Came all the way to Italy to confirm New Haven pizza is the best in the world. It is.

Italian pizza is still really great though. I prefer Rome style to Naples, it’s got a much better crust. But even the worst pizza I’ve had here is better than almost anything I’ve had outside the NYC metro (and better than plenty of local spots) so it’s hard to go wrong.

A narrow nit about the new Whitney Ave traffic pattern

I've driven this area regularly for over 15 years. Now that the lines are painted some of these changes are great, but going from 4 lanes to 2 + a turning lane has some natural pain points. One very particular one I encounter is between Armory and Davis in Hamden [0]. They took away two lanes in each direction. Instead adding a turning lane on Blake and one into Hamden hall. The Blake one is fine, albeit not a high traffic turn. Hamden hall is only needed two times a day and ONLY when school is in session--not during high traffic times necessarily either.

Going South at the intersection of Armory and Whitney it is now one lane. They should add a turning lane, as Armory (which now has 5 speed humps in less than a 1/2 mile) is a high traffic road. Additionally, they should add a turning lane going north onto Davis. I have been backed up all the way to Armory because of people waiting to turn onto Davis.

Additionally, why did they stop the protected bike lane? there is enough room for it to continue through this area. There is a trail that runs along the river right off of Davis. It would be nice for bikes to have an easy connection to it. After that the bike lane has room to resume after whitneyvile commons/tredwell street. Where the former lake road terminates. This could increase bike traffic from spring glenn. I know the canal trail through newhallvile is not everyone's favorite for some reason.

Besides the more general "It Stinks" has anyone else encountered any pain points now that the lines have been painted?

Olive & Wooster (O&W): Still a "No"

UPDATE:

  1. For clarity: This post is about owners who impose unrealistic budget cuts and arrogantly believe they aren't accountable to residents—not the on-site team, who can only do so much, and certainly not coffee. The recent assault at The Whit, along with O&W's dismal sanitation and maintenance history, underscores the seriousness of this accountability failure.
  2. Case in point: I learned today that our porter works only 4 days a week. This means that from Friday at 5:00 PM to Tuesday at 8:00 AM, a 300+ unit building operates without a porter. If you think that's acceptable, feel free to leave the owners a 5-star Google review.

Note: To save a few people the trouble of typing "just move out"—my lease runs through December 2027. Moving out sounds good, but breaking a lease is impractical and costly.

I hesitated to send this post because most people don't want to hear about things they can't change. But after so many neighbors, friends, and readers asked how things are really going at O&W-87 Union Street, I decided to share an update for anyone considering renting here.

The short answer: I would not rent here because the owners don't run O&W properly. Their decision to ignore our complaints and keep leasing fully staffed while under-resourcing O&W operations shows an arrogant business mindset that's become all too common.

We're all exhausted by companies that take your money, strip away basic service, and then make you feel like the bad guy just for expecting what you paid for. These big real estate outfits rely on deep pockets, legal loopholes, and political influence to operate under the radar and avoid answering to ordinary residents.

Take the building's coffee setup as a small example. When I moved in, coffee was unlimited—even if the machine was often broken or out of supplies. The owners eventually scrapped that, promising a shiny "new and improved" program. The catch? They capped residents at 30 cups a month, but the machine still runs out of beans and jams with a full waste bin just like before. They spent money on a new machine to cut their own costs and labor, not to help us.

When it goes down during prime morning hours (6 to 9 AM), and we ask for a quick 20-second text update once it's working again so people don't make wasted trips down to the lobby, the owners' agent flat-out refused. He claimed texting us would "bombard" residents and put an "undue burden" on the office. But two days later, the owners' agent sent two email announcements: the first about an elevator outage, and the second about service being restored—in a building with two other working elevators.

It’s not really about the coffee; it's the attitude. When the owners treat basic courtesy like an inconvenience, that same neglect trickles down to their agents and eventually to the stuff that actually matters:

• Sanitation: On weekends, the owners allocate only 9 porter hours (Sunday: 8 AM - 5 PM) to handle trash room duties for a 300+ unit building, covering 87 total hours from 5 PM Thursday to 8 AM Monday. This leaves rotting waste on our trash room floors for over 42 hours, timed to coincide with city inspection hours. When rodents show up, it's not bad luck—it's what happens when corners are cut. The evidence has been submitted to local officials, including Mayor Justin Elicker, LCI Director Liam Brennan, and Alder Carmen Rodriguez, and is updated weekly.

• Security: Look at recent local headlines, such as the unfortunate violent attack at the nearby Whit garage, covered by the New Haven Independent. When the garage gate and the HVAC systems for the lobby, the community room, and the gym have been broken for 9 months, as they have been at O&W, you have to wonder what happens when an actual emergency hits.

Big developers rely on the fact that short-term renters don't complain; long-term renters get tired, stay quiet, and eventually move away. But they can't hide from the clear evidence in the gallery above.

If you're touring the building, it looks great on the surface. But a shiny lobby doesn't fix a culture of neglect. Whether it's morning coffee, rotting trash, or broken security gates and HVAC systems, once you're locked in, you're on your own.

My updated review of Gyro King New Haven

And we're back...

After expressing my frustration with the Gyro King a couple months ago, I figured it was time to try again.

Two more times, actually. In person.

The skinny:

The lighting in this place is absolutely abysmal. They have this weird honeycomb lighting over the main area that you'd find in some kind of elitist gym where guys/gals are squatting a metric ton. It's WAY too bright. In short, the lighting sucks. The plants are fake. The layout is weird. They also have AI art. There's a sizable liminal space in the back. Even weirder.

Service is pretty fast - not friendly - but fast. And the food is cheap.

And the food is good. It's actually good. I went two days in a row. I rather enjoyed it. And it was - relatively speaking - cheap.

First photo is your cookie-cutter mix chicken/lamb gyro over rice + white sauce + hot sauce + every veggie behind the counter. Both meats were moist and flavorful. The rice was pretty solid, the sauces were on the lighter side but fine. The veggies, while a bit weird and not at all seasoned (I don't think salad is supposed to be seasoned anyway), were fine as well. The platter was $11 plus tax. Cheap. The portion was fair. For the price, I think it was a pretty good deal, and I was happy with the quality.

Second photo is the "Chapli Kebab." Admittedly, I have no idea what the fuck this is. I don't know what kind of meat it was. Mystery meat. Maybe gyro. Maybe chicken. I didn't care. It was delicious. It was a deep fried meat patty, heavily seasoned. And spicy. I loved it and will order many of them. You can even add a chapli kebab to other dishes for $4. That's a crazy proposition. I think the chapli kebab dish was $14 + tax.

Dear Gyro King, I'm sorry I was so upset with you last time, and I hope we can be friends.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk. I'm going to go back to Gyro King a few more times and try a few more interesting looking items, but overall, would recommend.

Good Fall/Halloween Spot

Hello!

I'm new to the area and trying to find a good place with my friend who is not from this country and is really into new England fall/Halloween stuff and has never experienced it. I have a couple of requirements.

  1. Has to be open until at least 7 because of scheduling conflicts, I've noticed places like bishops are only open until 5.

  2. Has to be a place where we can buy a pumpkin.

Any ideas

Fabric store near New Haven?

I’m looking for something like cotton duck or another tightly woven heavy duty fabric. Without JoAnn’s I’m kind of lost for fabric options around the New Haven area. Does anyone know of a fabric store that carries a wider range? I can order it online but to me fabric needs to be felt to know if it’s what I want. Thanks.

Help with choosing between Wooster sq vs East rock

I’m moving to New Haven from Virginia this December and could use some advice on where to live.

I have friends and family in CT, mostly around Stamford and Greenwich, but wanted to try something different. I’ve visited New Haven a few times and really liked it.

I’ve spent the last year and a half living in a pretty rural area and honestly got tired of having jack shit to do. I’m 29, a pediatric dentist, and my commute will only be around 15 minutes either way, so I mostly care about walkability, being around people my age, and having stuff to do outside of work.

Right now I’m approved for The Corsair starting December 1st, but I’ve also been looking at some 1BRs/studios around Wooster Square.

The Corsair seems like it might be better for meeting people and being close to the gym, coffee shops, etc. Wooster Square was really nice when I visited, seems very walkable, and the vibe was pretty great.

For people who know both areas, which would you pick for someone new to the city who wants to be social and actually get out and do stuff?

Is The Corsair worth it for the first year, or am I overthinking it and Wooster Square would be just as good?

Appreciate any opinions and advice.

Seeking forever home for cats

Thumbnail

For the past eight months I have been caring for two (formerly) stray cats I brought in during a bad snowstorm in February. They are both neutered males, Felv/ FIV negative. During that time they have had several vet visits and are all up to date on their shots. They have had months of socialization with humans and lots of love. At this point I would like to find a forever home for them. Ideally I would like for them to go together, but I know that is not always possible. They were buddies when they lived outside, always eating food I put out for them together. Since coming inside, they have become even closer. They have even learned to wrestle and play. One is a big teddy bear and the other is very shy, but I believe the first one brings him out of his shell and makes him feel safe. This is why I would love for them to find a loving home where they could stay together. If you are interested, please DM me and I can give you more information.

Volunteer opportunities

Hi all! I am a CT native who moved back last year after going to school in D.C. I currently work at a personal injury firm downtown as a paralegal and was wondering about volunteer opportunities available in the New Haven area. I have a couple in mind (New Haven Reads and DESK) but was wondering if there are any law related volunteer opportunities. If y’all know of any, that would be great! If not please leave suggestions. The world is bumming me out and I want to do something to at least make it a little better.

Hi all, wondering if anyone has had any experience getting Invisalign in the area? Don’t have a car so can’t really travel too far to see an orthodontist. Would love to know how much they quoted you and your general experience! Thanks so much
