How to stay busy

I have an office job I’m the office manager.
But howwwww do people stay busy all day.
Yeah tasks come up but I can finish most of them in 30 minutes. When I’m working at a quick pace I can finish my tasks for the day by 9:30. And dragging them out just feels painful.
How are people with office jobs staying busy all day or is it just pretending????
How do I better pretend to be busy all day long!!

How do I make myself more invisible at work

I (22 F) have recently joined my first job. It's been about a week and I've noticed that every time I enter an elevator or cross someone in a hall they stare at me like I'm some freak alien.

I don't think I dress too odd (usually regular shirts or sweaters, maybe jeans but people in my office tend to wear that). My hair isn't an unnatural color and I tend to put on natural makeup other than eyeliner. I think the only thing odd about me is my tattoo but there are a couple other people with tattoos as well.

I'm not very outspoken and I keep to myself at work. There's multiple new hires so, at this point, everyone should be used to it by now. I do not understand why I feel like a gorilla in a zoo at my office.

Is there anything I can do to make myself blend in a little more?

Do you and your coworkers disagree about the office temperature? 🌡️

We're a group of engineering students researching temperature comfort in office environments.

We're curious about a few things:

  1. Do you often feel too hot or too cold at work?

  2. Do your coworkers have different temperature preferences?

  3. How does your workplace handle these differences?

  4. Have you found any solutions that actually work?

We're particularly interested in whether this is a common issue and how workplaces deal with it.

Any experiences or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i dont love my job.. i like my job yes, and iam good at it. But its a job and its there to pay the bills. if i could, i would stop working full time or alltogether. But iam stuck here for the foreseeable future. I tried to make the best of it:
- i overachieved

- i asked for courses to get ahead

and everytime i get the same answers.. first its a "yeah thats a good idea, lets talk about it after my vacation" then.. "hmm sorry but i dont see if that would be helpfull for you or the company"

iam done!

since this monday i show up for work 5 min early as always and i still do my work to the best of my abilities.

but at 5 sharp iam out the door and iam not responding to any whatsapp or email after work.

Anyone else completely lose track of time and basic needs while working?

I'm an office worker and I spend most of my day dealing with documents, reports, emails, and random work stuff. I'll sit down for hours and get so locked in that I completely forget to drink water or even stand up and move around for a few minutes.

Then when I finally finish whatever I was working on, I realize my whole body feels wrecked and I'm exhausted by the time I leave. The weird part is I don't notice any of it while I'm actually focused on the work.

I've tried setting phone alarms or using my smartwatch to remind me, but a) I don't want to disturb the people around me, b) it's annoying to set up every time, and c) the reminders only help so much anyway. I always end up thinking "I'll just finish this one thing and then take a break."

Does anyone else struggle with this? Any tips or methods that actually work for you?

How to deal with equipment that sucks?

I recently transferred to a position that pays very well, is engaging, and has a great schedule. I’m excited!

But my equipment sucks. My desk is this miniature fabric monstrosity from literally Temu. It’s so unstable my monitor rocks back and forth when I type. It rattles against the wall all day. I can’t pull my chair up to it so I’m bent over typing all day. I slam my knee off it every time I forget how low it is and bang my elbow off the side. It has no storage. I can’t use my standing desk riser which is a huge bummer. I have had it for years and used to use it daily. It will topple over on this stupid thing. It’s so narrow I can’t even use my own keyboard. They just bought this desk (for like $30) just for me so I’m stuck with it. The director thinks it looks nice. It does look nice. It’s just unusable.

Anyone else have issues with unusable office equipment? I am sore, I am crabby, all the papers they give me are in a box that I put my feet in. This is a desk based position and one of the most senior positions in the program. I don’t understand why everyone else has nice, real desks and mine is made out of mostly plastic tubes and cloth.

I’ve thought about putting a big ugly piece of plywood on it so I can extend it past my knees and annoy the director with the aesthetic but I don’t think the frame is sturdy enough to hold that and fear it will make the bouncing monitor and everything falling off worse

Office Awareness

Yung newbie pa lang ako sa company siyempre tamang observe muna super lala ng toxicity especially sa mga millennials mo kasama. As Gen Z na talaga need mo mag adjust at intindihin isip nila in my own experience doon ko na pansin na iba pala talaga makisama mga gen Z sa millennials and boomers kasi they are opened pagdating sa opinion talaga nag re-react most of GenZ direct to the point unlike millennials and other gen ayaw nila ng ganun disrespectful raw. Mas mainam ng malaman kaysa sa iba mo pa malalaman.

I timed every step of this chair build; the backrest took 18 minutes

I timed the whole build because I wanted to see where the 55 minutes were actually going.

Unboxing and checking parts: 8 minutes Attaching the base and seat mechanism: 9 minutes Lining up and starting the armrest bolts: 14 minutes Aligning and attaching the backrest: 18 minutes Final tightening and adjustments: 6 minutes

The main slowdown was the right side of the backrest bracket. There was barely any play in the holes, so tightening one bolt too early pulled the other side out of line. Starting all four bolts loosely fixed it, but that one step still took longer than anything else.

How do you take meeting notes when you're also supposed to be running the meeting?

This has become one of those work problems where every solution seems to create another problem.

If I take detailed notes, Im not paying enough attention to the conversation... if I only write down decisions and action items, someone inevitably asks for the context behind them later. And if I'm the one presenting or keeping the discussion on track, forget it. My notes are basically useless.

Ive been looking into Al note takers, but most of what comes up seems designed around online meetings, while a lot of the conversations I care about happen around an actual table.

For people dealing with a ridiculous number of meetings every week, what setup has actually worked for you?

I'm wondering if a physical Al recorder makes more sense than running something on a laptop or phone, especially when what I really need afterward is decisions, owners, deadlines, and enough of a transcript to check what was actually said.

Obviously this assumes everyone knows they're being recorded and is okay with it.

I feel unprofessional

I’m new in my office which is my first cooperate job. This week, there was a food party, so everyone was there. I accidentally share my experience about racism at my previous work. My team lead call me and discuss one on one chatting for my concern, mostly I listened. I feel embarrassed and unprofessional about sharing my experiences.

How do I come over this feeling

Not sure this is weird but…

I’m a female leader. New guy joins my team 3 weeks ago but he still offers his hand out for me to shake EVERY time he greets me in the office. First day is understandable, but it’s now week 3 and we’re on the 10th handshake. I do not see him doing this with other male colleagues or other senior folks like his (male) boss (who reports to me). I get weird vibes but maybe he’s just being a gentleman. He’s not local but I don’t think this is cultural. Am I being too hard ass?

Body Odor

I work in an office, obviously. One of my colleagues frequently has bad BO. I’ve been able to smell where he’s been at times. It’s not every day, but it seems like he showers 2x per week and the days before his next shower are the worst.
I’m pretty sure he’s on the spectrum, just by observing him. We have not spoken to each other a single time. He looks away when passing in the corridor, though I try to take alternate routes when I see him.
I’ve spoken to HR about it and was told “this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this.” Allegedly they did talk to him and I think it got better for a couple weeks but now it’s back.
Also, I’m moving offices and now will be next door to someone with whom this guy frequently converses. I know the smell can and will enter my office.
I want to either leave him an anonymous note or talk to HR again or both. Autism is no excuse for making everyone around you suffer.
What would you do? And would you be rude on the note, since polite conversations with HR apparently didn’t get the message across?

How do you create more work-life balance when you wfh?

I love the convenience of working from home, but I find it really difficult to mentally disconnect from work at the end of the day.

My home office is upstairs, and sometimes I actually have to close the door because I don’t even want to see my workspace outside of working hours.
It’s like I never fully feel away from work, even when I’m off the clock.

Does anyone else struggle with this? What routines or boundaries have helped you separate your work life from your personal life?

Your office people on socials

Do you guys add your work colleagues on social media, especially managers and higher-ups?

Personally, I prefer keeping work and personal life separate. Imagine posting a picture and seeing your manager in the comments giving you life advice like they're your parent. HELLO? My comments section is not a workplace meeting. I just want to post in peace.

I'm okay with adding work colleagues if we're genuinely cool with each other, but higher-ups? I'm a little hesitant. I don't want everyone at work having access to my personal life. And honestly, if someone makes me uncomfortable, I'll just mute them. Simple. No drama, no confrontation.

Let me just listen to the spectrum of experiences of you all. LES GOO!

Earphones for the office

Hi all,

Not a fan of the overhead headphones for my office job, I prefer earphones.

The earphones I currently have pick up a lot of noise when I’m in teams calls.

Does anyone have any suggestions for earphones which are suitable for MS teams/zoom calls for a noisy office.

Thanks

Need some advice

I don't know whether I am right or wrong.....please help me.

Okay so it was our CEO's birthday on 10th Oct. Coincidentally there was a discussion in the office 2 days ago as to who's birthday is it next.....we must try out a new cake this time. I was not present during this discussion ( it was discussed during lunch time and I had gone out for lunch).

When I came back I got to know that we are celebrating our CEO'S birthday that very day and we need to contribute and plan for the same. And it was planned that we will buy the usual half kg cake (which we usually buy when it is one of our colleagues birthdays).

I wanted to buy a bigger cake (1 kg cake and even the head count has increased).

So I said that lets buy a bigger cake this time and not the usual one and asked everyone to contribute accordingly ( that would require extra money) and announced the final amount.

No one uttered one single word.

Me and one of my colleague (who is also my best friend) went out and bought the cake.

Everyone enjoyed.....one of them even mentioned that " the cake was amazing ".

But something went off there.......other colleague did not even touch the cake "he said I don't want to eat"

I don't know what went wrong here? And from the next day onwards no one is talking to us (me and my best friend).

If they did not want to buy that cake they should have mentioned earlier right?

It is not that I care much who thinks what.....but why this cold war then?

And I feel problems should be discussed not kept hidden......
