do I conjure this magic?

u/2ByteTheDecker 14h ago edited 14h ago

2013 bro, hate to tell you but that's not recently.

Edit: yeah I get heraldic 1600s blah blah, you don't need to be fifteenth person making the same joke, just upvote one of the others and move on

147

u/Ash_Crow 14h ago

Per heraldic standards it's absolutely recent.

10

u/2ByteTheDecker 14h ago

And by Android standards it's about as old as heraldic imagery.

4

u/capsaicinintheeyes 13h ago

True...I was alive back when cordless phones and pocket calculators had yet to hybridize--to my mobile, getting typed on like this must feel like being manhandled by a clumsy iguanodon

48

u/troub 14h ago

To be fair, "recently" relative to the 1600s.

11

u/kikiacab 14h ago

Compared to the 17th century it certainly is recent.

1

u/CitizenPremier 6h ago

Makes a pointless comment, gets upset when people make pointless comments back

1

u/2ByteTheDecker 5h ago

It's Reddit it's all pointless, just make a new pointless comment

1

u/Shot_Policy_4110 11h ago

Lol it's not really a joke, you just burnt the food. And there's only 3 comments calling you out as of now

2

u/2ByteTheDecker 10h ago

Yeah I put the edit so I didn't get a ton of notifications for it. It's happened before and I dunno one of those Reddit idiosyncrasies that pisses me off.

5

u/capsaicinintheeyes 13h ago

Tricking is an alternative method which has the same purpose as hatching

Hello—what have we-* ...aw, it's just letter codes...

2

u/bramtyr 8h ago

Looks like someone read yesterday's Depths of Wikipedia post

1

u/shadowdance55 10h ago

Ohhh that banned Dilbert strip! 🤣

1

u/Fit_Relation8572 9h ago

Me when I have a heart of gold but everyone thinks I'm a furry

"That night he pictured the removal of his hairy heart and to the accompaniment of very romantic music as he watched it being shaved smooth by an anonymous stainless steel razor. The palpitating cherry-red organ was returned to its rightful place and began to beat faster as it led our hero, counting out time, through his first romantic encounter."

To some extent it was still in use when I was in school and your math teacher would bust out the 4Ɨ Photocopied worksheet from a book last published in 1985

139

u/rychan 13h ago

Yeah, that's what I thought this was describing at first, as well. Wikipedia has an article on "Ordered dithering": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordered_dithering

But heraldry hatching is different: Greens always become diagonal lines (with purples as the other diagonal orientation), golds always become dots, blacks always become crossed lines (usually axis aligned), etc. That's not what naturally emerges from grayscale conversion and dithering.

But the concepts are certainly related.

6

u/lastchance14 11h ago

I used that book new in 1985 šŸ˜‚

327

u/DisconnectedShark 14h ago

Hatching (sometimes called hachure, from the French word) is a conventional system for monochrome denotation of heraldic armory, whereby the tinctures (colours) are represented by dots and lines. This technique is employed in cases where colours, for either aesthetic, practical or economic reasons are not reproduced – e.g. on surfaces such as woodcuts or engravings, seals and coins.

76

u/TheLameSauce 13h ago

I particularly like how if you look at the timeline of standards of this practice changing, someone just decided "no, the way we've represented white for over a century is wrong! Now white is actually brown, and the dots that have been yellow this whole time - that's now white! And yellow gets to be this new thing I'm trying out, horizontal dashes!"

Like, come on Bonnani, was that necessary?

54

u/Narpity 13h ago

I’m a cartographer and we use this all the time to represent areas from one another

7

u/Ylsid 11h ago

Do you use the types of hatching to represent a specific colour too?

6

u/Narpity 11h ago

Not anymore, maybe at one point but they aren’t commonly known enough now. It’s more that they are just different from one another on the map

3

u/Yoghurt42 6h ago

Good thing youā€˜ll only ever need 4 different patterns.

1

u/blueavole 7h ago

Also graphs and charts used to use this when color printing was expensive .

I wish people would still use this because it’s easier to understand than five shades of blue.

I don’t care if it’s aesthetically pleasing Janet, i have no idea what your point is.

17

u/Kezzatehfezza 14h ago

An actual new TIL. Thank you, OP.

17

u/here_pretty_kitty 12h ago

Um…does this explain why these were the standard options for special ā€œshadingā€ going back to like Word 95?

52

u/outfoxingthefoxes 14h ago

That looks red

77

u/MegaFire03 14h ago

Yes that's the coloured version. In the hatched version they use lines instead of the colour red.

18

u/Kuul-aidTheRefresher 13h ago

I remember back in the early 90s my older sister was loaned a desktop computer by her college. It had Risk installed on it but it was only black and white so they used a variety of vertical, horizontal, and angular lines to denote each faction.Ā

86

u/outfoxingthefoxes 14h ago

They did a great work because it does look red

35

u/thissexypoptart 14h ago

Fun fact, there’s a whole article you can read if you click the link.

9

u/DrunksInSpace 14h ago

>That looks red

Right?! Crazy how our brains can decode the hat hing automatically.

13

u/ComfortableGreySloth 14h ago

I guess wiki should have made a better embed.

20

u/Ash_Crow 14h ago

It uses the first picture. I updated the article to change the order of the images but I doubt Reddit will refresh the preview.

9

u/Mind_on_Idle 14h ago

Yeah, but you helped everyone who showed up later. I just clicked for the first time and your edit is up, so should be good!

9

u/ComfortableGreySloth 14h ago

I think you dropped this šŸ‘‘

11

u/thissexypoptart 14h ago

It’s not your fault other people can’t be fucked to click a link lol

2

u/spinjump 9h ago

This hatching thing sure is effective!

9

u/SilyLavage 13h ago

r/heraldry is the place to go if this has tickled your pickle

8

u/Efficient-Bullfrog67 12h ago

I see that you also saw the post about the hairy ballsack heart

1

u/masheduppotato 4h ago

Uhhhh, I’m going to need to know more about this.

-3

u/Moonpaw 13h ago

These would be great in some blue prints…

Real talk this is extremely uninteresting and you see it all over old books and diagrams
