News Virginia Beach seeks option to use 1% sales tax hike for flood projects, not just schools

Voters in dozens of Virginia localities will decide this year whether to approve a 1% sales tax hike with the funds going toward local school construction and renovation projects.

Virginia Beach city leaders have other ideas about how the money could be spent. The city plans to lobby state lawmakers to expand the use of those funds generated by the tax to include flood protection and coastal storm risk management infrastructure in the wake of soaring costs. It would require a state budget amendment and is among the requests included in the city’s 2027 draft legislative agenda.

City Manager Patrick Duhaney said Virginia Beach is not alone in the struggle to pay for projects that protect homes and businesses from flooding and rising sea levels, and he believes other Hampton Roads cities will join in support of expanding the tax use, if voters approve it. Virginia Beach is not among the cities where the 1% sales tax is on the ballot this year.

“We anticipate talking to them (other localities) to see if they’d be willing to go together as maybe the five or seven cities in the region,” Duhaney said at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

In the coming years, the city will be responsible 35% of the cost of any projects approved as part of a coastal storm risk management project with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District.

Virginia Beach has also been building flood protection projects including tide gates and pump stations, and more work is planned. The total cost has ballooned to $1.5 billion.

Meanwhile, one state funding source Hampton Roads localities have tapped for flood protection projects may have less money to go around. Half of the proceeds collected through Virginia’s Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative auctions were previously dedicated to the state’s Community Flood Preparedness Fund. But state lawmakers adjusted the allocations this year to dedicate 45% to a rebate for consumers from public utilities. The remaining 55% will be split between the flood resiliency and low income funds.

A public hearing on the city’s proposed legislative agenda will be held Tuesday. The City Council will vote on the final draft on Nov. 10. Legislative agenda items require a two-thirds majority vote for approval.

Need Advice Old Jewelry Recs

I'm moving soon so I'm downsizing and getting rid of stuff I don't need/want anymore. Among other things, I have some old gold jewelry that belonged to my Mom. Does anyone have suggestions for jewelry stores or other places to bring the jewelry to sell? I'm not really interested in pawn shops.

I also have a bunch of costume jewelry that is not gold. I assume it's best to just donate or trash that, but I am open to suggestions for places that accept it.

**The filters are a beast. I am NOT looking to sell anything on Reddit.**

Discussion Adding another post to the often discussed local pizza options

I grew up going to Toni’s on Holland and it was my favorite pizza ever. Anyone who used to go prior to about 15 years ago can tell you there has been a difference ever since the old owner stepped away. It just recently came to my attention that his style of pizza actually has a name! Greek pizza, or American style pizza made in the style of Greek immigrants. I think I recall him being Greek but I had no idea this was an entire genre of pizza from the northeast. My mind was blown but all the characteristics stand out: the crispy crust/soft bottom combo, the “Pizza house” title on the original menu, the beyond excellent Greek salads that were served as sides, etc. My question for anyone familiar with what I am talking about is aside from the old owner exiting retirement to make pies again, is there anywhere else locally that makes and serves this kind of pizza? I’ll even settle for taking a day trip out of Hampton Roads to give it a try (but I’d prefer for it to be closer of course). I just need it in my life again lol

Lori Golding Zontini grew up in Norfolk not always knowing whether there would be food on the table. Today, she runs three farmers markets in Norfolk and Virginia Beach and leads an annual food drive that collected 3,700 pounds of food this year. As a child, her family received help from Jewish Family Services. Now she’s helping other families facing hunger.

History The Cavalier Hotel changing “The Pocahontas Room” to “Becca Restaurant & Garden” was wild

I know it was years ago at this point, but I still can’t believe they did that when they renovated.

For some historical background, the English settlers in Jamestown KIDNAPPED Pocahontas to gain leverage over her father (Chief Powhatan). While they had her in captivity, they converted her to Christianity, baptized her, renamed her Rebecca, married her to John Rolfe, and then she had a child with him, was taken to England to show off to the elites, and then she died around 20 or 21 years of age—in England. And this is all based on what the English (who certainly had an agenda of promoting cultural superiority) wrote.

There’s also some disputed evidence that she may have already had an American Indian husband and child.

The Cavalier developers said they renamed the restaurant Becca when they redid the hotel as a tribute to The Pocahontas Room in the hotel pre-renovation, but that’s a wild choice given that she was named “Rebecca” only because the English kidnapped her and deliberately sanitized her of her culture. That’s honestly worse than if they just named it something else entirely.

Edit: for all we know, she could’ve been the victim of what’s essentially sex trafficking… all we have is the records of the English to know anything

Need Advice Pet food pantry

Any free pet food pantries around without a state ID? I don’t have a Virginia ID as just recently got here, I plan on getting one after I change my name so I don’t have to keep ordering new IDs.
I have 3 cats and can usually afford everything but one cat has put us in crazy debt immediately after adopting and we’re just struggling big time this paycheck specifically. 2 of them can eat dry food but one can only eat wet pate (really bad dental issues/surgery) and litter. All utd on shots and neutered.
\*Please no “don’t have a pet if you can’t afford”, this is a very rare first time thing and one time thing.

Need Advice Is anyone looking for a roommate?

I'm currently a student at ATI and i don't have a car. Im being kicked out of my house by the end of this year.
Since i dont have a vehicle i need to find somewhere to live near one of the following bus stops: Bus 20, 22, 25, and 27, also light rail line 800.
I would probably be able to pay around $150/m but that is negotiable.

Need Advice Middle schools (Salem, Lynnhaven, etc.)

I would love input on the area schools, especially middle schools.

We’re moving our family to VB very soon and actively house hunting. We’ve heard wonderful things about Kings Grant and have some family and friends that live in Salem. Between those two areas, we keep getting somewhat conflicting info on school quality. Most people we know in the area seem to find schools in Kings Grant “better”…however all the online ranking sites (I’ve used like 3-4 different ones) don’t always reflect that. Specifically Lynnhaven Middle. Some sites give it decent ranking, others not so great. Salem Middle seems to have consistently good rankings, but people in VB we know have said it’s historically not one of the best schools. It’s all making us second guess houses we like in each of those areas.

For additional context: we value quality teachers, safety, community and diversity. Don’t really care whether the school is fancy or new, historic, prestigious, etc.

The Z Creativity Honors recognizes people in nontraditional performance fields, such as medicine, government and education, who make an impact in the arts community.

Liana Courts is one of this year's honorees. She organized students to put on a fashion show at the Chrysler Museum of Art, which has become one of the museum's biggest nights of the year.

The ceremony returns to Zeiders American Dream Theater in Virginia Beach to celebrate the creative problem-solvers across industries in Hampton Roads.

Need Advice The Dome (300s seating vs. GA)

Going to Brand New show this Thursday. Have tickets in 4th row of section 301. How is the view and the sound up there? Can I go down to GA section and watch if I don’t like my seats? Or are workers at all sections to enforce staying where your ticket has you? Some places use wristbands for GA or Mezzanine. I’m thinking I’ll wanna go down to GA at some point though if I can.

Need Advice Who’s heard of Mike and Blake’s decks, Fences, and Sheds?

Looking to get my deck repaired and have had a few companies come out to provide estimates. Their quote was roughly $10k cheaper than all the other companies, and it was to do more work (a complete rebuild).

Here is my biggest hang up. The guy that came out to provide the estimate and who I assume would be the contractor to do the work, has been arrested for failing to perform construction or home improvements after taking an advance payment (twice). I found this info just do a quick google search of the his name in an attempt to find any past jobs or reviews that might have mentioned his work. After finding this out It, his estimate almost feels to good to be true.

Not holding anything against him and I’d be more than happy to hire him. I just don’t want to spend 30k to have poor quality work done or even worse, it doesn’t get completed at all. I am just trying to get honest feedback/ reviews from anyone who’s had experience with them.

Discussion How do you keep salt air and wind from eating your windows and siding out here?

We moved to the Great Neck area two years ago and the ocean side of the house is aging in fast forward. Window seals are hazing, the siding fasteners are streaking rust, and the trim paint chalks off within a year. Our old house inland never did any of this. People who've owned near the water for a while, what actually holds up?
