Arts, music and tradition: The Stockley Gardens Fall fest returns this weekend

Post image
25 Upvotes

The Stockley Gardens Fall Arts Festival this weekend will transform the verdant Ghent park into a free two-day event featuring more than 115 artists, musicians and food vendors.

The festival includes activities and educational tables for children and artists across various media, including glass, sculpture, photography and painting.

Proceeds from the twice-yearly arts festivals go to Hope House Foundation, the only Virginia organization that provides support for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities exclusively in their homes.

The fall festival runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Saturday's musical lineup includes TA Gatling (rock and soul), Tiara & Andrew (alt folk and pop), Jade Loving (pop and rock) and the Indie rock act Community Witch, which will play at the award party beginning at 5.

Sunday's entertainment includes singers from the Virginia Opera, alt-rockers Mike Gomas Jr. and The LifeHacks, and jazz rock act Big Stupid Circle.

The spring and fall festivals generate $80,000, which is used for medical and dental care, clothing, housing and food assistance.

The aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush is back in the Middle East, supporting the U.S. war against Iran after its first port stop in more than six months at sea.

The Norfolk-based carrier arrived in Phuket, Thailand, on Oct. 4 for a five day port visit. The crew of nearly 5,000 sailors were provided tours and attended a U.S. vs. Thailand soccer match before leaving last Friday. It was the ship’s first port visit since leaving Norfolk on March 31, according to the U.S. State Department.

USS Bush has been in the Middle East supporting the U.S. war against Iran. USS Bush had been out to sea for more than six months without a break.

How Norfolk maintains tens of thousands of graves at its historic cemeteries

Post image
27 Upvotes

Norfolk’s Bureau of Cemeteries oversees more than 182,000 graves spanning eight historic municipal sites, including Elmwood Cemetery.

City ordinance requires municipal crews to mow and trim every two weeks, leaving little time for detailed preservation work beyond basic groundskeeping.

To fill the gap, the city relies on a public-private partnership with the nonprofit Norfolk Society for Cemetery Conservation, which organizes volunteers to clean headstones, remove ivy and repair deteriorating monuments.

Apartment/house around ODU?

Hello everybody, there is a high chance that I will be moving to Norfolk from Philly soon. I might be wrong, but the housing scene seems very bad in Norfolk (at least around ODU ). Not many options, mostly old buildings, and most apartments have really bad reviews. I am looking for a studio or one-bedroom, and my budget is around 1500 at most. Safety, walkability, and having restaurants and grocery shops around the place are my priorities. I also don't want to fight with rats/roaches/mold inside my place. If you have any recommendations, please let me know. My daily commute will be from the apartment to ODU, and I don't really know much about the public transportation in Norfolk, but I would be open to live futher incase there is a reliable public transportation line available to ODU.

Thank you.

Anyone around here know a good landlord-tenant lawyer?

And what’s the cost range? Just signed a nightmare of a lease last week where I had to change it like 3 times because it had a bunch of illegal stuff in there and now that we’ve been there for a week, we’ve had several problems.

7 outlets in the house can’t hold a plug at all, the front door barely works, the dishwasher doesn’t work(not that important in the grand scheme of things), and there’s a roach infestation(thankfully we’ve only seen Americans)

I’ve documented everything and requested everything via email but he only replies in texts to my partner sometimes and has only said he’ll fix it soon

What happened at NNSY? From Waterside, I heard a loud boom or pop then what appeared to be smoke. Then 20 minutes later, 6 firetrucks arrived. Hopefully nobody was harmed.

Norfolk defends Flock as backlash grows, misuse concerns mount nationwide

Norfolk’s city manager defended the city’s use of Flock Safety cameras Tuesday, citing the internal guardrails in place to prevent misuse as dozens of residents packed the City Council chambers to protest the technology’s use.

But the city has no plans to stop using the technology, even as other Virginia cities have cancelled Flock contracts in recent weeks citing concerns.

City Manager Pat Roberts said everyone who accesses the camera data must have a specific reason and must log it. The log, he said, is effectively an auditable digital paper trail. And the Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards is “routinely and actively auditing who’s using the information and to detect any case of misuse,” he said.

Virginia lawmakers passed legislation in 2025 to put guardrails on usage of automated license plate readers, including restricting their use for specific law enforcement purposes, requiring agencies using them to keep audit trails of queries, and to conduct regular internal audits.

“I want to say confidently to City Council that in any scenario where someone would access the data and misuse the data, it will be detected,” Roberts said. “And in any scenario where it is detected that an employee is misusing the data, that employee particularly would face harsh consequences, up to and including termination of employment and potentially criminal charges.”

It was unclear if Norfolk has taken any safeguards beyond what is already required by state law. Roberts did not answer questions about Flock after the meeting.

Norfolk signed a 5-year contract with Flock in 2023. Upwards of 200 Flock cameras are used across the city, including 175 operated by the Norfolk Police Department, 24 by the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority and 17 by Norfolk State University.

The cameras photograph every car that passes by, registering information such as the license plate, vehicle make, body type and color and features such as bike racks, dents and bumper stickers. Law enforcement investigators can then access the information in a database to find out which vehicles passed by the cameras.

Pet food pantry

Any free pet food pantries around without a state ID? I don’t have a Virginia ID as just recently got here, I plan on getting one after I change my name so I don’t have to keep ordering new IDs.
I have 3 cats and can usually afford everything but one cat has put us in crazy debt immediately after adopting and we’re just struggling big time this paycheck specifically. 2 of them can eat dry food but one can only eat wet pate (really bad dental issues/surgery) and litter. All utd on shots and neutered.
*Please no “don’t have a pet if you can’t afford”, this is a very rare first time thing and one time thing.

Anti-Flock camera group rallies to push Norfolk to cancel contract

Demonstrators rallied outside Norfolk City Hall on Tuesday, demanding that city leaders cancel the city's contract with Flock Safety and remove all 172 automated license plate readers.

Organizers from the DeFlock Norfolk Coalition cited widespread privacy concerns — the same concerns that have driven places like Richmond and Henrico County to drop the technology in recent weeks.

Norfolk officials defended the system, with Commonwealth's Attorney Ramin Fatehi calling the cameras a vital tool for solving violent crime.

Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 29

Good evening,

This past Saturday night / Sunday morning, just past midnight on 11 OCT 2026, police received a call regarding a man with a dangerous gunshot wound at 855 E. Little Creek Rd. Police arrived and found Mehki M. Teachey, 25 years old, dead on the scene.

The red square for this incident is the upper/northern of the two red squares near the middle of the map.

https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/man-dead-after-shooting-on-e-little-creek-rd-in-norfolk/

https://www.pilotonline.com/2026/10/11/man-killed-in-norfolk-shooting-on-east-little-creek-road/

A few observations:

- This was the second murder in Norfolk in October and the 29th overall in Norfolk for 2026.

- The average age of those killed in October is 20.5 years old. The average age for the year is currently at 32.32 years old.

- Of those 29 people killed in 2026, so far five have been women and the other 24 have been identified by local news and gov't as men. I believe my calculator puts that as 83% men or so. This is moving towards an overrepresentation of men compared to data for the last few years, but only by so much.

- I work on this project not to scare people off or wallow in misery, but to give us hard data about serious crime.

Be safe, make good decisions!

housing Larchmont Apartments

I am having a family member move to Norfolk who needs a little cheaper of a place to rent. Larchmont Apartments seems like a great fit for him based on base rent. I’m aware it’s not the top of the line spot but it’ll be a good starter place for him. For anyone who is currently or in the past rented from them, what extra fees did you have to pay on top of the base rent? Did it raise your rent by a lot?

Virginia Pilot cost is crazy

I get the online only version and noticed I was being charged 16.99 a week for access. This is more than the WSJ+ Premier Digital Bundle which is one of its most expensive options. Needless to say, I will be doing without the Virginia Pilot. If anything happens in Norfolk, please notify me.
