Question Residence permit renewal

Hey everyone,

Heard recently multiple people getting calls from Immigration after submitting for residence permit renewal.

One of my friend mentioned after the submission, immigration officer called and asked for extra company documents. He provided and the officer reviewed it and said OK and will only contact if needed.

Anyone else recently got similar calls for additional documents? Is scrutiny stricter now? How long did your approval take after?

Question English speaking massage therapist

Any recs for an English speaking massage therapist? I know many places have English menus, but I have a few injuries and would feel most comfortable being able to communicate clearly during the massage if something doesn’t feel right if possible. Professional non-sexual massage only.

Meet Solo traveler looking for foodies to share meals with 🍜🍻

Alo! 👋

I’ll be solo traveling around China and spending Nov 2–9 in Shanghai. I love Chinese food, but there’s one tiny problem: some restaurants serve enough food to feed a small village, and unfortunately, I only have one stomach. 😂

I can only eat so much soup dumplings, Peking duck, and hairy crab before I need to be rolled back to my hotel. So I’m looking for fellow foodies who are down to split dishes, explore local eats, and help me maximize my food-to-stomach capacity. 🤝

No pressure to be a hardcore foodie, either! If you’re up for grabbing a bite, having a few drinks, exploring the city, or just hanging out, hit me up!

A little about me: early 30s, Asian M, from the West (not Canada 🇨🇦😂). I’ve been to China before, so I’m not completely clueless, just perpetually hungry.

Question Studying at ZJU/SJTU

Hey people, I'm looking into applying to a control science and engineering masters at ZJU/SJTU (english taught). I have not yet messaged a supervisor but I know who I want to contact, I just need to refine some of my github projects (I hope it's not too late to contact supervisors?). I very much so admire the advancements in technology that ZJU/SJTU achieves, but some of the online reviews worry me. People say that the learning experience for an international student in China is not so good as professors don't teach that well, is there any truth in this nowadays? Does the university offer good english taught classes and environments? I understand it's China and things are supposed to be in Chinese, but is the experience actually world class? Thank you very much so for helping me!

Meet Looking to Make Some Friends! In Shanghai for the Weekend

Hi everyone!

24M from the UK, visiting my parents in China. I work in London, and love travelling, going to the gym, Muay thai and spending time with my friends! My 普通话 gets me by, but I wish I were as fluent as I am in English.

Have decided to make a last minute solo detour to Shanghai on my China trip after hearing so much about the fashion, food and nightlife. I’ll be getting the high speed rail to Shanghai on Fri 16th, and will be there until Sun 18th.

Keen to meet with travellers and locals alike! If anyone is keen on going out for food, drinks or a night out I’d love to meet up. Also would appreciate any fashion (into streetwear, workwear and a clean European aesthetic), food or bars/club/rave/event recommendations.

Thanks in advance for your help! 先谢啦!

Want to bike around Shanghai with a road bike, doesn't need to be overly fancy. Can anyone recommend shops or resources to do so? A cursory search online didn't result in any leads

Discussion Why are Shanghainese people so cold?

Last year, I worked in shanghai and whenever I tried to start a conversation with anyone they stare at me and immediately turn the conversation away, even thought we work in the same office. The only people whom they talk to seemed to be their family members. I also never seen anyone talk about anything personal in the office or chat about anything. Is it like this in the rest of China too, like people are so cold? I am also Chinese so I don’t understand why everyone is so cold to me

Question Any more Harry Potter themed cafes/events in Shanghai? Also looking for HP friends!

Hello! I'm currently in Shanghai for school and was wondering if there are any Harry Potter themed cafes, events or other HP related places worth checking out!

I've done some research on XHS and already know about GOTIA, Owl Call and Apolli, but I was wondering if there are any other recommendations that I might have missed. I'd love to explore more HP themed places while I'm here!

I'm also hoping to find some people who'd be interested in going HP hopping with me, exploring cafes and events together and just yapping about Harry Potter hehe.

Preferably fellow Marauders, Jegulus and Drarry fans, but any HP fans are welcome!

Feel free to comment or DM me if you're interested!

Discussion Looking for work in Shanghai at 24/female

I just wanted to share my experience.

I have been using the Chinese apps and WeChat and I also went to the foreigners work fair. But it is extremely tiring and not so promising I think. I feel like even though I speak Chinese on a native level (I’m half Chinese), and I have a bachelors from a technical university (from Germany), it is hard to find a job.

I have gotten deep enough into the apps that I found the jobs for the 美团 drivers lol and Starbucks intern positions. I have written three applications today + one email application + texted two WeChat accounts. A few days ago I wrote another 4-5 applications. Spanning from finance to music/entertainment to luxury and even entry-level management/consulting positions.

There are at least twenty more positions I want to apply to (and I will), but it feels like these job postings are all fake lol I feel like there’s something I am doing deeply wrong. I make a new CV for each application. I don’t use LinkedIn bc the variety of CVs that I have/jobs I apply to is so wide. I could use some contacts or meet some people but I’m a bit embarrassed to do that. No I have no work permit but I know that a Chinese company would/will take care of it if they want to.

Alright it’s a bit of a rant and seeking out if someone has had positive experience?

Event Halloween is on a Saturday this year!

I want dress up, party with my girl friends and have an amazing night. What are your suggestions on where to go? I’m seeing a lot of different flyers but I don’t want to go to a random and potentially dud event. What are all the people who know what to do, doing? Looking for something cool and exciting

Discussion Bonsai Supplies in Shanghai?

Wondering if there are any bonsai specific or possibly gardening shops that sell bonsai supplies. I'm looking for a few nice pots for some of my trees and would rather spend a little more seeing the size in person than rolling the dice and having something from taobao delivered.

Question Kindergarten recommandation

Hello we might go to Shanghai as an expat family and my kid will turn 3 in the meantime.

Work won’t be covering schooling fees. Any recommandation for a kindergarten with reasonable fees while being actually good at what they are meant too?

I was considering Lycee Français since we are French but the tuition fees are really out of place (115000Rmb / year).

We are also considering public local school (my husband is from Chinese decent / but cantonese) but we‘ve been told it’s complicated to secure a place there.

Any recommendation both on private and public schools would be welcome.

Thank you

They want us to pay via WeChat Pay instead of Booking.com and I had a lot of conceirns. Now they said that we can also pay when we moved in already.

Can you help me if this is a scam? Because I dont have a good feeling about it.

Furthermore could you also let me know if booking a hotel is more convenient for foreigners?

Question Where can I buy tiny, portable chair?

Hey all, traveling to China in a few week. I will be quite pregnant and wanting to rest randomly. I’ve seen some posts about light and tiny folding chairs that can be zipped into a pouch and carried. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I might find one in Shanghai once I land?

Discussion Dating apps in Shanghai. Is is a scam or not?

Why are all girls in Shanghai on dating apps so eager to meet? Are they fake? Is this a scam? I'm not used to this that's why I'm suspicious.
