Hi all,
So, this july, my souldog suddenly, unexpectedly crossed the rainbowbridge. I have OCD, and one of my biggest compulsions was about his wellbeing. So him dying when I was away from home was my biggest fear come to live.
I'm still grieving, but it's going better. In the beginning of August, I was wondering how I would ever know what next dog would match us, until I came across him: amonst all the puppers I scrolled by, I suddenly saw him... Having a plushie in his mouth, showing it to the camera. Exactlly the same plushy my boy had... And I knew... this is him.
He comes from Spain, is 7 months old and arrived by Happy bus 06-09. He was super scared, peed all over himself and me when they handed him to me. We drove home, and I placed him in his basket. He stayed there the rest of the night and next day. Only in the next evening, he started to sit up, take food from my hand etc.
The first 1,5-2 weeks this progressed. He got out to pee and poop on puppypads, he started to come out of his basket to take food from my hand, and more and more earlier on the evening, instead of holding everything until the night.
Then after a few days, he would hop on the couch with us, and sleep next to one of us on the couch, and go back to his basket at the morning.
Because he kept eating parts of his blanket, and me being scared of that causing obstruction, I wanted to replace his bed later in the evening, when he would be on the couch. That same morning, he was basically up all night with my BF, exploring the livingroom, terrace and even the yard. HUnfortunately he got startled by people passing by, and hid in the bushes. I tried 30 min to get him out, but he wouldn't. Totally shut down, snapped out of fear when I tried to pick him up. Eventually I had to partially walk/drag him back in.
I thought we ruined all progress, but at night he just joined us on the couch again and also kept walking around in the evening. We switched the beds, but he decided the new bed was scary. So ever since (more than 2,5 weeks now, he stays on the couch.
The thing is now, the longer he's on the couch, the more he seems regressing. Where as before he would explore during the night and evening, play, go over to his foodbowl/drink etc.... He is now holding it in until late in the night. If I don't offer, he will leave his food and water until night.
I would feed him snacks to help him show we mean no harm. I offer his food in his Kong and he eats. I offer him lactose free milk, thinned with water, he drinks it.
I probably shoudln't? But it just feels wrong to have a 7 month old puppy and not get him enough nutritions. People tell me I should place his bowl, take it away if he hasn't eaten in 10 mins, and place it back later in the day and eventually he will start eat.
I just start feeling restless. My OCD is flaring up, thinking all kinds of things that maybe he is ill, or I've done something wrong to setback his progress, or that if I don't fix this he might be malnutritioned or worse..
He just stays on the couch most of the time now. Instead of coming of and playing, he got up 1 time 2 nights ago, just to pee and poop and drink. Last night, he didn't even come off to pee at all. I notice the corner where he put himself smells a bit, so I assume now he just lets it run.
He is so scared and startled of basically everything. I've had a lot of dogs before with some issues but never this bad. The organisation told me he was anxious, but I had no idea it would be this bad.
I know 6 weeks is too short of a time, but I just want to make him feel comfortable so badly... I'm at a loss what to do best. Everyone gives opposite advice. Leave him, pet him, don't pet him, offer food, don't offer food, exposure, not pushing...
I just feel anxious and worried that we're in over our heads here. I just feel so dissappointed with myself I can't help him over this. Sometimes I even wonder if it was the right choice to take him away from his mom in the shelter.
I've seen a lot of posts here on similar shut down/anxious dogs. I hope someone can give me some reassurance that it will be fine :(
