Why did people in the old days dress so well, when they could barely get clean?

I saw a picture the other day. It was a really old picture from the early 1900's of all these really well dressed people at the beach on a hot summer day. It didn't look like a special event, it just looked like a day at the beach.

Everyone looked great but it got me thinking about how bad people must have smelled. With today's access to clean running water, high tech washing machines, deodorants and body products, it would make far more sense for people today to dress like that.

Back then, they should have been wearing shorts and t shirts, instead of sweating like hogs and then having to wash three peice suits and ball gowns down in the river.

I don't expect anyone from that time to be on reddit to give a first hand account of why they dressed like they did... i just wonder why they made life so much harder on themselves when things were hard enough already.

How do monkeys clean their butts?

So looking at the mammalian family tree we have lots of butt-lickers. Cats, dogs, bats etc. Some don’t, notably marine mammals spring to mind.

We’re obviously wipers (or at least I hope we are) and that would’ve come with the stiffening of the spine and the upright walking and all that rot…

So what do monkeys do? Where in the evolutionary tree did we transition from lickers to wipers?

Would you eat a meal if you noticed a fly refuses to land on it?

Hi, so I’ve had this question in the back of my mind for a while, and it goes like this.

You’re at a restaurant, and your food has arrived. You’re just about to dig in when you notice a fly buzzing around. You watch the fly for a while and notice the fly gets close then right as you think it’s gonna land, it flies off. You see it do this about 2-3 more times going for more repeated attempts but never landing. Now begs the question

Would you eat the meal in front of you, knowing that a fly refuses to land on it?

Can some here explain what going on?

I’m wondering what is going on every time I get the cold I’m coughing way more than most people. Where most people cough than wait than cough than wait than cough.

Where I seem to cough than cough after the cough some times number times in roll. Also deep coughs seem trigger coughing spells one after other and some times chocking.

I’m wondering why that case and is this some thing should be address with doctor of signs of weak lung function

Would you rather assemble furniture with wood pegs and glue or screws?

I'm looking into making inexpensive, durable flat pack furniture (think IKEA that could handle a drunk friend falling on it)

I'd be pre drilling holes and providing either the dowel pins or screws.

My main concern with using screws is I don't know if it's reasonable to assume most people have a drill want to use a hand screwdriver on a bunch of 2x6s

Dowels and glue would require waiting for glue to dry

What type of lights are this called? The reason is most police departments don’t seem to go with this type of light setup.

Strange light setup what is this called has most police departments don’t have this.
