It was actually Dawn’s body that Tilikum would not release during the show. This is the body that required multiple tank changes to get Tilikum to release Dawn’s body.
Also Dawn was pulled in by her shoulder/arm. Seaworld tried to say it was her ponytail because she did not normally wear her hair that way and therefore Tilikum was confused.
He actually removed her arm from her body during the time he had her, showing that she was indeed pulled in by her upper arm/shoulder.
The method of retrieval of Daniel Dukes body is unknown to my knowledge.
By 2010, Tilikum was not doing any shows with trainers in the water due to his first kill in 1991. All of the shows he was in, had trainers on platforms at all times.
I’m not defending Sea world, I’m just correcting the history on Tilikum’s story. Correct facts matter.
If you are interested in this topic, I suggest the book Beneath the Surface by John Hargrove and Howard Chua-Eoan.

Yeah, most of this ladies story is wrong.... or well inaccurate at least

Worked in zoological back in 2005 (as an educator) and even back then we were told, for insurance reasons, that no one was ever allowed in a pool with Tilicum.

I'm English, lots of foreign words sound ridiculous to English speakers because they sound like funny English words. If you haven't worked that out yet you're either too young to be using a smartphone by yourself or hugely ignorant.

No smart animal should be kept in captivity. No human should be invading an orca’s territory unless they’re prepared to deal with the consequences.

Okay, so none of you geniuses care to define the word 'smart' in the context of intelligence across species? Got it, carry on.
1
u/antiquetulip 2d ago
Orcas speak different languages and have many different sub cultures. They also have more complex brains than human beings do.
2
u/nickyler 1d ago
You know how we know this? Because we caught a few of the fuckers and studied them. You know who has never studied human brains? Orcas.
0
u/mrfoodmehng 1d ago
Capturing cetaceans and studying them is actually not how we know this. Not even remotely close, in fact.

u/MyNonThrowaway 2d ago
Keeping intelligent creatures like this in a tank is tantamount to slavery.
Fuck sea world.
9
u/Paxon_Goat 2d ago
Sea world has not captured and brought a wild orcas to their park since the 1980s.
They ended the orcas breeding program.
Russia is still actively capturing wild orcas to sell to marine parks. (They made it illegal a few years ago but it is most likely still happening.)
Parks in China are still breeding orcas in captivity.
Parks in Japan still have people in the water with orcas during the shows. They also have said they would want to restart their orcas breeding program.
Yeah Sea World was horrific and terrible. They did some of the worst shit imaginable 50 years ago.
But parks in asia are still doing it to this day. Right now.
So where is the anger against them?

u/Ephemeral_Orchid 2d ago
Well, it's kind of obvious when wild orcas (for whatever reason) have never attacked humans... it's like forcing a wolf to live in tiny crate, or a lion on a short chain and drugged so people can take photos with it.

It felt like a cultural phenomenon when it first hit streaming. Everyone saw it and talked about it round the water cooler. It was so extremely well done and very upsetting. I’m suprised to see the information being presented as something people don’t know about.
5
u/bullettenboss 2d ago
Orcas are just huge dolphins. That's why they play with sailboats as well. You can't keep them from playing even in solitary confinement.
2
u/antiquetulip 2d ago
Orcas know how to play without hurting people. This was deliberate. Tilikum had already killed once before.

Why do we get so many posts about fish tanks in the Ocean sub? This isn’t why I joined this sub. I just want to see pretty pics of the ocean.
Is there a better sub for someone like me?

u/RestlessChickens 2d ago edited 2d ago
[r/HeavySeas](r/HeavySeas) is exactly that, which may not help with calmness but does showcase the beauty and power of the ocean.
r/ thalassiphobia (that's surely spelled wrong, I'll try to update)is more eclectic but generally doesn't include tanks or captivityEdit: [r/thalassophobia](r/thalassophobia)

u/demystake 2d ago
Lol, comment section under literally ever post is so miserable on heavyseas.

If you want to see the ocean maybe you should care about taking care of it and not treating it and its life like trash?
7
u/anonymousdlm 2d ago
What?
I need calmness. The mistreatment of animals makes me anything but calm. Holding animals in tanks is abhorrent. It should be outlawed.
But for my physical and mental health, I need calmness. Sorry if that upset you. Try to remember there are people with different circumstances than your own.

u/atomic_chippie 2d ago
Im with you, tired of photos of dead whales and animals in tanks...just want to learn about the ocean thru interesting articles and beautiful photos.

"raising awareness" from an inaccurate clip about something. That happened 20 years ago? gtfoh.

It's a really minor point, but it's pronounced Till-i-cum, not Till-ee-cum. It's a Chinook word from the North Pacific.
5
u/bingMsbangMs 2d ago
Can we vote to rename the whale?

u/ashemcee 2d ago
It’s a Chinook word from PNW native tribes. It means Family. Also, this woman is pronouncing it wrong.

He’s named fine. This person is either an idiot or intentionally mispronouncing it.
Tilikum.
She’s doing the equivalent of what I did when I first read the word epitome. It’s not epi-tome. It’s definitely not Til-he-kum.

I remember seeing tilikum when i was like, idk 10. I had no idea he’d killed people. But i vividly remember going up to his tank at night and putting my face to the glass to try to see him again. I was the only person around looking in the tank. He emerged from the pitch black water and swam right past the glass super slowly. It scared the shit outta me. Like it was genuinely terrifying.
This part i could have just been imaging but it felt like he was looking at me.
2
u/Icy_Sea_4440 1d ago
He probably was looking at you. Orca are extremely sociable, intelligent, curious creatures. He was probably checking you out exactly like you were checking him out
1
u/BLACKdrew 6h ago
Well i hope my reaction got a kick outta the old boy Cuz I’m sure as hell never gonna forget it.
I actually had to watch blackfish like 3 times through during college so i have extensive love for orcas. They deserve all the love.

"Becoming" aggressive? They're already aggressive, that they're domesticated or tame or whatever is an illusion.

u/TedMich23 1d ago
Lets not forget SeaWorld killed between 6 and "dozens" of Orcas trying the capture their first "Shamu".
1
u/ShoddyEntrance8525 20h ago
You already know they got footage of him jumping in. So you just know they also got the full raw video of what happened next… but they’ll never drop it for public viewing.
Same exact thing with MGM with Roy Horn from Siegfried & Roy. They’ve got the complete stage camera footage of his white tiger Mantacore mauling him, dragging him off stage by the neck, the whole bloody scene. MGM’s been offered millions for that tape over the years and still won’t release it or sell it for public viewing. That shit is locked in the vault forever.

The shows and such are not right. But it's weird to say orcas get aggresive by captivity while they are one of the more agressive creatures of the sea. Even more reason not to do shows with them
Edit: agression isn't necesarrily about anger or bad intensions. It's also about intensity. Like how a desease can be agressive or a substance like acid. If you watch orcas hunt it can get pretty agressive
4
u/kayej17 1d ago
they never attack human in the wild.
1
u/Schorbie 1d ago
I meant how they are to other animals. Like using live pray to teach. Also there is a group of like 50 orcas attacking boats near Portugal and Spain
1
u/Few-Statistician8740 1d ago
Using live prey to teach isn't aggression it's using what they have available to teach their young to hunt and survive

u/Schorbie 1d ago

Believe it or not there was a time in history where there weren’t any documented shark attacks in the US and so people thought they weren’t a threat.
It turns out just most people weren’t surviving the attacks or found. I do think captivity breeds aggression, but I also think there’s the potential of undocumented attacks.
They’re intelligent hunters that kill for fun/sport.

Someone not being factual about Tilikum.
He was an orca kept at Sea World Orlando. He was taken from the wild outside of Iceland. He was horrifically abused by Marineland in Canada. Starved. Kept in a tiny tiny pool in a shed. The two other orcas beat the shit out of him all the time.
Eventually sea world bought him and brought him down to Orlando. At some point a man climbed into the orca tank with him to go skinny dip in the middle of the night. His body was found with bite marks and it appeared he had drowned. It's scandalous because Tilkium removed the man's penis.
Then Tilkium was the infamous whale who grabbed a sea world trainer during a show and killed her by biting her arm and pulling her under the water until she drowned. There's been some debate whether he initially grabbed her pony tail and pulled her in that way but her body did have bite marks.
Afterwards there was a lot of anger that Sea world "kept him in isolation to suffer"
But that orca had serious mental health issues and did not enjoy the company of other orcas. Most likely from his past of getting the shit beat out of him by the two older orcas at Marineland in Canada and he was taken from the wild at a very young age.
Orcas in the wild have an extremely structured social system that is primarily run by an older female whale.
He did seem to enjoy the company of one of his daughters and would hang out with her.
Btw if you care about whales in captivity. Put pressure on Russia to stop trying to capture whales from the wild. And put pressure on China to stop trying to buy wild caught whales and to stop breeding orcas.
Parks in Japan also still do water work where they have trainers in the water with the orcas.

My goodness! I do not want to hear this gore, could you at least put a warning at the beginning of the video so people like me don't have to hear such disturbing content?! Some of us have PTSD and that can severely trigger a traumatic episode of reliving the past depending on what one has been through. I'm glad my trauma was not involving gore. I'll just say I survived near death experiences more than once and even escaped a criminal who nearly killed me once when I was homeless, much more things I've experienced that I'd rather not say, and yes, this kinda triggerd me honestly. So inconsiderate of whatever posted this! Thanks for reminding me of my horrific past jerk!

Shoulda put that animal DOWN
3

Why, for being itself? Its not a dog and it's not like it could get out and run amok

Because it’s obviously psychotic

Again, not psychotic. An apex predator doing what apex predators do.

How does it feel to be a species traitor
2
u/FantasticBike1203 18h ago
"species traitor", brother, an Orca is a wild animal that hunt's seals and flips them multi-story building levels into the air, having this opinion isn't being a traitor, it's common sense.
No different than jumping into a pit of hungry lions.
0
u/tbhmoreadvanced 18h ago
Orcas don’t mangle the seal body then swim around with it on its back for hours, brother
1
u/FantasticBike1203 17h ago
They are known to play with their food/prey, since the Orca knows there aren't any other predators coming to steal that food anytime soon, him doing this isn't really surprising either.
1
u/Few-Statistician8740 16h ago
They are well known to carry their kills around, on their heads for days sometimes.
