Benchmark/Thermal Test Midori 5L - 9700X / 5070 thermal testing and minor mods

I’ve had this Midori 5L for a little while now and finally decided to properly benchmark it before I start changing too much. The goal is basically to see how optimized I can get a genuinely tiny 5L system while still keeping it practical enough to use every day.

Current setup:
[Case]: Midori 5L
[CPU]: Ryzen 7 9700X
[GPU]: MSI RTX 5070 deshrouded with Noctua fans + EIGA Shroud
[Motherboard]: ASUS ROG Strix B850-I
[RAM]: 32GB TeamGroup T-Create DDR5-6000 CL30 + ZCOOI Mugitya Studio heatsinks
[Storage]: 4TB WD Black SN850X
[Cooler]: Noctua NH-L9a
[Fans]: 5x Noctua NF-A9x14 Chromax Black
[PSU]: Enhance 600W Platinum Modular Flex ATX

PCIe is currently forced to Gen 3 because the stock riser has been unstable at Gen 4.

Baseline performance

Benchmark Result
Cinebench R23 Multi 18,373
Cinebench R23 Single 2,165
Time Spy Overall 20,106
Time Spy Graphics 22,013
Steel Nomad 5,287
Speed Way 5,834
Speed Way Stress Test 98.6% stability

For a more realistic test, I also ran 10 back-to-back Cyberpunk benchmarks at 2560×1600, RT Overdrive, DLSS Auto, Ray Reconstruction On and Frame Generation Off.

Cyberpunk 10-run test Result
Average FPS 54.24
Average minimum 48.36
Average maximum 61.01
GPU temp ~71.8°C avg
GPU hotspot ~83.0°C avg
GPU power ~216W avg
Effective clock ~2835 MHz

What surprised me was how little performance dropped as the case heat-soaked. FPS and clocks stayed extremely consistent across all 10 runs.

Speed Way thermals before vs after first mods:

I’ve already made a few small changes: swapped the RAM heatspreaders for the ZCOOI Mugitya ones, redid some cable management, reapplied thermal paste and cleaned up some of the airflow/ducting.

Metric Before After Change
GPU Core Avg 76.0°C 75.1°C -0.9°C
GPU Hotspot Avg 86.7°C 85.8°C -0.9°C
VRAM Junction Avg 81.8°C 80.8°C -1.0°C
GPU Power Avg ~250W ~250W Same
Effective GPU Clock 2764 MHz 2774 MHz +10 MHz
GPU Fan Avg 2270 RPM 2117 RPM -153 RPM
Stability 98.6% 98.6% Same

So nothing dramatic yet, but getting roughly 1°C lower temps at the same ~250W while also running the GPU fans ~150 RPM slower is a nice start.

I’m not comparing the RAM temperatures yet because the post-mod run was accidentally done with EXPO disabled after a CMOS reset, so I’ll redo that properly at DDR5-6000.

Next I want to start actually tuning the system: GPU undervolt/OC, PBO + Curve Optimizer, tighter memory timings and fan curves, while keeping the same benchmarks so I can track exactly what each change does.

Longer term I’m considering an AXP90-X36 + 96mm 4070 FE Nidec fan, custom 3D-printed airflow/exhaust shrouds, a better Gen 4/5 riser, and eventually a 9800X3D. I’m also waiting to see how a custom GPU heatsink being developed for the Midori turns out, if it works well, I’d love to eventually squeeze a 5070 Ti or better into ~5L.

Let me know what you think and if you have any questions!

Thanks for reading!

Prototype/Concept/Custom 3D Printed Steam Machine

May I present my DIY Steam Machine build in a custom 3D printed case.

It’s 15 liters (200mm wide, 300mm deep and 250mm high excluding the 15mm feet). Could have made it a bit smaller in hindsight, but I wanted good airflow, low noise and an easy build. It was also designed to fit within (and make maximum use of) my Prusa Core Ones build plate size of 250x220mm.

I was well aware going into this that I couldn’t have picked a worse time to build a PC, so made use of what I already had available. I took the 32GB DDR5 SODIMM kit and 2TB NVME from a Beelink Ser6 Max that I’m not really using (downgraded to 16GB RAM which I had to buy, and 1TB SSD from another PC) and replaced the SF600 in my home server with a used SF450.

Because the 32GB DDR5 kit I had was SODIMM - and I didn’t fancy using SODIMM-DIMM adapters - I went for a Minisforum BD775i SE motherboard, with a Noctua NF-A12x25 G2.

I went for a single Noctua NF-A14x25r G2 case fan. Thought about using the 200mm but the G2 seemed like a better option, the same airflow but higher static pressure.

I thought about doing a sandwich layout but decided against it because I didn’t want the additional cost and complexity of a riser, and size wasn’t a major constraint for me.

The case can accommodate a 250mm GPU. I currently have an MSI RTX 3050LP 6GB in it which I had in an Optiplex build (that this PC will replace), but I have a dual fan ASUS 9060XT 16GB on the way which will complete the build. I plan on designing an intake manifold/plenum in between the bottom grill and GPU fans to feed it with cool air and add more positive pressure to the case.

The single case fan on the front is currently configured as an intake, but I’m going to try it as an exhaust as well and see what the thermals are like both ways.

The case is all 3D printed in PLA. 15 parts in total. I used almost 1KG of the blue, but that included one failed print. The structural parts are all 10mm thick, 5 perimeters and 15% infill. The grills are designed as solid pieces but printed with no top and bottom layers to expose the infill. The wider meshes are 15% honeycomb and the tighter meshes are 30% honeycomb. The intake for the PSU fan on the left side panel was made by using a modifier cylinder in Prusa Slicer to change the infill density in that area relative to the rest of the part.

The grills are attached using threaded inserts and countersunk machine screws, the frame is all held together with self tapping screws.

The illuminated power button, front USB ports and 30x15mm isolation feet were all from Ali.

I’m considering sanding it but it would be a hell of a task so I’m just going to leave it as it is for now.

Any comments, feedback or suggestions welcome.

Summary of specs:

Motherboard: Minisforum BD775i SE
CPU: Ryzen 7 7745HX (mobile CPU soldered on MB)
RAM: 32GB (2x16) Crucial 5600MHz DDR5
SSD: 2TB WD Black
PSU: Corsair SF600 SFX
GPU: RTX 3050 LP 6GB —> 9060XT 16GB

Detailed Build Log Jonsbo TK-0 “Wireless” RTX5070

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Built my wife a mini beast.
This is my first itx build 😅

Case: Jonsbo TK-0

GPU: msi shadow 2x Oc RTX5070
“Wireless” DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS, your gpu might catch on fire. I did it so you don’t have to, experimental. (So far so good)

CPU: Ryzen 5 7600X3D
Probably could have gone with a 9800X3D but this one is easier to cool and wont really bottleneck the 5070 much.

AIO cooler: thermaltake TH120.
Removed rgb face, replaced with 2.1inch lcd. (Couldn’t find a 120mm aio with a screen)

Motherboard: Soyo eternal b850i itx.
Its Chinese, bios kinda sucks, no support from soyo.
Don’t recommend if you have a short fuse. Took me an hour to configure ram profile. And another hour to get a modded open rgb from soyo (non pawn io version, so windows detects it as a virus. Also had to make a Chinese baidu account to download it) just for rgb control 🥲.

RAM: tforce delta DDR5 32GB 6000mt cl30
Got it cheap on facebook marketplace. Didnt match the aesthetics so I replaced the heat spreader.

Storage: Adata 2tb nvme. Gen 4
Gen5 is a scam, I have it on my main rig, not worth.

PSU: gamemax sfx 850w
$100 on amazon 🙌🏻

Build/Battlestation Pics I bought a 3D printer for this

And I’m so happy I did. Shoutout to [u/](u/NextGen3D)[NexGen-3D](u/NextGen3D) for the amazing case design, magnificent work.

For the unfamiliar, this is a 6L case made specifically for the cryptomining-turned-Linux-powerhouse board known as the Asrock BC250. The board centers around a cut down version of the PS5 APU with 16GB GDDR6. Instead of 36cu GPU and 8 core CPU, the BC250 uses a 24cu GPU and 6 core GPU; that being said it is trivially easy to unlock many (not all) of the boards all the way up to 40cu GPU and 8 core CPU. You can even go so far to add an overclock if your cooling and silicon quality are up for it.

The boards are available on eBay for between $200-$300 these days. If I don’t count the start up costs of buying the 3D printer and only account for the cost of filament, the board, PSU, SSD, and accessories like usb adapters then I’m in to this for about $500 total.

Build/Parts Check Trailer for "ITX shipping container SFF case"

I had a Overtek ITX shipping container case and I bought a "serious" trailer for the case.

Recently I sold the case, but the trailer stays.

I just try my luck here to see if anyone who has the container case wants the trailer.

Here is the link to the r/hardwareswap. More pictures in the below thread.

Build/Battlestation Pics Custom wood 10 drive, AI/Home-lab SFF

This is more of an artistic endeavour than an optimisation of performance or longevity.

It runs 10 drives through two PCIe x1 splitters, an Intel Arc b60 pro 24gb for llama swap models, a mid range AM5 chip, 32GB DDR5, and a SF750 PSU. It is running reasonably reliably with Truenas Scale (proxmox maybe at some point).

I spent a long time considering heat flows. The drives have a simple positive pressure flow from front to back. In the computing section, air is exhausted out the front; in being so it is drawn over the GPU (negative pressure), and gets air pushed in by a smaller fan at the rear. The GPU is far from ideal, currently I designed a custom TPU shroud to direct cool air through the passive GPU from the internal end, and out the back (IO direction). With a standard dual fan GPU (the original intent), it just pulls fresh air from the side.

Keen for your feedback or thoughts, throwaway account for privacy, but I will be checking for any questions or comments :).

Build/Battlestation Pics “Pearl” SGPC K39 Build

Thumbnail

Just wanted to share my build in the K39, as there wasn’t much out there when I was doing research for my build!

Say hi to Pearl!

CPU: 5600x
GPU: Zotac 4060 Solo
PSU: Silverstone Flex 600W
RAM: 32GB DDR4 G.Skill
Mobo: Gigabyte AC 520i

CPU and GPU are undervolted as far I could go without diminishing returns, helps temps A TON in this small case, under full load CPU and GPU never exceed 65C. As well as keeping temps down helps with noise a ton, which isn’t that bad if you wear headphones.

On the topic of noise, I do recommend overspec on your PSU- I had the 400w at first but the fan was super loud because of the power draw, go with a bigger one (600W) and your ears will thank you…

I love this thing, it fits in a backpack and can easily be hauled around for lan parties or just gaming on the go. The mini WiFi antennas are a must as well to keep size compact.

Any other questions or suggestions to make it better are welcome, I’m all about maximizing performance in such a small package!

This is a GPU Anti-Sag support that can be fixed at the end of the graphics card. It keeps the GPU very stable during transportation, preventing damage from shaking or vibrations. I also made it adjustable so it can fit various graphics cards, like the 5080 FE, Prime 5080, 5070 FE, or Dual 5070—they're all compatible. In the future, I plan to make a version out of aluminum alloy. Anyone interested in that?

Build/Battlestation Pics Sharing progress I've made with my long running Node 202 project.

Thumbnail
gallery
30 Upvotes

This started just over 2 years ago when I wanted to run an AIO in my 202 but wanted to take advantage of the wasted space available. It started as a proof of concept by making my own custom AIO where the fan and radiator is stacked on top of the AIO pump. Thermal performance was okay, unfortunately to get things to fit I had to do a lot of cutting on the fan housing to get the fan blades as close to the radiator fins as possible. Unfortunately the end result was still being 2-3mm too high and the outer shell would bulge outwards!

That eventually evolved to me wanting to run a full custom cooling loop and basing the packaging off the original idea, and that would also solve the height issue. The next challenge was finding a CPU block that would be low enough to allow it. Eventually I came up with a solution which is a hybrid of a universal CPU and GPU block from AliExpress.

The next issue was the RAM height and the WI-FI RF shielding preventing the fan and radiator from sitting lower down. I was able to work around the RF shielding by cutting a notch into the corner of the fan. The RAM clearance was solved by just buying ULP sticks.

So where I'm at now is making a cradle to hold the radiator and fan, which will attach to the mounting bracket of the CPU block underneath. I currently have one made up out of some aluminium bar held together with adhesive, and there are definitely further tweaks and improvements to be made. I'm hoping to get it finished up before Christmas, and I can't wait to show the final result at the end!

Build/Parts Check What is a good ITX Pc case for 2 fan gpu's?

I've been wanting to make a sff gaming pc for a while now but I've been putting it off for a number of reasons. Part of that problem is that all the GPU's I've been looking at don't fit inside the ITX T40 Metalfish 7L case. But it's been happening so much that honestly I'm wondering if it'd be worth just switching cases.

So what would be the best yet smallest pc case that could fit something like an rtx 3060ti or an rx 6700 xt? All help would be greatly appreciated.

Assembly Help Trouble training larger ddr5 dimms on sff motherboard?

Post image
33 Upvotes

I am trying to upgrade my memory from 32 >96 gb for local AI tinkering but the new dimm's won't train.

Current memory trains and runs fine. I have now tried installing 2 separate sets of 48 x memory, but while they pass memtest 86, neither will train fully, the orange memory light just sits on forever/overnight without turning off or booting all the way into windows.

At the suggestion of Google I have tried all of the following, individually and in combination:

  1. turning off expo

  2. installing one dimm at at a time (still doesn't finish training after >45 minutes)

  3. installing one dimm at a time in secondary rather than primary memory slot

  4. clearing cmos

  5. updating bios to most recent release, updating bios to older more "stable" releases (currently running bios 1654 released in April)

  6. turning off memory context restore

  7. manually setting ram speed to 4800 mhz

My whole system is only about 1 year old and thus far used rarely for dad gaming:

Asus ROG Strix B-850i gaming wifi mobo

AMD 9800x3d

Asus Prime 5070ti

Samsung 9100 pro 2tb ssd

G.SKILL Flare X5 Series 32GB (2x16GB) Up to 6000MT/s* CL36-36-36-96 1.35V (F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5)

Corsair SF 1000 PSU

Coolermaster Atmos II 240mm AIO

COOJ SF5 case

Windows 11

I have tried both of the memory kits, purchased new from Newegg:

G.SKILL Flare X5 96GB (2 x 48GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000 (PC5 48000) Desktop Memory Model F5-6000J3036F48GX2-FX5

G.SKILL Ripjaws S5 Series 96GB (2 x 48GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 5200 (PC5 41600) Desktop Memory Model F5-5200J4040A48GX2-RS5K

Neither will finish training but after popping the old memory back in the system boots right back up with no issues. What am I doing wrong?

(cross posting an a few places besides sffpc because I'm desperate and need to return at least one of the memory kits quickly)

Reddit please help!

Update - I updated to the very most recent (non beta) bios but this didn’t cut it. Only one 96gb kit listed under my mobo’s QVL and out of stock everywhere. Toying with the idea of switching to an Asrock Lightning B850i as they list a LOT more 96 GB kits on their QVL list (unfortunately not one in my possession) but this seems like a lot of work.

Build/Parts Check Planning for Modultra 5090 WOBO

Huge shout out to Modultra for sharing this. Ditching my formd t1 for a Ncase M3 and doing a triple rad custom loop with pneumatic fittings.

So far I’ve got:

3x ST20 280mm rad from Alphacool
2x ST30 280mm X-flow rad from Alphacool
1x ST30 240mm X-flow rad from Alphacool
CPU block will be Modultra Lobo (wondering if DDCZero pump swap will be possible)
2X NF-A14X25 G2 PP set
1X NF-A12x25 G2 PP set
2X silverstone slim 140mm fan
SF1000 PSU with ZCooi custom cables
I’ll be also using the WVP2 and custom mounting it wherever feasible.

Got a bunch of radiators since I’m not fully sure what I’ll be able to fit and low stock made me rather buy once and cry once than to have to deal with scalpers or resellers.

5090 will be undervolted at 890/2827. 9950X3D is stable for me at -35 CO. Hoping these undervolts help me if I need to mix slim rads and fans to make it fit neatly as possible.

Now just the grueling wait until they start shipping in December 💔💔💔
