Scrolling perm_invent in curses interface

Forgive my naïve question, but I'm starting playing again after a lapse of decades!

I love the curses interface.

However, how do I scroll my perm_invent up and down only using the keyboard?

as the Guidebook says: press | (pipe) to use the normal menu controls on the perminv window, enter or esc to switch back.

Yup, it does. I was not reading anywhere near as carefully as I should; such is the danger is reading a document that's very slightly modified from what I've read many times before.
