Debating on CMPE or RMET MN as a SWEN/CSEC BS/MS major.

I am planning on choosing a minor as the title suggests. I am curious if anyone has minored in either one or has a full major in it.

If I choose RMET my path would (theoretically) be:

RMET - 340, 341, 585, 571, 587

MCET 220

I like the idea of visible results and working with HMIs, PLCs, and Ladder Logic. My parents (EEEE alums at RIT) are in that field so I have connections.

If I choose CMPE my path would (theoretically) be:

CSCI - 141

MATH- 190 (already taking it)

CMPE 160, 250, 350 380, (toss up between 460 and 663, leaning 663)

I like the idea of learning Assembly because SWEN is all high-level programming (though you do learn C in SWEN-250).

None of these will have classes that double count in my major, if one would it would be CMPE, however, its unlikely. And, again, I like the idea of these concepts as I have no prior experience with them, which is why I am hoping to get some insight.

My goal is to diversity myself in the hardware side. I like the controls aspect of RMET, which is what I am kind of leaning towards, but I don't want to rule out CMPE. I am currently on track for SWEN/CSEC BS/MS but I think I want to switch to full SWEN...though CyberCorps (with CSEC MS) is very intriguing but would lock me into a career for a set amount of time.

I am a first year, so I have a lot of time but I want to have a foundation for the future.

Hi everyone! I realized to my dismay that I lost my Leatherman multitool at some point in the last couple of days. If you come across a Leatherman Wingman with a blade with a broken tip, that’s probably mine! Would be very grateful to anyone who spots it, as I use it fairly frequently. TIA!

My friend came back to their room and the fucking window frame just fell off the fucking wall and now they might be moved to temp housing while they "fix" it. Supposedly RIT renovated this building two years ago but they must have done jack shit cause this isn't even the only thing. In our suite let alone the whole floor. There's mold in vents and holes in people's walls on other rooms. This building feels like it should be condemned at this point. There's so much else that is dirty and disgusting in this building not to mention it has a perpetual smell of rot and mold in some places. DO NOT LIVE IN ELLINGSON

I'm wondering how hard it will be to get an internship in NYC for computer engineering. I plan to have good projects, but in general, how hard is it for the average student to get a co-op or internship in NYC for hardware roles?

rit is a safety school like for if i dont get into uwaterloo i do want to check out the campus and the environment of the US it'd be my first time in the US like i wanna meet the students and see generally what people be doing in terms of co op and in general the quality of the school especially since nowadays i feel like a strong co op program can heavily impact my decision (e.g uoft focuses a lot more on academic rigor)

Serious Gender dysphoria

I want to ask trans students here at RIT,

How do you deal with gender dysphoria / body dysmorphia? I’m a trans man and don’t have access to hormone therapy for now, and I’ve been really struggling with my self-esteem. I’ve been doing great academically, I make sure to socialize and walk around campus as much as possible without isolating myself, exercise, eat healthy, make friends, and balance my work time and hobbies. These has helped me, but no matter what I do, there’s always that feeling in the back of my head that I will never escape my body and voice; this is what I am and I am stuck with it for the rest of my life. It makes my heart feel heavy every time I think about it.
If I had a choice, I would not want to be transgender. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with being transgender of course, but I am tired of feeling I haven’t made any progress. Why do I care so much about what I look like and sound like?
By putting these feelings in a more positive perspective, I look back to my teenage years and I can see how much I have improved so after all I have made progress. My mental health has improved since then and I have gotten stronger and I push myself more and more everyday. In that way, I do like myself more since I feel proud of myself, and I will continue to live my life, no matter how hard it gets.

I do also plan to begin going to therapy, since it would be very bad if I kept it all to myself. Despite therapy, what have you done for yourself to keep going and stay hopeful?

How realistic is landing a co-op as an international student at RIT?

I’m an international student here at RIT and looking ahead toward the co-op hunt. I know CPT, OPT requirements and sponsorship limitations can make things tricky, but what were your experiences with finding co-op? Did you find most opportunities through RIT career fairs, handshake, or even personal networking? Any specific advice for starting the search early?

Survey Coffee ordering app prototype test

Hello, I'm a 4th year student and for an assignment in my Prototyping & Usability Testing class, I've been tasked with making a prototype ordering app for a fictional coffee joint. As part of the assignment I have to collect user data/feedback on it, so if you have time please take roughly 10-15 minutes on the Google Form (in which the prototype is linked). https://forms.gle/SA63BDTwJKfZaaYs6

Thanks

Anyone heading towards South-Western Pennsylvania for Fall break?

If you’ll be driving somewhere to/past South-Western Pennsylvania and you don’t mind a stranger taking an extra seat, I could use the ride. Could cover some of the gas to get there.

I know this is a Hail Mary but I’d figure I would try :P

is it worth it for me to apply to RIT

im graduating this year, and im finally working on filling out college apps. over the past year or two, ive looked at my options and pretty much resigned myself to being a SUNY student since its whats affordable for me. im not against SUNY at all, and its definitely a much safer choice for me, but RIT is an aspirational pick. so, i want a genuine answer of if you think its worth it for me to apply.

for starters, i see a lot of people say they wouldnt recommend RIT because of the area. ill say i really like rochester from the few times ive been around there. i dont mind that it's a cold area, or particularly car dependent. i also dont mind that its less of a traditional "college" atmosphere. im a relatively introverted autistic guy, so im not really the party type, and i refuse to drink (adhd+family addiction history+depression+irish ancestry is a combo i am NOT testing), so its not like i would go to them even if they were there. but if i attend, it would be my first time living in a city, so feel free to give me warnings about city life if you feel theyre necessary.

im interested in both the animation and game design/development majors. i have a lot of experience both with art/animation and programming, so i wouldn't be going into them blind. on my current application (which i have yet to submit), i listed animation as my first choice and game design/development as my second, but im not sure if theres a particular major thats better or "more worth it".

im unfortunately in the income bracket where i dont think im likely to receive much need-based financial aid (despite not actually getting to use much of that money), and im not sure about merit. ive yet to apply at all though, so ive received no offers of financial aid yet. i dont mind having student loans ill need to pay off, but im not sure how bad the loans will be. im also thinking about potentially doing a year at a SUNY school and transferring to RIT if possible to offset some of the cost (my sister did this, but it was between SUNY schools (WCC and SUNY Buffalo), so im not sure what the logistics would be like or if it would actually help.

looking at my academics compared to what they list for the animation major, im at the high end of their ACT and SAT scores (a 33 composite and a 1350 respectively), but i fall below their GPA (an 87.975, with a 92 listed as the low part of their range). im not sure how much they take GPA into account in comparison to test scores, though, or if that grade would drag me down. im the type with good test scores- i have 4s and 5s on every AP ive taken, and i only took the SAT and ACT once for those scores- but slightly lower overall grades (the curse of being a relatively smart person with adhd).

i also will say i dont think i have a lot of extracurriculars to make me look impressive. i have a part time job, im part of skillsusa and my schools yearbook, and thats about it. if you want to count it, one of my friends dragged me into being on my schools bowling team with her for a year or two, but i dont think thats worth including on an application. ive spent most my time in school keeping my schedule free because i like having time to myself to do art (which granted, is what im trying to go to school for), so i dont have much to show off or say about myself. i know they have a hobby section on their application, but im not even sure how to list "drawing constantly in my free time for as long as ive been sentient" in a somewhat-professional sounding way. i dont really have many awards beyond the ones collegeboard gives (the ap, school, and rural town recognition ones) (and i guess a national latin exam award, if it matters to literally anyone).

i do think my art has the potential to be up to par. im going to a portfolio review next month to get an idea of what i need to work on or if im up to their artistic standards, but i just want to know from this if its worth even applying to them. im not a particularly impressive student, but theyre my current top choice if the stars align.

also unrelated to most of this, ive taken one college course already (a precalc class at WCC, since i do BOCES and my schedule has ended up very weird because of it so i couldnt fit precalc into my schedule at my own school. i also had schedule complications so i couldnt take calc at my school either). ive heard RIT can be weird about if itll accept credits like that, so is it likely to carry over or will i have to retake it? it wouldnt be the end of the world if i had to, since if i did it once i can do it again, but it would be a little annoying.

pretty much any feedback or info would be valued. thanks :3

Serious Last Minute Call to Help Start a Figure Skating Team

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I am trying to start a figure skating team at RIT. It would be to learn and practice figure skating skills, and if skaters are interested, compete in intercollegiate competitions.

It took a while for club sports to get back to me and in the past week, I haven’t managed to get enough skaters. In order to apply for a team, we need to have 10 skaters (currently have five) who’d put their names down as members by October 9th.

Founding members would get to help decide how much this would cost, practice times, if we get a coach, and if we compete.

You don’t have to have any experience in skating. If we practice at RIT, there aren’t rental skates so you’d probably have to get your own, but if we practice at another rink that offers rentals, you’d be good to go.

If you’re interested, please join the Discord. If you know anyone who would be interested, please pass the information on.
