Question PSA: Steam Machine died yesterday

I haven't seen anyone with the same issue yet and I wonder if others have that too, so here's me documenting it. My 2 Tb Steam machine shut down suddenly while I was playing a game yesterday. Nothing was on screen, no warning beforehand.

I unplugged the power cable and plugged it back in. The moment I did, there was a loud pop and magic smoke came out of the unit, from the power supply area.

The device has been used normally, on a standard wall outlet, in a ventilated space. I live in Paris, power is super stable at my home, and I've never had that issue with any device I own. It looks like the PSU may have been a dud.

I just contacted Valve's support for an RMA, they haven't replied yet.

Anyone else in that situation?

Discussion 1080p looks virtually identical to 1440p at a distance of about 9 feet on a 65 inch TV

I have this living room set up. The performance boost you can get not worrying about 1440p or greater resolution is sooooo worth it. I know before I got my steam machine I was worried about how I was going to deal with having to potentially drop to 1080p (haven’t gamed on 1080p in years)

My main PC is a 4070 super build and I’ve been loving Control Resonant on it and was worried once I tried it on Steam Machine it would be vastly inferior - but steady 60fps medium settings and doesn’t dip during the insane combat moments.

Loving my first experience with the steam machine so far.

Discussion 3 months with the Steam Machine, PC Gaming needs more Split Screen Multiplayer gaming

The most jarring thing about PC Gaming that I’ve realized now that I play with the Steam Machine in the living room, is the lack of split screen multiplayer games.

i’ve been gaming mostly on the switch and switch 2 for the past 7-8 years, and now that I’m PC, i realize how many games lack local multiplayer, co-op, local splitscreen + online

i think and understand that it’s probably because traditionally most pc gamers are desk bound therefor not really suitable for local multiplayer, but now that PC gaming can be accessible from the living room, I hope developers realize how important of a feature this will become in the future. (And that future is now for me)

like first of all, crazy that there are no other games in existence other than mario kart that let’s you do splitscreen online multiplayer, as in, me and my girlfriend racing against others online.

i wanted to get Halo and play splitscreen campaign, only to find out that the new halo remasters don’t feature local co-op, only the console versions?? Even Gears of War doesn’t have it!!

I wanted to get the new star wars galactic racer game, that one too, A RACING GAME, doesn’t feature local muktiplayer!??

Even slay the spire 2! It features ONLINE multiplayer, but not local??? Which is crazy because its multiplayer is based off of the board game adaptation of slay the spire 1. So I really don’t understand why they couldn’t enable local multiplayer for STS2??

i just recently got into rally racing, all of the modern rally games lack local multiplayer as well!! (EA WRC 2024, AC Rally)

i’m browsing splitscreen games category available on Steam, and the selection is absolutely abysmal. I’ve already played the big ones like split fiction and portal and overcooked and etc

anyway, I’m just trying to drum up some noise and support for more local co-op, multiplayer, and splitscreen online multiplayer please!!

Discussion Can anyone explain a sudden 20-30fps performance boost? (Beta branch)

Updated my SM this morning (about 3 hours ago in the UK) and suddenly games are hitting much higher frames at 4K though I’m unsure if it’s just the FPS counter that’s bugged.

A few examples:

Valheim at 4k with everything on max (minus draw distance) was running at about 45-50 and it’s now 70-90.

Diablo 2R on 4K max settings was at about 45 and now around 80.

Belmont’s Curse at 4k hovered around 70-80 but now it’s 110ish.

I didn’t get time to test more demanding games but it was hard to tell whether it was the FPS counter being bugged because they all seemed to be playing at the FPS it showed rather than some weird frame gen thing.

Question Has anyone had MicroCenter install RAM into their steam machine?

Post image
76 Upvotes

It seems like micro center sells a ram installation service for $30 and the FAQ someone said they DO install inside the steam machine. For $30, feels like it would be much easier than for someone with no experience outside of replacing SSD to have them handle it. Has anyone else gotten RAM upgraded via micro center? https://www.microcenter.com/product/609480/ram-installation-service

News PSA: Turn on Big Art mode

The recent SteamOS update includes the fantastic BIG ART mode. You may need to manually turn this on in settings menu > home > big art > toggle on.

Just a PSA because it was not automatically turned on for me after the update. This feature makes your Library home screen look much cleaner and nicer, without the cluttered news & updates from random games

Question what's the state of wake on lan now?

• Upvotes

droiddeck got me interested in using steam on the go again but i won't always have access to a peltier cooling fan to keep my phone from melting. wanted to get wake on lan working from a fully powered down state (currently the only way i can remotely power on the system is pinging the internal receiver via the steam controller) but when searching i just find some threads from a month or more ago saying it's not really working / solutions are in the works.

steam controller via bluetooth works great, steam input works flawlessly on droiddeck and steam link. connecting the puck also works of course.

are any solutions out or is this sort of a dead idea? the sm in my house is always connected to power via surge protector with an ethernet cable. should probably buy an ethernet surge protector as well at some point (someone here a couple months ago posted their steam machine got cooked by lightning via the ethernet port).

Question Game updates take forever

First of all, extremely Happy with the machine, but….

i have Diablo 4 on my Steam Machine, but feels like the game needs to update literally all the time. On top of that, the updates are super slow to download even though I got a 1000/1000 Mbps connection, and it’s usually huge updates with many gigabytes. Right now 114 gb

Also another annoying thing, whenever Diablo 4 is updating in the background I can’t play any multiplayer games. Tried playing Helldivers 2 while it was downloading and I just keep losing connection and getting super unstable connection/disconnects.
Is this normal or am I missing some setting here? Anyone else having this issue or know a fix?

Im running the machine on cabled ethernet

Question Does anyone else find that Rhodes in RDR2 tanks the performance?

• Upvotes

So I’ve been playing through RDR2 on my SM, running most settings at high at 1440p, looks great and runs between 60 and 80 fps. Perfect.

However, the town of Rhodes just kills the performance. it stutters like crazy when galloping through the town. I’ve also found that, at night, standing outside the saloon and looking at the building, panning the camera, absolutely destroys performance. I haven’t gotten to St Denis yet so I’m worried that will be really tough!

Anyone else experiencing this?

Question Headless remote play?

Is it possible to launch a game through remote play without having a display turned on or connected to the steam machine?

I haven't tested it yet as i've had a busy day but the thought occurred to me, as the steam machine emulates a display internally before sending a video signal out to hdmi, does it not?

Discussion Steam Machine is really good (Bazzite, Nobara)

I bought a Steam Machine on a whim a couple of weeks ago and am really impressed. It works remarkably well as an integrated product.

What surprises me is how much better it is than Bazzite and Nobara, two Linux distributions designed to provide a SteamOS-like experience on PCs. Those systems are great, I'm using Nobara as my desktop now. And a lot of the gaming experience is the same, it's all based on Proton and the same drivers.

But the Steam Machine experience is just a lot more reliable. On the other systems I've had a lot of trouble with changing display resolutions, also HDR. The Steam Machine is just totally solid, giving me 2160p at 120Hz in HDR without drama. I guess that's Gamescope everywhere? I've also had a lot of trouble with shader cache management on the desktop system: Steam Machine seems to be smooth.

I'm sure some of my experience is hardware related. My main Bazzite and Nobara machine are both NVidia GPUs and their drivers are still awkward in Linux. Valve had the chance to dial in a single reliable hardware experience and it works.

Anyway, Steam Machine is a nice product. It works great for ordinary gamers who don't care much about operating systems. But it impresses me too, someone with 30+ years of Linux desktop experience.

Question NTE & Non-Steam Games not starting after Steam Client Update (October 13th)

as the title says, after the new steam client update most of my custom non-steam games such as PC Ports and Decompilations don't launch anymore, and NTE too.

The Ports and Decomps are located as appimages in my download folder, and the launch targets did not change.

NTE only runs on Dw-proton-latest and I updated it, too, through Proton Plus in Desktop Mode.

I think these are two different issues, NTE worked with the client update, but not anymore after updating dw-proton-latest...

the appimages don't work anymore in big picture mode and in desktop mode, but are of course launching out of steam directly by starting the appimage.

I tried changing from steam stable to steam beta and back, I also checked the compatibility tools under properties. but nothing works anymore. :(

does anybody have the same or similar issues or a workaround?

Question How do you all capture clips on the Steam Machine?

I know Steam's "game recording" is the easiest way, but when I enable it, it eats up at least 30% of my performance, which makes it not worth having on.

Do you use another method for capturing clips? please let me know.

Hello everyone! I hope you are enjoying your Machine! If you're anything like me, prior to getting one (whether waiting for your order or on the fence about getting one) or before buying a game, you want to see how a game runs on the machine!

Well my playlist now has over 70 games!!!

It gets updated with a new game daily! (With the small exception here and there)

Have a game you want to see running that I haven't covered?

Leave a comment and I'll make it happen for you!!

Happy gaming guys 🤓 🎮

Question Accensione SM con Controller SC

Ciao a tutti.

Devo ricollegare il controller all'adattatore interno?

Question Anyone use a doc on the SM yet?

Steam Machine Doc?

So I have a bit of a stupid problem to have. I have a bunch of old drives in different form factors that Id like to use with my steam machine since its my main pc but unfortuantly due to the 5 port IO using multiple USB based drives is a bit hard. So the only solution I could think of is a powered Type C Doc that I could slot everything into then slot that into the steam machines Type C.

2 Issues I see but Im new to linux, steam os and pc so I may be over thinking it.

First Issue is the doc is thunderbolt and the steam machine is not.

Im aware the display ports wont work unfortunately.

Second is this is a powered doc in the sense its ment for laptops and handhelds to also charge them, so would it try and feed actual wattage into the steam machines Type C?

Id like to assume the doc and steam machine have a handshake and negotiate those problems.

Has anyone used a powered doc with there steam machine to expand there IO?

Question Desktop launching negative

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This started happening yesterday. Booting into desktop, the screen looks negative for about 18 seconds and then goes normal. Anyone else seen something like this?
