A Reddit community is called a subreddit, also known as a sub. The subreddits start with r/.

Followers are not important on Reddit. Your followers are not important either. Only your posts and comments are important. Unlike other social media, hashtags are not useful on Reddit. The Reddit account username cannot be changed after signing up. To change it, you will need to create a new account, which will reset your karma.

Karma is an arbitrary measure of how much you contributed. The more upvotes you get, the higher your Karma. Some subreddits require you to have a certain amount of Karma before you can post. Do not spam irrelevant posts to other subreddits or be rude, insulting, or abusive, as you can be downvoted. This will cause you to lose Karma. Try to avoid getting your total Karma in the negative value.

Also make sure to follow our rules, which are prominently displayed in the sidebar to the right.

  1. Make sure to label all posts that contain gore, contain violence, contain a dead body, or can upset anyone as "NSFW." To see how to do this and for a more detailed explanation click here.
  2. Make sure your posts are on-topic and related to Myanmar. Spam) may go well with anything but it has no place in this sub. Please do not spam us with unrelated content.
  3. Please keep discussions civil. Tolling and racism will not be tolerated. Our situation here is not for your "lulz". Also, keep swearing to a minimum. Although we will tolerate swearing if it is part of the narrative/discussion, personal insults, over-the-top vulgarity, etc., will not be tolerated.
  4. Adding a flair to your posts will enable others to easily find similar posts. Flairs are used to categorize posts to easily be found. Click here for more details.
  5. Keep reposting to a minimum. Please check to make sure you don't repost news and pictures that have already been posted. r/MAGIC_EYE_BOT and u/DuplicateDestroyer are trialed to help remove duplicate images. Please reply to the bot or send us a message if the bot got it wrong.

For a brief background of the coup, please see this post I made.

Does the content you're posting here fit more than one community? As per Reddiquette, consider posting to other subs such as the ones listed here if the contents fit more communities.

For example, are you posting news? Then you can post into r/news, r/inthenews, r/worldnews, r/USnews (US news only), r/asia, r/asian, r/asean, r/theworldnews. This list is not exhaustive but please use common sense and make sure the content fits the target sub. That means news only goes to news-related subreddits and pictures go onto picture-related subreddits. Make sure to follow the rules of those subs as well, since each sub has its own set of rules.

Additionally, give some love to the other Myanmar subs: r/saveMyanmar and r/Myanmar2021.

Are you in another country but wish to help the people of Myanmar? See this post.

In summary,

DO

  • Post topics with descriptive subjects
  • Check the subreddit for prior submission of your article or image before posting.
  • Flair your post with the appropriate flair to make them easier to find
  • Upvote posts
  • Tag posts with gore, contain violence, contain a dead body, or can upset anyone as "NSFW."
  • Share posts to more than one subreddits

DON'T

Discussion 💬 ⚠️⚠️Blacklist Removal Scam⚠️⚠️နိုင်ငံရေးအမည်ပျက်စာရင်း ပယ်ဖျက်မှုလိမ်လည်ခြင်း⚠️⚠️

English:

Be cautious of ongoing scams regarding "Blacklist Removal Services".

How this scam works:

  1. Scammer posts a personal story followed by a question to provoke discussion, and a brief mention of successfully removing blacklist status.
  2. Scammer waits for victims interested in getting blacklist status removed to explain further or provide contacts.
  3. In DMs, scammer will claim they can help and ask for money upfront.

Safety Tips:

  1. Check the Profile: Always click on the OP's (Original Poster) username.
  2. Account Age: Be wary of very new accounts (created only a few days or months ago)
  3. Post History: Scammers often have few post history or only post the same "success story" across multiple subreddits.

Discussion 💬 From Myanmar to Singapore - A Diaspora Story

Post image
27 Upvotes

I am currently in Singapore, where there is a large and growing Myanmar community. The Singapore government is notorious for hoarding data and information, so they do not indicate exactly how many people are here and in what categories. They are probably worried about upsetting the locals.

The last known estimate from Channel News Asia puts the number between 200,000 to 300,000. This is a small number compared to the diaspora in Thailand, but Singapore is also a much smaller location so I hear a lot of bamar and kayin being spoken as I walk the streets.

Again, there is no data published but talking to some friends in NGOs like HOME, NUS and government, I think that about 65% are here on short term work permits. About 10% are on longer term S pass and EPs. About 2% are here as students. Maybe 8% of that would be PRs and 2-3% are now Singapore citizens. They may be other passes and status that I don’t know about. Note that these just my personal guesses in terms of the percentages.

As a part of this diaspora, I have tried to talk to representatives of each group to learn about their positive and negative experiences. Here are some summarised points.

Positive: Strict law and order

Many have expressed appreciation for there being strict law and order, leading to much higher levels of personal safety. Girls here feel comfortable walking alone at 2am in the morning. You cannot bribe the police. This is a huge change compared to life in Myanmar.

Negative: Exploitation

To access law enforcement, individuals must be willing to report abuses and exploitation. Many bosses here know that low-income workers from Myanmar are not willing to report these cases to authorities lest they lose their permits and have to go back home. This has led to many abuse cases (underpaid salaries, long working hours, etc) becoming more common. And it is so frustrating for some to know that their bad bosses can be held to account but no one dares to report them.

Positive: Ability to earn money

A lot of workers have appreciated the ability to earn income in a strong currency. The work, especially those in the cleaning or F&B sectors, can be brutal but the income is steady. A lot are able to moonlight and do cleaning on the side and thus save up. There is virtually no income tax. And Singapore is quite open to businesses starting up so those friends who set up shops have found it very easy compared to the paperwork in myanmar.

Negative: High cost of living

Singapore is very expensive, which puts a dent into savings if one wishes to get decent rental rooms or to eat well. So if you are not careful, the money can disappear fast. One must also not forget agents in both Myanmar and Singapore who are asking for thousands of dollars in fees which they do not dare to impose on workers from China or Vietnam. similarly, for SME owners, rent is very high.

Positive: Welcoming locals

Locals here generally do not see the Myanmar community as a threat to their professional jobs. Most of the Myanmar workers are here as blue-collar workers. White collar workers from China and India are more likely to be seen as potential threats. Thus, cases of outright animosity against Myanmar folks are low, unlike in places like Thailand.

Negative: Abusive locals

However, it is just as likely for them to be condescending and see those from Myanmar as uneducated and unintelligent. This often leads employers, especially those of maids, to treat Myanmar folks as simpletons. It does not help that many of the Myanmar folks come with poor English levels and are unable to express themselves well. Thus, they have to put up with this.

Positive: Social mobility is possible

Singapore accept Myanmar folks as PRs and citizens. This is different from places like Dubai. Here, we get access to the same schools as the locals. Top local schools now have Myanmar origin students, and they also go into the top universities. They also give government scholarships to these Myanmar students and accept them in elite work positions. Companies and the government are far more likely to hire you based on skills and qualifications instead of looking at your race.

Negative: Social acceptance is more challenging.

Singapore puts on a strong emphasis on the Chinese, Malay and Indian communities here being all equal as citizens. This is to prevent the type of single race domination we see in places like Malaysia. However, it now means that if you are not part of this CMI group, it is difficult for Singaporeans to accept that you are truly a citizen. My friend has been in Singapore since he was 10. He became a citizen at 21. He served in the Singapore army and is an officer. He works in the Singapore government. He has a Chinese Singaporean wife. Even then, people still talk to him as if his country is Myanmar. So, he suspects that he will never be fully embraced as an equal.

Final thoughts

I don't want to portray Singapore as either a paradise for Myanmar people or a place where everyone is exploited and discriminated against. Neither description would be accurate.

For many people, Singapore offers safety, employment, education and opportunities that would be difficult to find elsewhere. For others, the cost of living, recruitment debts, workplace exploitation and the feeling of never quite belonging can be difficult to overcome.

And the experience of a domestic worker on a Work Permit is obviously very different from that of a university student, a professional or a second-generation Singaporean of Myanmar origin.

I'm sharing this because I think it is worth understanding the diversity of the Myanmar diaspora, including the experiences of people who have settled in places that receive less attention than Thailand.

I'm curious to hear from others in the Myanmar diaspora: If you've lived in Singapore, or in another country outside Myanmar, what has your experience been like? What surprised you most about living there, both positively and negatively?

Discussion 💬 Another big scam?

The Central condo in Yangon really dropped the ball. They charged buyers up to 2 billion kyat, missed every deadline by six years, and then the management just disappeared. Buyers are left hanging outside a locked sales office, holding onto contracts that no one is willing to enforce.

Looking back, the government made its own currency worthless overnight. Banks went down, people lost their savings, and guess what? No one faced consequences since the ones who should have prosecuted were the very people causing the mess.

Now, scam centers are popping up all over Mandalay and Yangon, and it’s not just on the borders anymore.

Here’s the reality: when the government itself is the main scammer, every smaller scam is just a result of the economy adjusting. You can’t expect a condo developer to play fair when the government is busy seizing savings, wrecking the currency, and not being accountable to anyone.

Without the rule of law, trust goes out the window. And without trust, every deal feels like a game of chance.

It’s not just a few bad apples. We’re all living in this rotten orchard 🤢

Discussion 💬 Genuinely sick of the Gender War drama in Myanmar right now—Here’s my take.

I am exhausted by the endless gender-war posts flooding social media in Myanmar. Most people miss the point. Here is my opinion:

First, yes, we must advocate for women against sexual assault and harassment. (FYI, I know the Yangon case wasn't that, speaking generally.) But blindly insulting innocent schools, uninvolved students, and accusing before knowing the facts was completely out of hand.

Second, it is not entirely wrong to say that SOME people including SOME influencers hopped on the bandwagon just for attention and likes without proper research since half of them didn't even care about countless past cases where nobody gave a damn.

Third, what's right and wrong? It is ridiculous how boys are spamming "chou ban has no right to exist" for example in comments just to mock women's rights slogans like "no matter what we wear, you have no right to harass us". That is so wrong. Women were protesting a serious issue, while boys are making fun of it. Meanwhile, others react out of exhaustion from "ALL men are like that" generalizations. Some girls think all men are the same and hate on them, those girls are wrong too. Just like misogyny, misandry exists. Sad but true.

SO MY POINT IS

Stop fighting for fuck's sake. Everyone with a brain knows rape, sexual assault and harassment are wrong. Brainless people will never accept that, so why waste our energy? Next time when you see someone with a different opinion of yours, even if that opinion is bs, leave it alone. Don't give it attention.

Online "speaking out" isn't stopping rapists and predators(in our country). The only thing that stops these animals is strict, enforced laws with severe punishments so future predators won't dare to do it. Online noise WON'T magically turn EVERYONE good. Ask yourself, do you really think you can enlighten a rapist with a post? Absolutely not.

Lastly, before any of you lecture me that "online awareness pressures societies to create better laws," let’s be real—we are in Myanmar. The military junta kills innocent civilians; there is no rule of law or accountable government that gives a damn about social media outrage or passing protective legislation.

Some ppl might come after me for my opinion but ok I had to say this. That's it. Thanks for reading.

Advice Running away from very controlling parents

Hi i'm 20F and I live under very strict conservative controlling parents which means they take away my electronic devices every night, don't let me go out, don't let me have friends, don't let me talk to strangers online and go through my phone and stuffs. I'm currently trying to study abroad but they haven't said anything explicitly that they'll provide me or when do I go.

I do try to keep everything okay but everyday I feel suffocated and all I want is freedom. Ever since I was a kid, I have been struggling with social anxiety because of them not letting me even talk to strangers. I want to be independent; I want to live in a small apartment alone, have many friends, fall in love, focus on my dreams.

I had suicidal thoughts all the time but I can't give up. I want to breathe once without worrying about being scolded. I know it's not realistic to run away and survive alone in this country. What should I do? I have done IGCSE and GED and also japanese N3 level.

Advice Seeking Advice

I'm so sick of living in this country with no future it's always isn't enough. I'm 28 right now a senior developer tbh jobs seems really hard to obtain for overseas. Would it be a viable idea to join a different workforce get a stay/pass then continue looking for tech jobs within it? Is that realistic or possible? Or am I just being delulu?

Advice Future jobs for the youth?

I am an 18y/o living outside Myanmar right now. I'm supposed to be picking a major and a college soon, but things seem so bleak to me and I don't know wtf I should pursue and if I'll ever live a decent life with a decent job, and on top of everything AI is fucking up pretty much every job market today.

I hate being a disappointment for my parents who are working so hard to fund my life and education outside myanmar. I wanted to ask if yall have any general ideas or suggestions or advice for a confused teenager here 🥲 I do wish to work and settle in Myanmar when i graduate, I just dont know what field would be a good idea to pick tbh. Ig I sometimes do wish the country will be a better place by the time I'm out of college but yeah, idk.

Thank you!

Discussion 💬 How is the VPN situation for everyone?

I was doing ok with cloudflare for both the PC and phone. A couple of days back, the one for PC suddenly stopped working. I tried changing the protocol, flushing the dns, uninstall/reinstall. Nothing works.

Things is, the cloudflare on my phone is working as usual (not on mobile data, obviously). I don't get how the pc one doesn't work while the phone one does when they're both sharing the same wifi. (well, the pc one uses Ethernet cable but one the same network). I'm using mytel fibre.

How's paid vpn situation? I saw some express vpn ads on FB, like 25k for a year or something like that. are they stable/low ping?
