By popular demand, Animalia is once again organizing two free counter-advertising workshops focused on animal rights.
Time: Saturday, Oct. 24, 2:15–3:15 p.m. and 3:30–4:30 p.m.
Location: Terassi Pub Yläkerta (Pispalan valtatie 39, upstairs at the Vastavirta Club)
A relaxed, fun, and rewarding activity! Come develop your media literacy and learn to recognize what ads leave unsaid—and how they might embellish reality. After the counter-ad workshop, you, as a consumer, won’t be so easily fooled anymore!
Each workshop begins with a 15-minute introduction explaining what a counter-ad is and what we’ll be doing during the session. If you can’t make it on time, you’re welcome to join even if the workshop has already started. You don’t need any special crafting skills—it’s the message behind your work that matters most! We’ll use printed ads or ones cut out of magazines, sticky notes, glue, and other office and craft supplies.
What is a “counter-ad”? A counter-ad reveals something about the advertised product that the advertiser wouldn’t tell you themselves. The workshop encourages participants to reflect on how advertisements influence our lives and guide our actions.
The workshops were developed in collaboration with Voima magazine and Jari Tamminen from Häiriköt Headquarters. The workshops are part of the “Katse eläimeen” (Focus on Animals) project, a collaboration between Animalia, the Youth Academy, and Häiriköt Headquarters aimed at strengthening young people’s media literacy. We decided to expand the audience for the counter-advertising workshops to include adults as well, because advertisements deceive adult consumers just as much as they do young people.
If you’d like to participate in the workshops in English, please register by October 17 via email at [tampere@animalia.fi](mailto:tampere@animalia.fi). The presentations will be in Finnish, but you’ll receive English translations of the slides, which you can follow along with, as well as a few ads for the workshop.
Accessibility information: Terassi Pub Yläkerta is located above the Vastavirta Club. You can get there by moving up a hill with a slope of 13° at its steepest point. It is also possible to use the stairs. The staircase consists first of nine steps, each approximately 85 cm deep and 10–20 cm high, followed by eight steps, each approximately 40–50 cm deep and 10–15 cm high. There is no handrail at the bottom of the stairs.
The bar is accessed via the terrace. You can drive right up to the front of the terrace. There is a 5-cm-high threshold when entering the terrace.
In front of the outside door, there is a 3.5 cm high step grate and a threshold with a 13° slope. The doorway has a 2.5 cm high threshold. The exterior door is 88 cm wide, and beyond it is another doorway that is 80 cm wide and has no threshold.
The upstairs area has plenty of seating, several “booths” with backrest benches, as well as tall bar stools.
There are two restrooms upstairs along a 115 cm wide hallway. The restroom on the left has a urinal and a toilet stall.
If you need more space or privacy, the restroom on the right has a single toilet in a 145 cm x 167 cm stall.
The second restroom doorways are 70 cm wide, and the threshold is 4 cm high.
