Announcements Please use NSFW tag for images of graphic injuries

There have been a lot of posts lately sharing very graphic images of snails with extreme, severe injuries. It is perfectly fine to share this type of content if you need help with an injured snail, but please use the NSFW tag for these images.

This has been an unofficial rule of this sub for a while, but it seems to have been forgotten lately. So, I'm making an official mod team announcement: this is our official policy. Graphic, upsetting images must be tagged.

People come to this sub because they love snails. They don't come here expecting to see images of destroyed shells, shell-less snails, and dead snails. It can be very upsetting and distressing for users here to see this type of content unexpectedly. People may also be browsing this sub in public and want to avoid gory images.

Images of mating don't require the NSFW tag. But please use this tag for pictures of injuries including, but not limited to: mantle collapse, shell fell off, crushed shell, organ exposure, stepped-on snail.

Thanks to everyone who has been tagging their posts so far. Again, it's still totally okay to post this content if you need help, but please tag it appropriately so everyone can have a good experience here.

Announcements Introducing Seller Verification

Hello r/snails!

As many of our users are aware, it can be difficult to find reliable, legal, and ethical sellers of captive bred snails.

To better facilitate buying, selling, & adoptions on this sub, we are introducing a seller verification program. Verified Sellers will be users or external sources that have been vetted by mods. Verified Sellers will be allowed to advertise their sales on the sub, and a Verified Sellers tag will applied to their posts to indicate they are a trusted source. Individual users on this sub as well as sellers on external websites are both able to be verified. A list of Verified Sellers organized by location will be added to the bottom of this post, which sellers can chose to opt in to if they wish.

Are you a seller or breeder interested in becoming verified? Send a DM to u/doctorhermitcrab to get started. Breeders who prefer to give snails away rather than sell are also welcome to apply.

Happy snailing!

Can a snail be so fat it can’t retract?

Found a new friend. I’ve been trying to identify it. But can’t get it to retract so I can see whether there are any denticles.

Then I started to wonder. Maybe it can’t fit back in its shell? Maybe it’s too chunky. Or maybe just stubborn.

Either way I’d love help identifying this guy. Thinking mesodon or neohelix. Found in NC.

I realised I have never shown photos of my third Helix pomatia, Blandina, on here. Which is unfair but also short-sighted, since Blandina makes the best faces.

🐌 I made a stylish tote bag featuring a snail!

I wanted to combine a snail with elegant botanical patterns, giving it a little vintage, Art Nouveau-inspired feel.
The design is printed in white on natural cotton, and I really like how subtle it looks against the fabric.
I run a small creative project in Japan called Kotsumu Sha, where I explore the world of snails through art and design.
What do you think? Would you carry a snail tote bag like this? 😊

Lissachatina fulica babies I am raising.

The eggs in the first photo are not the exact eggs these snails hatched from. I’ve included it to show what they would have looked like, as they are from the same species.

I’ve had my snail (only one) since March and he has not been in contact with another snail since then.
However I found a single white round egg next to the door of his tank.

I think my snail is the Virgin Mary..?

Help My snail hasn’t come out of its shell in two weeks, is there anything I can do?

Post image

So I’ve been keeping two albino giant african snails for one year, bought from the pet shop, and two weeks ago one of them retracted into its shell and hasn’t come out since. I tried putting food right in front of it, I frequently mist the tank with water, and I even tried giving it baths but it won’t come out. It responds lightly when I spray water on it but it stops moving again soon after. The other snail is healthy, it eats and explores the tank often, so I have no idea why this one ended up like this.. I really don’t want to lose it, since it’s been a precious companion of mine since last year

Help Logs for snail tank

• Upvotes

I purchased a log from the reptile section at the pet store for a hideout/climbing feature for our garden snail ( cornu aspersum) we believe. When researching, it said to rinse the log for 3 minutes with warm water to remove any debris from the store. It didnt say anything about air drying. After I added it to the tank covering it with moss, some hours later, it dawned on me that I may have poisoned our snail by rinsing with tap water. Nothing said to rinse it differently. I removed it after realizing and splashed some spring water over it, let it dry over night and put it back. I'm assuming this wasn't enough to remove chlorine and what not. As now im reading it should dry for 48 hours. There's really no easy way to rinse something larger without using the tap in my sink or maybe dunking it in a bucket of spring water.. is my only other option. Is it going to harm him since it absorbed the tap water or is it not really something to worry about?

Side note: our garden snail has been acting strange for weeks. He finally woke up last night after putting him in his new tank with a new setup compared to the small thing he was in prior. He was stretched out for like 15-20min, not moving around much other than reaching for the stars, before falling over covered in substrate and retreated back into his shell and hasnt moved since (24 hours) now I'm worried he's not doing well. The Little guy also hasn't eaten a single thing in weeks. He was stuck on the glass for weeks and eventually fell or crawled down onto some lettuce and retreated and got stuck to lettuce for a week. I didnt want to remove the lettuce but it was rotting because he was stuck to it for so long. I gently peeled the lettuce away and saw a clear seal between the lettuce and his shell. He woke up hours after that and thats when what i described in the above paragraph happened. I know you're not supposed to do things like that but we had to move him to a new enclosure because the last one just didnt seem to be working for him. What is the problem? Should I toss the log as well??
