New Temporary Rule (s)

Well, it's finally happened.

From what I can tell, a lot of posts lately have come from bots and/or karma farming accounts. And yes, they are mostly politically charged. It doesn't matter if I personally agree with many of them, it matters that they are generally redundant, not adding to grown-up discourse, and are not being commented on by the poster themselves.

It's a difficult decision, because I always have, and will continue for the most part, to let the sub self-moderate as much as possible. And some of these posts get a lot of up votes. Still, I've heard from enough of you. I'm going to limit these posts. I may be doing this a bit later than ideal, but I always err toward community driven moderation over heavy moderation.

What's that mean? Not exactly sure. But if I see the same person posting very similar content daily or more than daily I'm simply going to remove the posts. We'll see how it goes and I hope I don't have to do this for long.

And no, I'll never ban politics, or any topic. I'll only ban racism, homophobia, transphobia, hate speech, and obvious instigators not trying to have grown-up conversations. I don't have to do this very often and I hope that remains true.

And as always, I rely strongly on your reports. Please flag anything that meets this criteria and I'll do my best to keep this community a place for thoughtful conversation. But that will take effort from all of us.

Thanks everyone for being part of this sub. It's still mostly one of the best places on Reddit. We can make sure it stays that way. If you have suggestions on how to enforce this, I'd love to hear them. And of course, if you have reservations about this, fire away. Nothing is written in stone and your feedback is incredibly valuable.

Edit:

New rules added, so far:

  • Minimum Community Karma of 20 for posts. Anything under will simply be flagged for manual review.
  • One post per user per day. This affects a vanishingly small percentage of users. Any more will also be flagged for manual review.

How did you learn to push through to take action based on a cynical but always accurate judgement?

When you know where a contentious situation is headed deep down but don't want to take the pre-emptive action to mitigate/ protect or neutralize it now because it's too painful to admit.

Like being in a toxic work environment that is trying to squeeze you out but not filing the formal complaints, saving key documents, making a daily log etc to set yourself up for a wrongful dismissal claim because your soul hurts knowing that you are at that stage through no fault of your own.

Or seeing that once friend turn sour on you but hoping that it's just a phase cause they are going through a tough patch. But knowing that this is a slow road to a huge blow up.

If you're a former step parent whose no longer with the person with the kids, do you keep in touch with the kids? I've always wondered about this because it seems to me like a ton of folks are rambling around with little support, some needing all the help they can get.

TBH, this comes up, too, because I recently talked to an older woman I know whose son has one child of his own and like 3 that are his wife's kids. They're all under 15 and she makes a thing out of spoiling her specific grandchild and not much acknowledging the other kids. I kinda get it and it's def up to her. HOwever, I empathize with the other kids and wish she could be a tad more tactful about showing special attention to hert grandchild alone.

It's all linked because the gist here is how do you deal with literal kids who aren't yours or related to you in a way that respects all involved?

That you didn't really leave the house except for work, shopping, medical appointments and family obligations. That you got real cozy with a warm blanket, tea mug, books, podcasts and quality television shows.

Anyone know this artist?

Guessing 70s or 80s...Found this unique cat at a garage sale in a very nice neighborhood. It's an original, I think marker illustration? On nice thick paper, no pixels...

I've always enjoyed unique pieces and this guy called me back to him over and over so I finally grabbed it, all while my husband began doubting my judgement.

From what I've read on AI, with a huge grain of salt, it says Cricket was a common psuedonym back then. Cannot find anything similar enough to be positive.

Looking for ANY information. Style, medium. Artist.

Being boring should be considered a luxury lifestyle, not a personality flaw.

Somewhere along the way, humanity decided that if you're not traveling, partying, starting a business, running a marathon, healing your inner child, or drinking coffee in another country, you're wasting your life. Personally, I think sitting in a chair and experiencing absolutely nothing is one of civilization's greatest achievements. Our ancestors spent thousands of years fighting wolves, surviving plagues, and dying at 34 so that I could spend a Sunday staring at a ceiling fan without consequences. And now some guy named Brandon with a podcast wants me to wake up at 5 AM and optimize my potential? Absolutely not. I have reached the top of the food chain specifically to avoid unnecessary activities. We invented machines to do our work, medicine to extend our lives, and smartphones to entertain us, only to develop a culture where relaxing makes people feel guilty. At this point, doing nothing without feeling ashamed might be the most rebellious thing a human being can do. Maybe the real winners in life aren't the people constantly chasing experiences. Maybe they're the ones who can sit alone in a room for three hours without needing to turn it into a personal growth journey.

What were your initial thoughts when you first heard music of what is now called "hip hop/rap" ?

Usually in the late 80s for everyday people / early 80s for connected cool people.

A mesmerizing fusion of speech and beats?

Something revolutionary for social messaging?

A passing fad like disco?

A bunch of noise that hurt your ears?

What would need to happen to jumpstart the establishment of long-term care facilities--like state hospitals of the past--that could serve people with serious chronic mental illness? Telling thos who care for these people to, basically, fend for themselves, addressing things temporarily, Etc., is he

The way this kind of stuff is handled puts the 'there's help out there for anything, all the time' myth to shame.

Grownups Vote!! Register to vote and VOTE!

Looking for someone to blame for the mess we're in? You might need to look in the mirror. Of the people 18-24, only 58% were registered to vote and 47% of them actually voted. People 25-34 - only 68% of them were registered to vote and 56% voted.

So Redditors: IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO VOTE! Register to vote and VOTE! It's more important than ever.

Don't like the candidates? It's rare to find a "perfect" candidate so you will just have to pick the best of the field. These days, this is typically a Democrat but I am not advocating for any one party or candidate, only that you VOTE! It's important!!!!

Has anyone made peace that they just aren't wired to have traditional friends?

Like long term thru thick and thin intimate friends. More so situational friends based on a period you are going through (college, workplace etc) or catch up for a beer once a year with people from your past types.

Have you had success maintaining a friendship with a "viper" personality?

Someone that you like very much and has always been great to you but you know they have an ugly vindictive side when they are legitimately crossed. And you have always been subconsciously careful to always be overly respectful to them and never trip their wire even innocently.

Some examples:

That got even with a cheating ex partner by disclosing all the lurid details of their affair to their mutual network.

Whistleblew against a former employer that did a bad faith termination against them.

Trashed a business that mistreated them as a customer on every review and social media site possible.

Called the bylaw jurisdiction on a legit infraction to ding a nosy neighbour.

I just found out my college roommate was an absentee father after college.

I caught up with an old friend from college today, 26 years later. She was my roommate's girlfriend of 2 years, she got pregnant in her senior year, right after my roommate graduated.

My roommate was the nicest guy in the word. A little dumb, but a super nice guy. He moved back home, to another state, shortly after the kid was born, but I somehow told myself he was a part of his daughter's life. It was confirmed in my mind on facebook a couple of times when the girlfriend posted pictures of their daughter and he'd respond with a comment.

I asked her how much my old roommate's been in the (now grown) daughter's life and she said "Not at all. He hasn't seen her since she was about six months old."

My friend said he's never talked the daughter, and has only talked to HER a total of two times since their child was born, drunk dialing her after a couple of his relationships had gone south. When the daughter turned 18, he wrote her a long letter (sent to the mom), which basically said "The reason I never got to know you was because your mom wouldn't let me," which according to her was NEVER the case.

She offered the daughter the letter, asking if she wanted to read it, the daughter declined. She said she has a father, my friend's current husband who adopted her at age 5.

I've never met the daughter, she seems like a good person. But I just can't get over how two and a half decades later he's the kind to have never seen his own kid. I said to my friend "That's not the guy I knew, that's not like him at all" and she said "It's not the guy I knew either. He just wasn't ready to be a father."
