Where have all the bright colors gone on ski gear?

Can any one explain why ski fashion has been so focused on muted and earth tone colors for the last several years?

Personally, because I have kids, like to be noticable on the mountain. I have a pair of bright red Mountain Hardware ski pants from circa 2013 that I love. Still holding up great but after a couple trips the last few years catching polar vortices and having to go out in -15 degree temps, I have been on the lookout for a new pair of bibs for some extra warmth. And despite looking at every ski gear brand I can find or the Algo sends me and every major aggregator of ski gear I know of, it's basically impossible to find bright colors in a men's bib. The yellows are all mustard, the reds are all clay, and the greens are all forest.

Doesn't make any sense to me given how all the elementary age boys are running around in the most insane blends of blue, yellow and pink from Baseball Lifestyle 101 or Goat USA, and with skiings history of loud mountain fashion.

Figure it's cyclical, and it'll come back but wondering why it ever left in the first place.

Lighter Skis, a Targeted Rule, and the Athlete Caught in the Middle ~ Breezy

Thought it was an interesting read.

TLDR: FIS rewrote weight rules in a way that singled out Breezy, whether coincidentally or as a way to target her.

New tech company is making big claims about being able to "save winter" and "ensure the ski industry can continue to exist." But color me skeptical...

This is the same company that created 19 million gallons of rain over Homer, AK, in just 3 hours with two drones. Now, it wants to partner with every ski resort in Utah and is even eyeing the 2034 SLC Winter Games.

If drones can help solve the water crisis in the West, I'm ALL IN. But cloud seeding has been around forever, and I have to believe there's a reason why most resorts aren't investing heavily in it.

But I could be wrong. Curious what other people think.

Ski instructor job in Whistler, but no guaranteed housing. Would you risk it over Sun Peaks?

Thumbnail
5 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I have ski instructor offers from both resorts for this winter (lvl2).

Sun Peaks is the safer option since I’d have staff housing secured, whereas in Whistler I’d still have to apply for staff housing and would be on the waitlist.

My heart is leaning towards Whistler, but I know I could also have an amazing season at Sun Peaks. I’m just really worried about the housing situation in Whistler and the possibility of not finding a place to live. I am travelling from Italy, so I will arrive there at the beginning of November, which is already kind of late as well.

What would you do? Is Whistler worth the risk?

October long-range data is in, and I combined six seasonal weather models into one snowfall forecast for winter 2026/2027. Data reveals a clear Super El Niño pattern: more snow for the Southern and Central U.S., but less snow in the North, southern Canada, and most of Europe

I make seasonal snowfall maps from the long-range models each month, and with the data from October predictions now available, it shows that all six main models now agree on a strong Super El Niño snow pattern this winter.

In the United States, more snow is expected from California and the Southwest into the Southern Plains and the South, while the Pacific Northwest, the Northern Rockies, the Great Lakes, and New England show a below-normal snow signal. But when plotting the change from September to October data, the Northeast showed the biggest improvement in total snowfall forecast. Timing-wise, December looks slow, with most of the snow coming in January and February.

A below-normal snowfall season is also predicted by all six models across southern Canada and most of Europe.

In the article, I present the full set of maps, including the visual change from the previous month's snow forecast, the snow spatial distribution, the forecast for ski areas, and a Snowfall Explorer where you can check the snow forecast for your own state, province, or country.

1970s Rossignol Italy Ski Team issued down hat. Has anyone seen one of these before?

Thumbnail gallery

I recently came across this piece and have been digging into its history. It's a team-issued down puffer hat from what appears to be the golden era of Italian ski tailoring. Inside, it features the patent tailoring tags from Nicola Aristide, custom silk-screening with the Florentine lily emblem, and heavy-duty snap earflaps designed for extreme alpine conditions. I’ve done extensive research into the history behind the hat and based on the tags and how they correlate, what the tags say, the design and small structural details, and all other details I can confidently confirm it’s a 1970s Italian national ski team issued hat. One of the tags says Pool Sci Italia. Pool Sci Italia is the official consortium of technical suppliers founded to equip the Italian National Alpine Ski Team (FISI). Only brands under direct contract to supply gear to the national team are authorized to sew the Pool Sci Italia label into their garments.

I've spent hours searching archives and haven't been able to cross-reference another team-issued example from that era (or really at all) in this condition or similar to mine. For any vintage sportswear or textile historians here—how common was this level of bespoke national team contracting back in the 70s, and what would you value a piece like this at if positioned as a 50+ year old Italian ski collectible?

Could this potentially be a museum piece due to the era and the pristine condition mixed with the rarity? For example maybe places like The Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame (Vail, Colorado) or The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and Museum (Ishpeming, Michigan) would put something of this caliber in some type of display, on a manakin, etc?

Found an old photo of my great grandpa (left) and his buddy touring in Mt. Rainier National Park. Not sure on the exact date, but judging by his age, likely shortly before or after World War II

NOAA just released another winter outlook today.

Not much change from the previous outlooks. Warmer in the US northern tier and western Canada. Wetter with mostly average temps in the southern tier.

I've never posted or commented anything about a Bowflex. Why do the mods think I'm a bot? I've been in this community for a long time. I regularly contribute photos, personal ski video, comments, memes, etc.. What gives?

Mountain Confessional: I’m a Jerry

I’ve been on this sub for years. My only experience with skiing has been a couple of handfuls of ski vacations throughout my 31 years on this Earth. I’ve always laughed at the idea of a Jerry. Jerries are so stupid. The bumbling idiots of the mountain that we all get to laugh at for no other reason than how stupid they are. Oh watch this video. Here’s a Jerry completely Yard Saling. Oh here’s a Jerry skiing too fast for his skill level and nearly causing a wreck. We all point and laugh, “Wow what a Jerry!! HAHAHAHAHA!!”

A few days ago, someone posted a video of 3 Jerries that all were trying a little line where there were a few bumps and tight turns. They all wipe out and laugh at each other. Like the Colorado cold on a January morning, it hit me. Everything clicked. My heart dropped.

All these videos I have seen over the years. All the posts lambasting Jerries for their recklessness, lack of skill, lack of courtesy on the mountain, I have been those things.

I have been flying down a groomer and had a yard sale because I hit one measley bump. I once bumped shoulders with someone on the mountain (my fault), didn’t stop and just yelled “SORRY!” as I skied away because we were “both fine” in my mind. I have side skidded down a Black taking all the snow away because I was on a run way above my skill level. I have gone through the terrain park at a snails pace only to wipe out because I got 3 inches off the ground.

I don’t know where to go from here. Is there a Jerries Anonymous group I can join? What’s the 12 step plan to recovery? Please help.

Sincerely,

Recovering Jerry

Current Armada Outerwear Sizing

Anyone comment on Armada sizing, seems like they are trying to move into a Standard vs Team sizing designation but can't find any model height, weight and size pictured info on any of the photos. For folks who are 6'1 ish what size outerwear pants and jacket are keen on these days?

Photo: The only image based sizing guide I could find on their site right now.

Ski Big3 Jan 2027

Live on the east coast, conditions expected to be bad this year. I live in Canada so I’m considering skiing SkiBig3 in early January 1-8. Considering the super El Niño we’re getting this. Will conditions be rideable? Additionally does anyone have anything tips or personal experience from skibig3?

Got bored last night and ordered another pair of custom ON3P boards.

I probably should block them from my CC at this point.

Woodsman 92’s, ripper, torsion bar metal. Hoping to approximate the Volkl Vertigo G3’s I loved 25 years ago. Also got the PDX carpet pattern bases, which make me happy.

$150 off custom orders right now, BTW. That’s about 12% off.

(I don’t work for them, I just pimp them online to validate my own purchases and make myself feel smart)
