MOD announcement Introducing Trusted Identifier flairs!

Trusted Identifiers will now be granted a flair of "👑Trusted Identifier👑", or "👑{custom user flair}👑".

These will be people who repeatedly demonstrate expert Identification abilities, these flairs will add extra trust and credence behind their ID.

So on posts with multiple different IDs, look out for the Trusted Identifiers as their ID will likely be the correct one, even if it goes against the masses.

(For those with custom user flairs which have been replaced by the Trusted Identifier flair, you can switch back to a custom flair and add the crown emojis yourself if you still wish to maintain your custom flair. Im working on automating this so that custom flairs stay intact and it adds the emojis without replacing the whole flair, but for now just edit it yourself if the whole flair is replaced)

Taking this opportunity I'd like to also introduce 2 new moderators:

Any idea what might have happened? I found him crawling on my wall. Almost scared me to death cause I didn't realise it was a spider with missing legs.

Can anybody identify this one please? He said it was roughly 10cm across.

Google lens says flat rock spider, but I don't think they are native here ?

It's kind of cute how small she made herself here. No, she's not a pet, she just moved in and decided to stay here.

She's much lighter than when my old cat used to sleep on my lap while I worked, at least!

Spider Appreciation 🕸️🕷️ Just wanted to post this Joro pic my wife took... All to see a male creeping up on the female while she's (the spider) sucking the juices out of her prey. She chased him off a couple of times. Looks like he finally had some success. It was delightful to watch!

She couldn't have picked a better spot! Does that kind of make it a real spider web? Sorry it's not the clearest photo.

I was enjoying some last rays of sunshine on my balcony in South Germany. There are like 17 ladybugs on the wall here and I noticed one of them limping. When I tried to get off the thing that made it limp, I noticed that a spider was trying to hunt it. If anyone can tell me what spider that is I’d appreciate it but mostly I just wanted to share this neat video.

This is the third one I’ve seen in a week! I think it’s a non-venomous wolf spider? I have a toddler who really likes spiders so I want to get a second opinion. Western North Carolina, USA.

Just sharing 🕷️ The elusive “Folding Door” Spider and her heartbeat

Antrodiaetus pacificus found in Washington State. This one is an adult female. While photographing and filming her I noticed her heartbeat! Ever since I learned how these spiders disguise their burrows I see them literally everywhere. They have to be one of the more common outdoor spiders in my region but because they’re exclusively subterranean, they seem rare. The exception is the males sometimes appear this time of year as part of their mating season at night and the early morning. They’re exceptionally cold hardy; I’ve seen the males marching around in the high 30s and 40s without much issue which is pretty exceptional for Mygalomorphs, at least, in my experience. And for those who see its bulk and are wondering, yes they are related to tarantulas as they belong to the same infraorder (mygalomorphae). Their fangs fold down just like tarantulas and posses only two spinnerets. They get their name from their unique trapdoors which fold with two “doors” instead of one and they pile up clay rich soil and debris on top which is how I’ve been finding their burrows by the dozens.

i think it’s a male (?) bc of his lil boxing gloves (pedipalps!) although they’re not super apparent in these pics.

also sorry they’re not better, i don’t have the macro lens on my phone 😔
