Discussion The issue with the prizing change is the timing - not the change itself

For what its worth, I understand the people who genuinely like playing lesser champions and getting rewarded for it and have practiced a lot for the tournament will get stiffed but this was definitely a move for the better. I truly feel for those who made travel plans and testing regimes based on what they had known. Sure it could have been announced a long time ago but its an ever changing landscape where rules have to change on little notice to combat undesireable things (whether it be farming prize wall metals or otherwise)

First of; the best of system or at least the intention behind it is fantastic. It creates diversity and fixes the 2-5 meta deck problem a lot of TCG's have. The problem is the price tag on the secondary market completly warping the dynamics where you are now incentivised to win those as opposed to trying to win the whole tournament, or as its designed, to play a lesser champion for genuine fun.

RQ's are already in an awkward position where the best EV play is often to not even play the main event and do a combination of ODE's, Pre-Reg, Super Saturday, Rebound Sunday and farm prize wall items. The Best-Of System further exacerbates this by making players steer away from winning the main because you can play the best deck come some high spot and walk away with less than someone who got 257th by playing a champ that 7 people were playing.

Furthermore Best-Of, would be fantastic if it was genuinely given to the people that were Best-Of by way of authentically winning genuine games of Riftbound. Unfortunately that is not the case. The system is plagued by syndicates forming 12 way handshakes, calculated match fixing, bribery and other forms of collusion.

Without this change, the RC would likely have been 400 players of which 80 of them are playing Ahri and 50 of them have a secret handshake where they all walk away with a sum of money, another 40 playing Akali etc and like 7 players playing Renata or something and its really just not a good representation of the game and terrible for optics. RQ's continuing to have Best-Of's as is should be fine but RC is a higher level of competition and should be a more accurate representation of the meta with the playerbase attempting to win the event, not a car/house worth of money on the secondary market. RC's should absolutely be about who is the best RB player in the room, not a best-of farm.

Ultimately, the success of the game is that people are entering to play for fun or to win; not ideally for financial gain. For competitive players who want to win, this realistically changes nothing for you. For those wanting money; this is not owed to you and shouldn't be your incentive for playing the game. If that's your incentive to turn up to events; you may want to reconsider your hobbies or why you're playing the game. I get that there isn't a single solution that would appease everyone but something had to be done about it

If anything Riot is a production company primarily and a gaming company secondarily. This is generally why they have lighter infraction penalties, as well as allowing takebacks in many scenarios. They want events to be a spectacle that everyone can enjoy and have something to do and want to go back to. They emphasise player experience and unfortunately the whole Best-Of system brought out the worst in a handful of people which effectively robs other players' tournament experience. Yes they're stuck between a rock and a hard place with the promise they made and fixing a system which is fundamentally broken

To further cascading issues; it creates logistical nightmares with staffing. Generally speaking, in TCG's you have about 1 judge per 50 players for coverage. For Day2 of RQLA, there was 60 judges for just over 400 players. Thats 1 per 7. And half of these judges were solely assigned to float near people in contention of best-of to reduce the opportunity of collusion/matchfixing to occur. That's insanity for staff resource allocation and not what judges should be doing.

It creates a lot of feel bad situations. Consider a player just missing out on top 8 playing the perceived best deck. They walk away with not a lot despite an incredibly good and often topping record. How do they feel compared to someone who say 50th who walked away with a 4-5 digit sum of money with 4 secret handshakes, someone who came 130th who walked away with a 5 digit sum of money then had to pay people half of it and someone who came 330th who barely scraped in playing a deck that 4 other people were playing? Yes I get top 4 with a deck that didn't have Best-Of also sucks, but that person knew that going into the tournament.

For optics; sure I can get by this. I understand a lot of people like to follow the narrative of underdog decks and see variety and not the 7th Kennen mirror of the day. But its the RC, one of the supposed pinnacles of gaming. To me it kind of sounds like watching like the F1 but also there's a minigame where the highest performing person on a pedal bike also gets a $10,000 prize and so does the fastest unicyclist and while the second fastest Mercedes gets nothing.

Overall, the people vocally mad about this are very few of the genuine people wanting to play their pet deck and mostly from people who don't even have their invite to this RC.

TLDR: See title.

Discussion What is your opinion on playing with proxies?

Basically what the title says.

It can be with your friends at the kitchen table or at your locals. But what is your opinion on the matter and what is the overall consensus in the game/community?

Edit: For all that have responed until now or will respond thank you for your participation. I was legitimately curious about it and was asking this in different TCGs Subs. Not only to see what different TCGs think about it, but also because I myself play a lot of different TCGs. In addition, I made some experiences in the past with people having extreme opinions on Proxies or locals banning them because of rather stupid reasons when most people didn't really care about them or like some commenters said here even encouraged themselves to just play with them.

For an extra clarification: Yes, I was talking about Kitchen Table/with friends or locals. Competitive settings like bigger events was never a discussion.

Promotional Me and my buddies have created a RiftBounds memory game.

Mostly that, with my play buddies, we created a quick Daily Challenge game where you have to guess cards from their cropped or blurred images. It ranks you against other players, and then you can share your results with other friends on WhatsApp or other channels.

The game is called www.riftdash.win

We are looking for feedback and people to play with it and tell us what makes it fun and what makes it boring. For this week we made it so its only about new cards.

I'm pretty bad, so with today's set of cards I only got this:

------
riftdash.win #6 October 15

33😅 33😅 100🎯 34😅 33😅

Final score: 233 😅

Top 93.3% today 📈

One of my favorite things about card games is meshing it with my love for art. This piece took me 18 hours and over 54 thousand brushstrokes to complete and I’m very happy with how it turned out!

I’ll definitely be turning this into a proxy <:

Discussion Regional Championship prizing change is a great decision!

• Upvotes

People crying about not getting their plated legend by placing #2000 in the ranking is just sad.. It's a Championship, it's supposed to be competitive!! They don't want people to play their B-game just for prizing. The ON-olateds are there because people.would bring their AA-game and try to genuine be the best of the best.

TLDR: If you go to the RC, you go there to win it, not for plated greed.

Question Why are takebacks allowed?

I'm extremely confused as to why this is permitted at all? No other game would say this is ok.

Could we introduce a chess style of rule where once you lift your hand off the card there's no reversals?

Or introduce a spell that reverses moves as a 7cost or something?

I don't understand how this can be played competitively while letting people completely ruin the flow of game.

Question What colour to add?

Im currently playing only red/yellow decks, and was wondering which colour should i add to my rotation to add other decks.

For red and yellow, which colour would fit better? Thinking in possible combinations between red/X and yellow/X

Would like something strong, but not necessarily top meta. Fun is more important to me.

Discussion New "Best of" changes are...yikes

To those not in the know, "Best of" metals are now awarded on placement, NOT placing the highest on your champion.

There is now no point in playing low tiers in a regional. Every matchup is going to be a stale "rock paper scissors" of the same 4-5 legends.

Let's say I mained Renata Glasc in league. I love her, love playing low tiers, and enjoy that struggle. So me and four other Renata players show up to a regionals to fight the meta and do theit best to have the best showing, solwly to be the "best" renata player...no matter how poorly I place.

Now? There's no point to that. Play PG yi, kennen, azir, Irelia, and Akali to win. This is going to be spiritforged's "Draven vs Draven" bracket all over again.

This stinks.

Discussion Hot Take

So this was just revealed today, KDA x LV collab. And this Art of Evelyn is so good. I was just wondering what’s the thought process of Riot’s Riftbound team making a battlefield that looks like a promo card as an ultimate this season? When they can clearly come up with much greater options such as Evelyn KDA x LV card. Imagine that art on a foiled card, collectors would go crazy.

Question Do you think Booster packs from Pre-Rift kit is better than normal Booster packs?

(Sorry for my awkward English)

Do you think Booster packs from Pre-Rift kit is better than normal Booster packs?

According to my personal experience, I'd say yes.

The only Showcase card that I have is from Pre-Rift kit and I don't pull any kind of Showcase or Overnumbered from display although I bought quite many displays until now.

But of course I don't have much experience of Pre-Rift, as this event doesn't happen so often.

So I'd like to hear your cases

Thanks

Discussion Stuttgart RQ Lee sin player here

I wanted to play leesin in stuttgart. Played 200+ games on him and trained with my group. Now its away. I think its a more fair system now but it is just not enaugh time to switch. This change kills all my hopes and i would still play it if there would be at least a normal foiled metal...not even that. I'm incredible frustrated right now.

Question Giving Riftbound a try, What are some Budget but effective decks to get into?

Coming from competitive yugioh, I'm someone who enjoys winning, but I don't necessarily want to win just because I'm playing the best deck in the format. A big part of the enjoyment for me comes from skill expression and succeeding with a deck I genuinely enjoy, even if it isn't the absolute best deck available.

At the same time, I'm not really a casual player who's content with playing a weak deck and losing more often just because I like the archetype. I still want to play something with a high enough ceiling to realistically top an event. I hate losing, so playing a deck that simply isn't capable of competing at that level isn't enjoyable to me either.

For me, there's a balance. I want a deck that's genuinely competitive and capable of winning an event, but I don't necessarily want the deck that's so powerful that its strength overshadows my own skill expression. Winning isn't satisfying when it feels like the deck did most of the work, but neither is playing an underpowered deck where I feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle regardless of how well I play. The sweet spot for me is a deck that's strong enough to compete at the highest level, but still rewards experience, decision-making, matchup knowledge, and technical play enough that I feel like my own ability meaningfully contributed to the result.

Decks I enjoyed from Yugioh were usually midrange decks that don't auto win, dragon link bystial era 2022, earth machines, branded, etc. My budget would be ideally around $100 for my deck less for my wife since she wouldn't care as much for competitiveness, but ideally her deck shouldn't be too weak either because it wouldn't be fun destroying her with no opportunity for her to win. Most bang for my buck if a deck's cheaper but not much weaker than other deck options I'm more open to that since I'm trying this game out. I'd be willing to spend a lot more once I feel fully invested.

So with that in mind, what decks would you recommend? I want to get my wife into it as well. She probably would like a deck with cute art style and not too complicated.

Also how much of preparation is needed to win? In Yugioh you needed to know all the meta decks and their choke points to be a competent player, making the game feel more like studying session and merely doing a knowledge check at tournaments. How much of the game play in riftbound is a knowledge check of what your opponents deck capabilities are vs being able to read game states as they come?

Discussion Top 18 most valuable Riftbound Signature cards right now.

Post image
243 Upvotes

I put together the 18 most expensive Signature cards across all four sets so far.

A few things that stood out to me:

  • The top 4 are all above $3,000
  • After that there’s a huge drop, since #5 is already around $1,570.
  • Vendetta is the newest set and already has 5 cards in the top 14 (Akali, Zed, Jayce, Kennen, Mel).
  • Origins still holds 7 of the 18 spots.
