Well in that scene he's in a metal stadium. Seems pretty simple to explain that.

u/Frank1gg 7h ago
I don't understand why people think that the mutant called MAGNETO has the power to control metal. Controlling metal is a side product of his ability. His real power is to control magnetism. The way he flies is by altering the magnetic field around his body in order to give him lift. In fact if I remember correctly the most powerful version of magneto could even alter the entire magnetic sphere covering the globe. So yeah I don't understand why people still think his power is just control over metal. I mean for God's sake the guy can literally absorb electricity to power his abilities and fuck with the electric signals being fired through our brains in order to either cause a seizure erase memories or even completely paralyze somebody. His powers extend far beyond just controlling metal.

u/hatsnsticks 5h ago
I find Magneto being limited to metal more interesting. It makes him dangerous because of the mastery of his power in spite of his limitations. Him being able to control the entire electromagnetic spectrum just makes him incompetent anytime he face trouble even with all that potential.

u/FundamentalSystem 6h ago
So does that mean he basically have telekinesis if he can manipulate magnetic field around objects to move them including non metal objects
3
u/Frank1gg 6h ago
Kind of. The thing is whatever he's manipulating has to have enough magnetism of its own for him to affect it. So yes he could theoretically lift a sheet of paper but it's going to take far more of his power then say lifting a coin. Honestly his powers are more or less powerful depending on the writers and what they need him to be and be doing at that point but yes technically he can manipulate anything it's just what it's made of determines how easily he's able to manipulate it.
4
u/RouteAverage3112 7h ago
The movies did him dirty in that sense.
At least they gave extra power to hus helmet.
1
u/Grade-Patient1463 5h ago
Exactly. He needed someone to get in his cell so he can gather up the iron in his blood to make a bullet.
33
u/razulebismarck 12h ago
I mean that’s a hilarious concept but they’ve actually levitated frogs using magnets.
So something something sciencey magnets how do they work but short version is powerful enough magnets make things made out of water float.
6
u/RoutineCloud5993 8h ago
One of the guys who did magnetic levitation work tested it on his hamster and then gave it co-author credit on the paper.
He later helped discover graphene

that actually makes more sense than what i was thinking, aka the iron in his blood.

I always assumed he just laced his outfit with metal.
I mean put metal in your boots and gloves and you essentially have the same flight powers as Iron Man. Probably more so considering you can move them in any direction.
3
u/No_Internal9345 7h ago
What happens to a frog in a strong magnetic field?
Same thing as any other diamagnetic material, they float.
6
u/HoryMage 12h ago
He is the Master of Magnatism, not the Master of Metal. He gives himself a magnetic field that interacts with Earth's.
5
u/Ashamed-Ad-3890 11h ago
The live action ones were always heavily nerfed. In the movies he's just a guy who controls metal, he's much more than that in the comics
2
u/Golden-Owl 12h ago
I thought he was MASTER OF MAGNET
1
10
u/Shrodax 12h ago
Magneto's powers are always presented ambiguously. Does he simply have telekinetic control over ferrous metals? Or does he have 100% mastery over electromagnetism, one of the 4 fundamental forces in physics?
The answer usually solely depends on what story the writer is trying to tell...
1
u/Livid_Chocolate_1072 11h ago
Sometimes he can throw lightning bolts or energy blasts of "magnetic power" Whatever the hell that means s
1
u/Talk-O-Boy 8h ago
He studied under Miles Morales
1
u/Queasy-Employment-82 7h ago
Idk i fw miles electric abilities, only issue is it is one of those issues where for some reason 60% of the time whena black comic book character has powers they are lighting based lmao, miles is black lightning with extra steps😭

u/Saigor15 8h ago
I know it’s just him creating a magnetic field around himself. But the thought of him secretly wearing a chainmail thong to float around is just too hilarious.
7
u/weslarprime 4h ago
I was gonna say he wears tap shoes, but metal thong is now canon.
1
u/DickwadVonClownstick 1h ago
Tap Shoes are a much better idea, the human body is designed to support its own weight using its feet, and it doesn't much appreciate it when you try to use any other part for more than a minute or two.
7
u/devilsfood72 12h ago
Magneto's capabilities are insane when you consider that magnetism & electricity fundamentally operate the same way! 🧲⚡️
He can basically generate & manipulate energy fields 😱
1
u/Fickle-Raspberry6403 11h ago
Isn't it like the 2nd most powerful of the fundamental forces of the universe
3
2
2
u/devilsfood72 9h ago
Yes it is! I believe there's 4: * Electromagnetism * Strong & weak nuclear force (binding & decaying matter) * Gravitation (gravity)
2
u/FlamboyantPirhanna 4h ago
That’s 3.
2
u/devilsfood72 4h ago
3 bulletpoints, 4 forces...
2
u/FlamboyantPirhanna 3h ago
Are strong and weak nuclear forces separate forces? You described them as a single force.

Reminds of the episode of Futurama when Professor Farnsworth explains that making an engine that can move the Planet Express ship faster than light is sci-fi fantasy, so instead he made an engine that moves the universe around the ship lol

I'm pretty sure this is the movie explanation (based on the prisons they put him in) but I'm less sure about the comics.
3
u/Remarkable_Break_569 4h ago
Same in the movies at maybe a grander scale. Comics he makes his body a repulsive sort of magnetism to earth core giving him propulsion. Its so precise in the control he can manipulate his speed and well as a given degree of repulsive force.
1
u/crinkledcu91 3h ago
Depending on the comic, they sometimes straight up give him powers over fucking gravity
While I'm not a scientist and am sure a gravity and magnetism are related in some way, it just gets kind of dumb (with his power level) in some stories lol
1
u/Remarkable_Break_569 3h ago
I mean i could go into it a real physics scale if youd want, but most of the comics dont really call for that, the best "Gravity" or well, only feat i know of is in new mutants where they pretty much state he has control over all fundamental forces. Where else does he control gravity?

Nope - the answer is actually: metal butt plug. The old mutant wallet never fails.

The iron in his own blood. Ian Mckellen's Magneto does the same thing in one of the other X-Men movies.
4
u/VexImmortalis 4h ago
Pretty sure that only worked cause Mysty injected the prison guard with a bunch of metal.
1
2
u/-hedonium- 1h ago
Wouldn’t that immediately separate the blood and cause him to die? Everything around the iron would still experience inertia and have to be pushed / pulled by the iron

He turns himself into a magnet and repels himself away from the Earth's magnetic field.

Tap shoes, but in the first trilogy she uses a metal in almost a liquid state.

Technically, a strong enough magnetic field can lift anything.
There is a video of a frog being exposed to some kind of ridiculously powerful magnetic field, and floating a bit:
1
1
u/COLaocha 11h ago
He could also just push the earth or a metal object attached to it away from himself
1
u/Martydeus 11h ago
I alway thought of it as a lever. Like when levitating there is a long rod from him to whatever he can move. This let him lift stuff up or lift himself up. And later on he leared how to make other things into leavers to help him move even bigger stuff.

1
u/Mindhunter7 10h ago
If he can attract metal he is exerting a magnetic field. Got skilled enough that he can let them be stationary and instead use that force to push himself off.
That's how it's in my mind.

1
u/Exciting-Insect8269 10h ago
He controls magnetic fields.
Everyone has a magnetic field, so technically he could make anyone fly, he just doesn’t.
1
u/Bass_pets_F 10h ago
He manuoulate electromagnetism. So he creates magnetic fields around him to levitate. In some storyline you see he can manipulate the earth magnetic field it self. He could stop earth from spinning.

u/Grr_0ughtaChoke 9h ago
His power is magnetism and control over electric-magnetic forces, goddamn it's not tht hard. He bends the magnetic field to give himself lift, anyone who's seen him outside of cinema knows this

u/AcademicOverAnalysis 9h ago
He probably is wearing a lot of metal on his body.
We also saw him using the iron in a guard’s blood in the second X-men movie.

1
u/XDoomedXoneX 9h ago
I think it was X2 they showed he needs to support himself with metal under his feet. He sucks the metal out of the guards body that Mystique injected into him previously then used them to make a platform to ride on while using the rest as projectiles to break out of his cell.
1
u/Constant-Plastic-350 8h ago
Yea. In this movie and the comics he can manipulate earths magnetic field to make himself fly. That's his actual power, control over MAGNETISM and magnetic fields. Not just metal manipulation. He's an omega level mutant

When extracted and refined into their pure, solid elemental forms, the body's iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and trace metals would display magnetic behaviors ranging from strong ferromagnetism to weak paramagnetism.
1
u/LifeTie800 8h ago
Fake. A G-string and a cock ring would be more accurate. Also an anal plug gives extra stability.
They're all made of wood tho, to make sure he can't pull them out.
1
u/LEGEND_GUADIAN 8h ago
He once lifted the titanic. He could easily levitate himself via his armor, or just stand on a metal disk and lift that 😆 🤣

He manipulates magnetism. Metal happens to be the most magnetic substance.
1
1
u/IveDunGoofedUp 7h ago
Nah, just a butt plug. He wouldn't even need a flared base because he can just pop it right back out with his powers.
1
u/Dragon_Rot79 7h ago
He doesnt manipulate metal. He manipulates magnetism. That force that repels or attracts. Metal is very magnetic. Wear Metal gear and repel off the ground

u/dirthurts 7h ago
In real science terms, every molecule can have an induced electromagnetic field. This is how an MRI works. So it stands to reason he can just induce his own body and lift it then.

u/newfriendfinder 7h ago
i imagine he uses metal in his clothes and… lifts them? maybe he has special metal plates seen into his clothes so he can fly

u/Madgod1911 7h ago
He manipulates magnetic fields, not technically metal objects. So look up how magnetic levitation works.

u/OratorioTangram 6h ago
This is explained without words within the first few moments of meeting Magneto in the first X-Men movie. He's wearing shoes that have metal soles. Not that it matters AT ALL when we're talking about a story where a man with an unbreakable metal-laced skeleton and rage issues travels to the past via psychic fuckery to re-write history...
1
u/Ecstatic-Seesaw-1007 6h ago
I mean, probably the steel shanks in his boots.
He doesn’t really fly like superman, he sort of stands in the air and floats around.
Now, you can float through dimagnatism. Scientists did this to a frog in 1997.
Water is magnetic, because or how H20
organizes.
Magneto isn’t really a master of magnesium. He might just fly.
He wouldn’t be able to stop bullets from magmatism. Copper jackets over lead are both non ferrous.

how do people not understand magnetic fields Magnus could destroy the entire planet if he wanted we are surrounded by a magnetic field that protects us from radiation

in the comics, his entire outfit was very thin chain mail, and his helm steel, of course. So he could not only lift himself with it, but dress and undress with a thought.

I think he controls electro magnetic fields or something?

Are you aware that the same magnetism that works with metal is what holds all atoms and quantum particles together too? His power is basically matter manipulation not simply metal.

Iirc he basically just creates his own magnetic field and has it repulse a bit from earths but i cant remember reading that so could also be making it up or basing it off of maglev trains lol
