Goodbye, Mamu. You came into my life as Stephen, but you will forever be my Mamu. ❤️🐾
Born: 7 June 2009
Left me: 12 October 2026, at 3:45 PM
His real name was Stephen. But I lovingly called him Mamu, inspired by the song from the Bollywood movie Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.
There wasn't even a character named Mamu in the movie. It was the song that caught on, and somehow, without anyone planning it, the nickname stuck. Slowly, everyone forgot to call him Stephen. His real name became something only his official records remembered. To us, he was Mamu.
And Mamu he remained until his last day.
He was my Indian Spitz, my companion for more than 17 years, and a part of my life that I can never replace. From 7 June 2009 to 12 October 2026, he lived through different phases of my life, and through all those years, he was simply there—being my Mamu.
As he grew older, his health began to deteriorate. There were years of constipation, and later came kidney and liver problems, heart issues, seizures, shivering, vomiting, weakness, and a gradual loss of appetite. His final days were especially difficult. I spent so much time worrying about his reports, medicines, food, and every change in his behaviour. I kept looking for answers because I wanted to understand what was happening to him and what I could do to help.
There were vet visits, blood tests, medicines, sleepless nights, and moments when even the smallest improvement gave me hope. I tried to make him comfortable in every way I could.
In his final days, his blood tests showed severe anemia and serious kidney dysfunction. He developed a very high fever and struggled to breathe. Two vets advised us to consider putting him to sleep. I asked for one more day because I wasn't ready to let go. I wanted to be sure I had done everything I could for him.
I even brought an oxygen concentrator home, hoping it would help him breathe more comfortably. But his body was very weak, and the oxygen wasn't helping as I had hoped.
On 12 October 2026, at 3:45 PM, my Mamu left me forever.
I still find it difficult to accept that he is gone. I keep going back over those final hours, wondering whether I could have done anything differently. I know he was very ill, but when you love an animal this much, the mind keeps searching for another possibility, another answer, another chance.
What hurts is that the world may see him as just a dog who lived a long life. But to me, he was never just a dog. He was Stephen on paper, Mamu in my heart, and family in every way that mattered.
A name that began as a playful nickname became the name everyone used. And now, when I think of him, I don't think of a medical report or a list of illnesses. I think of Mamu. My Mamu.
I wish I could have had more time. I wish I could have spared him those difficult final days. Most of all, I wish I could call out “Mamu” one more time and have him here with me.
Thank you for the 17 years of memories, my boy. Thank you for being part of my life from 2009 to 2026. You may no longer be beside me, but the name I gave you out of love will always belong to you.
Goodbye, Stephen. Goodbye, Mamu.
You were loved before the world knew you as Mamu, and you will be loved long after this world can no longer see you.
Rest peacefully, my boy. You will always be mine. 🌈🐾❤️
