On my 8th playthrough of Silent Hill 2, a massive detail clicked for me regarding the graves in the Labyrinth. I think Angela and Eddie are not alive during the events of the game. I believe they are already dead spirits trapped in the town's metaphysical web—functioning exactly like Walter Sullivan.
Here is the breakdown of why this theory holds serious weight:
- The Evidence of the Labyrinth Graves. In the Labyrinth, we find a row of graves.
• Walter Sullivan’s grave is full.
We know from Silent Hill 4: The Room that Walter is physically dead by suicide at this point, but his spirit continues to manifest because of the 21 Sacraments.Angela and Eddie’s graves are also completely filled and sealed.James’s grave is the only one left wide open.If Walter's full grave represents a dead spirit currently manifesting in the town, it stands to reason that Angela and Eddie being in the exact same state means their physical lives are already over too. James's grave is open because his fate is the only one left undecided.
- They Knew the Rules Before Entering
Think about how Angela and Eddie act from the very second James meets them:
• Angela warns James that "something is wrong with this town" before she even gets deep into it. How could she know that unless she had already crossed over and experienced its supernatural transition?Eddie tells James, "This town called you here too." How does Eddie understand the metaphysical "call" of Silent Hill unless he is already a part of its spiritual ecosystem?
- The Purgatory Mirror
If they are spirits, their surroundings reflect their eternal purgatory:
• Eddie is constantly surrounded by rotting, stagnant meat and random corpses that he claims were "already dead" when he got there.Angela tells James, "For me, it's always like this," while walking up a staircase of literal, unending fire. They aren't just visiting; they are permanently trapped in snapshots of their final, traumatic moments.
- Acting as the Town's Subconscious Catalyst
Because their earthly journeys are finished, the town uses their lingering souls as direct psychological mirrors to break down James’s denial:
• Eddie represents James's pent-up aggression and what happens when you completely lose your morality.Angela mirrors James's crushing, self-destructive guilt. She even makes comments about his "poor little Mary" before James ever mentions his wife's name to her.By treating Angela and Eddie as ghosts tethered to the town's spiritual grid—exactly like Walter Sullivan—the entire narrative of Silent Hill 2 becomes even darker. James isn't just wandering an empty town with other tourists; he is navigating a graveyard of souls that the town is weaponizing against his own psyche.
This is just my take on it and a different way to look at it
