Due to a large influx of people not reading the rules and how small of a Mod team we are this is here to serve as the only reminder of the rules. Just to be clear asking or commenting about prices is a permanent ban, the internet is not the place to judge if prices are "fair".

Is this dangerous

I’m trying to inform my landlady that this is not a normal water heater exhaust appearance but I don’t know what I’m looking at.

Thank you everyone. My carbon monoxide detector beeped, I shut off the gas and heater. Landlady was informed

Fiber installation company hits pipes like it’s their job…

After hitting the gas line in front of my house twice in one week—while hand digging, no less—they apparently decided my water line was next.
Best part, without telling me, the laborer digging tried to fix it himself. Made them bring in their licensed plumber… This is what I was left with… is it right?

New build. Inspected and signed off in VA in 2024. Just bought the house and planning a finished space down here and don't want to cover up any crimes.

Questions about how to properly vent water heater

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

We recently bought a house and the only major problems were the ceiling in the picture (according to the previous owners, caused by a repaired water leak) and the heater water not being properly vented. I know how to fix the dry wall, but I can’t figure out how to set up the water heater vent. The inspector told us that a Y connector would be appropriate instead of the 90 degree angle it currently has. The problem is that the water heater seats too close to the furnace vent.

Would it be okay to install the Y connector, then run a metal duct tape straight to the water heater?

Thank you

Well pump.

We need to replace my brother’s well pump. You see how corroded the metal ends are and how close they are to the pump. Any suggestions on how to remove/cut and connect new ends to these?

Sewer smell after shower clog removal

Post image
5 Upvotes

We had a shower clog and a plumber came and removed an old copper P-trap. They installed a PVC P-trap which looks like it is wider than it was before.

We’ve noticed after showering that it smells like sewer. It looks like there is water in the trap but maybe it’s too wide and not sealing? Should I have the plumber who installed come out to inspect?

Do I have an S-Trap?

It looks like an S trap. It drains a little slow. There is a vent pipe about 12 inches to the right in the wall. Do I need to drop it lower or add ADV?

Thank you for the advice!

Foul Smell After Installing New Faucet

Hoping someone with more knowledge than I might be able to help: I recently installed new faucets and sink stoppers throughout our house, and although most seem to be fine, there is a noticeable odor coming from our master bathroom sinks after turning on the water. The smell, which is sulfuric, seems to be coming from the drain and not the faucet itself. Any ideas what the problem could be? Although I did change out the sink’s downspout to the p-trap to accommodate the new installations, nothing else was adjusted. The other weird part is the same faucets and sink stoppers were installed in our other bathrooms and the same issue does not exist.

If it’s of help, I’ve included a couple of pictures of under one of our master bathroom sinks. Thanks!

Constant bad smell coming from the kitchen sink and dishwasher

Hi everyone,
We’re dealing with a really nasty smell coming from our kitchen sink and dishwasher. It’s gotten so bad that the smell spreads throughout our entire kitchen and living room.

I’ve attached photos of our current plumbing setup and the parts we’ve bought to try to fix it.

Current setup:
-We have an IKEA kitchen sink with an existing siphon/water trap.
-Below that, there’s a Y-shaped connector.
-The left side of the Y connects to the kitchen sink drainage.
-The right side connects to the dishwasher’s wastewater hose.
-The bottom of the Y connects to a pipe that goes down and then turns left into the main drainage system.

We’re located in the Netherlands, if that matters for plumbing standards.

Are there any red flags that stand out right away or is everything fine?

Sump pump discharge with backup

Thumbnail

My basement flooded last week with my old sump pump failing. I replaced it with a new pump and a watchdog back up pump. However, I feel like I can hear turbulence much louder than the previous set up and want to minimize noise as much as possible.

I have the new main pump on the left and the back up watch dog on the right line.

Would it be worthwhile to swap the main pump to the right and and watchdog to the left, so the main pump isn’t shooting directly into the wye?

I think that’s the turbulence issue? Or would it not make much difference and there is a different layout that would work here.

First time doing something like this. So any tips or pointers help.

Attached is the old single pump setup vs where I am now.

Completely silent other than the turbulence of water.

Looking for a replacement shower head for this vintage Milwaukee Faucets "Adjusto" adjustable height shower rail/slide bar assembly.
It’s got some threads I’ve never seen before and I’ve had no luck using the internet so I figured I’d go old school and ask the good people of Reddit. Thanks

Blowing out external water lines, air compressor?

Post image
2 Upvotes

We recently moved into a new house and I was given some vague general advice that I should blow air through the lines before winter as there's a sprinkler system and external faucet in the front yard. I have this connection in my basement but I'm not familiar with this process, I would assume I have to do some combination of opening/closing valves but not understanding how the air will pass through if they are closed, unless there's another valve I'm not seeing I don't get what closing any of these would even do?

Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Is this possibly a leak?

Hey guys so I moved into this apartment recently and had never heard this sound until 2 days ago. Coincidentally my upstairs neighbor has installed his washing machine but told me he didn’t use it yet. I also installed a cheap led light a week ago and heard nothing. The sound comes on at random times during the day and is not constant. I can’t tell if it’s electricity related to the light or if it’s something to do with pipes or a potential leak. Anyone have an idea

Pressure Valve?

Thumbnail

I have a pressure issue, if the washer machine is filling up, the pressure in the shower reduces to almost a trickle. Same if someone is washing dishes. We had called a plumber at one point, he asked me to borrow a screwdriver and he loosened or tightened the screw on the pressure reducing valve.

Our home is 25+ years old, I figure the rubber in the valve is perished. I see screws on the head of the valve, can I simply rebuild it? Or do I have to call a plumber out to replace the whole thing?

Double pressure regulator in sprinkler line?

Post image
• Upvotes

I just fixed a leak in my main line, and while digging, I found two pressure regulators on the sprinkler line. One is above the ground, and one is underground. Do you see any reason for that? Do you think I could remove the underground regulator to keep a straight line and just use the one above ground? The underground one is quite rusted, and I am afraid it will break down soon. If it is not needed, I'd remove it.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this!

Need to attach the threaded portion of my shower pan drain body to a pvc elbow

Post image
• Upvotes

This is for my camper van, but i think the concept still applies. Let me know if there's somewhere else should post this or if there's any formatting issues! The picture is just one i had taken for the measurement, i added it so that you all can get an idea of what im talking about, let me know if theres any other photos or information that would be helpful!

I got a shower pan for my van that mounts flush to the floor. Its drain sticks out under the metal floor of the van, right above the grey tank, which means I need this to be as low profile as possible. So I can't just use the tailpiece that was included with the drain and instead have to attach the threaded portion directly to pvc.

The drain is 1 1/4" (measures at 1.6" OD and about 11 threads per inch, if that helps) and as far as I can tell has the straight NPSM threads. So my question, what fitting do I need to get this attached to an elbow so that I can attach my hepvo p-trap? Or would something like a ferco work well enough for this application? Thanks a lot for any help or suggestions!

I am in need to shutoff the water supply for my dishwasher because the inlet valve is leaking.

I turned this valve almost 180 degrees and can't move it anymore but it still seems like the water is going to dishwasher as its keep dripping. What am I missing?

Plus what is this compond on the other valve?

Any help will be appreciated

Washer always smells when running

Post image
• Upvotes

My washer always smells when running. It does not smell when not in use. We recently ran a very long drain snake down and didn't come up with anything. It's a first floor washer and connects to this standing pipe on the wall. I don't see any filter thing on the washer to clean out, so I have to imagine it's something with the plumbing? I thought maybe water is getting stuck in the hose, but then it should get flushed out pretty quickly and not smell so bad and so long.

How to maintain this mess?

Post image

Hello Fam,

Despair is soakin in that sink!.. Don't know if foul is the appropriate adjective but I cannot stand in that kitchen for long. Green Gobbler enzyme Drain cleaner is in my Amazon basket right now, but what should I think of? Got in here like 3 weeks ago thinking the landlord will genuinely fix a bunch of things but ..no.. it's not happening and I have to figure out myself.

And one of the pipe even keeps water in, you have to move it when it is water heavy so it drains 😩

Heeeeeeelp!
