Hi everyone,
I’m relatively new to Sweden and I think I misunderstood the parental leave and childcare rules.
My partner is going back to work now, and our original plan was for my mother to come to Sweden and help look after our baby. Unfortunately, her visa application was rejected, which has left us in a difficult situation at very short notice.
I also didn’t realize that daycare/förskola generally isn’t available until a child is around 1 year old. I had assumed we would have a childcare option earlier, so between that misunderstanding and my mother’s visa being rejected, we suddenly have no one who can stay home with our baby.
Because of this, I now need to take over and stay home with the baby. Ideally, I would need to start parental leave from tomorrow, but I only just realized that I may have been required to notify my employer much earlier.
Has anyone been in a similar situation?
Because this has come up very suddenly, I may need to start parental leave almost immediately. Can my employer refuse the parental leave because I haven’t given the normal notice period, or are there exceptions when something unexpected happens?
I’m not trying to cause problems for my employer. I genuinely misunderstood the process because I’m still relatively new to Sweden, and the visa rejection was completely unexpected.
I’m honestly not sure what my options are now, especially since my partner needs to return to work and we don’t currently have anyone who can look after our baby.
Would really appreciate advice from anyone familiar with Swedish parental leave rules or who has dealt with a similar situation.
