Punk music My Big 4...the first albums that got me into punk.
I can remember the exact moment that I bought these on cassette tape in the late 80s. This was the foundation of my lifelong love with punk music, my Mt. Rushmore if you will. Feeling nostalgic, so I'm posting this for you all to read.
Misfits - Legacy Of Brutality: Paid $7.99 using saved lunch money at the age of 14. Bought it because the cover looked ominous. Asked my dad to let me run into the record store on our way home from helping someone move some furniture. Went home and put it on and didn't know what to think of it. A week later it was the soundtrack to the rest of my life.
Dead Kennedys - Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death: Bought at the same store as The Misfits about a month later. Recognized the DK logo from the back of Thrasher Magazine so bought it on a whim. Instantly blown away. Was this psychotic surf music? Jello's voice was so unique and it's still one of my favorite records ever.
D.R.I. - Dealing With It: I already liked some metal by the time I bought my first punk record. When I heard D.R.I.'s Crossover album, it was cool but I didn't love it. Then I bought Dealing With It and was drawn to how it blended those same influences in a cohesive way that was fast and fun. It captured the suburban teenager experience more than my other favorites.
Black Flag - Who's Got The 10 1/2?: My friend told me to buy this one if I wanted to get into Black Flag. And I really wanted to get to know them because that logo was everywhere. I still recommend this as an intro to the band this day. The record is energetic, well-produced, and features some of their best songs in my opinion. And it showed to me that punk can carry a serious message and still be a lot of fun.
So I'm an old guy now, but instead of buying a Ferrari I purchased a boombox and these 4 albums on CD. And I blast them constantly now. Because no matter what I drive or do for a living or what any of those other social markers try to define me as, I'm still a punk rock kid at heart.
Thanks for reading this.
