Hi folks,

Today is starting off rough. Cleaning up a big ole puddle of dog wee before breakfast was not on my wishlist, and I got frustrated at my dog. Two doormats ruined this week.

This gave me a stinking headache and two hours later still haven't gotten rid of it. The pink cloud is definitely gone, and I know this period can be a bit grey as dopamine levels reset, I think?

But being back at day 1 will only bring more pain, and the relief is not worth the consequences. So IWNDWYT and hoping for better tomorrow!

I remember the warm feeling I used to get when I started, it was light and fun at first and than it started feeling like a cold chain around my neck

My family is full of alcoholics as well so I hope I can navigate this effectively without shining a huge light on it

Im sending you the biggest hugs. I have been where you are, until just recently, but add in two young children. I am at the end of my 30s. It is never too late.
For me, finally coming to terms with the fact I had a problem was what made it able to start changing. I hope you can be kind to yourself. Every human makes mistakes, and we cannot change the past. But we can change the present and the future. This internet stranger is rooting for you and believes in you and is proud of you for making this realization.

Everything is a few notches better. Food tastes better, breathing fresh air doesn't hurt, sleep is deep and refreshing, I look forward to the small things rather than seeing them as daunting tasks. And oddly enough, I don't hate going into work as much. Because I don't feel shitty figjting a hangover and I'm much lighter on my feet. Also..the no bloat due to inflammation is such a good feeling.

Are you allowed a guitar at the hospital? At least you can do more reading. Good luck.

This is what I am thinking. We weren’t there, and sometimes what a person picks up from another cannot really be described very well, and yet it’s still there. Honestly, it was apparently his real reaction so that is what I’d be going with, not some long analysis of how he felt about it. How he felt is how he felt and I don’t really understand all the judgment of this.

Some people get shit faced and blackout, some people are drunk and happy and friendly, and unfortunatelly you're the worst kind - agressive and self destructive. Alcohol is not good for anyone but for you it's another dimension. I know that because my brother is like that too and now he stays off alcohol for his good and for everybody around him

I was sick and tired of being sick and tired so I set a date to quit. I set up a plan to drink less each day so that by my quit day I would be down to 1 drink. I also focused on the mental aspects of drinking as it is easier to quit something I hate rather than enjoy. I made alcohol my enemy. I read/listened/watched everything I could find on alcohol addiction. My favorite was William Porter's book Alcohol Explained. The final piece of the puzzle was joining a community for support. I chose r/stopdrinking and I participated here everyday for my first 90 days. You can do this! We can support you!

Having said that - if they won’t do the tannoy page, do lean on the Aa numbers you have collected or even just this subreddit. I saw recently there is a live chat area, though I’ve not used it myself.

If it were me in Heathrow, I’d just keep moving around the terminal. And put it in my brain that alcohol just isn’t an option for me. Don’t sit and wallow in a pub.

Treat yourself to some overpriced snacks from the WH Smith that you wouldn’t normally buy. Or even a little London keychain to remind yourself of the time you conquered Heathrow. Browse for ages. You’ll smash it. Just don’t drink. IWNDWYT.

Good on your for making an effort to reflect and stop OP. I quit when I realised drinking no longer brought me joy. Thats a very large nutshell, but thats what it comes down to

I'm new here. Day one. What is my reason? Pancreatitis. It's not fun.

Let's both not drink today. All the best, friend.

Yeah it's kinda to be expected though. Football kind of sold it soul back in 1992 when the premier league was founded.

Glad I support my local team lol

I’ve never heard a tannoy in T5. I might just be misremembering but times may have moved on from the 80s 😂

The real way to know if one is an alcoholic or not is to stop. A checklist of stuff just helps us to understand if we are on the pathway or not. However the crunch test is to stop drinking. I couldn't stop and so there was some tough acceptance here for me to do. It is the first step and the most important one because it means I can't drink ever again. That sounds like a really bad thing but it isn't. This is one of the best things I did in my life because it changes it for the better.

The key to stopping is that you forget about tomorrow and any future with regards to alcohol. If you think of alcohol it has to be done in the now moment. I will not drink this hour. I will not take that first drink. I will not drink this afternoon. I will not drink this evening. You got to bed and have dodged alcohol. We don't fight alcohol. It is too powerful. It lies to us. It makes us think that things will be better if we drink it. They aren't.

24 hours is key to everything. We will not drink today. That's it. This is the mechanism that works. Live for each day, let tomorrow worry about itself. Live in the moment. Craving only last a little while and then they stop. The more days that go by the less you have them and the less intense they are and don't last as long.

Finally, when you do quit, please do see a doctor to help you. Alcohol is a bit of a different beast when it comes to quitting with quite a range of problems that can occur.

OP described the male host in the comments as ‘40 fat and annoying’. That seems pretty judgemental for someone he’s just met who doesn’t know he’s sober and is doing the culturally ‘normal’ thing of welcoming him and offering him a drink. Great job on leaving where he’s not comfortable but he doesn’t seem to have a lot of grace for others.
