Asking Advice I am afraid to move out alone

I am 25 years old single man, doing a small decent career in SAP, currently living at my mom place not far away from customer site. I want to move back to the city where I did my studies and where a lot of my friends are. But I want to have a roommate, somewhat I know a bit and that I know is reliable.

First of all because rent are quite high atm and I don't need the place for my work and practically.

Secondly because I know I have depressive and borderline episodes and I don't want to live alone, espcially in winter.

My mom is a single veterinarian and keeps telling me that I can stay as long as I want and that is more financially responsible to stay but I start feeling that I want some place of my own like when I was in college. But at the same time I feel like I have no legitimacy to get my own place. I am single, always been, and I have no friends to have as roommate. I don't know what to do.

Asking Advice Is it spoilt that I feel guilty about my mother offering to buy me an apartment?

I’ve come from quite a well off background in terms of finances we’ve not had to worry about money so much throughout our lives as a family, at least on my mother’s end. She works a high paying job and supports us a lot. I am very grateful for this everyday.

I’ve been eager to move out for a while and be on my own but it’s near impossible to find a decent job nowadays that can pay for a whole apartment or flat for rent, even the cheapest options in my area aren’t ideal.

My mother has offered to buy me an apartment wherever I choose to live. I appreciate it a lot and I’m grateful for the background I have as I know not a lot of people have the same privileges I do and I offer help to friends who have financial issues where I can and just try and be self aware of my background. I am often quite insecure because of this because people accuse me of being posh and out of touch and even conservative (I’m a trans lesbian in case you need an answer on that last point take a guess where I stand lol).

I am grateful for the opportunities I have I just feel spoilt and kind of pathetic if I were to own a place of my own, even though I shouldn’t as it’s a nice thing my family wants to do for me.

Asking Advice Am I being Impulsive for wanting to move out just to get a cat? (And is my plan realistic?)

I turned eighteen in August, and for a few years now I've been really wanting to get a cat. My stepdad is very allergic to cats unfortunately, and I've been really lonely as I find it hard to make friends. I am avidly searching for jobs & I'm currently being interviewed for one at a gas station. This is going to be challenging to manage with college, but I really want a cat and a place where I can have freedom.

I already have $1500 a month coming in from my reservation for living expenses (I'm indigenous) and with a job I'll be earning around $2500+ a month. I'm planning on saving up $15k+ before I plan to move out.

I just keep having this feeling that I'm being impulsive and silly about why I'm actually moving out. I'm going to miss being with my family most of the time, but at the same time I want freedom. And a cat.

I'm kind of figuring out how to move out on my own because my parents don't like when I bring up the topic, and my older brother hasn't moved out either, so I don't really have any personal input to see if my plan will actually work. Please comment your thoughts !

Asking Advice Is it a bad idea to quit my job and move into an airbnb before getting a new job? I don’t have a credit score yet and I currently live with my parents. I hate being here, I’m so depressed, and I just want to leave as soon as possible.

I have 20 thousand saved and I saw some airbnbs that are around 1500 or less for a month, with good reviews.

Asking Advice What's the most useful thing you did to make moving day easier?

Moving day can get pretty hectic, so I'm interested in learning what actually helps.

For those who have moved recently, what made your moving day easier than expected?

Did you label boxes, prepare a checklist, book movers early, or do something completely different?

What's one tip you'd recommend to anyone moving soon?

Asking Advice I’m 28 years old always lived at home and got my first apartment with my bf of 5 years but my parents think I’m ruining my life

Me and my family have a good relationship and so does me and my partner. My family also likes my partner as well. We decided to look around and I think we’ve been together long enough that we want some independence from our family since we both live at home and this will be our first time moving out and we do share a dog, so we kinda just wanted to start a new chapter in our life. He makes a really good living and yes, we do plan to get married and have kids and all of that. I told my family today the surprise and was super happy and they told me that this was not what they expected and this isn’t a good surprise to hear and my mom said that this is not right because I am not married even though I’m 28 years old and that I am doing life wrong, they said they are extremely disappointed in me and my partner and said that this completely ruined their day and that they want to cry and they are so heartbroken and I am just genuinely so confused like I didn’t think me getting an apartment which people do every day and it’s a very high class apartment also , would have ruined their lives. They said that they didn’t work so hard in their lives for me to get an apartment they never saw me getting an apartment only buying a house, but the market is not the same as it was 30 or 40 years ago when they bought houses my mom said that she doesn’t want to see me struggle paycheck to paycheck with rent and thought when I called her originally, she thought I was telling her that I was pregnant. Please tell me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t I probably struggle more paycheck to paycheck with a new freaking baby rather than an apartment. I personally have a moral that I want to be married before kids so I’m not planning for that right now, but I just think it’s crazy how they would’ve preferred me to be pregnant rather than getting an apartment but then where would me and my partner raise this baby… At my parents house ?and he doesn’t even live here. He lives when he’s with his own parents so it’s just been a really emotional and mentally taxing day and week. I just wanna know if I’m not the only one who thinks they are taking it way too far and being overly dramatic. My mom thinks that she failed as a mother and wish she gave me more love…… all of this just because I got an apartment 10 minutes away from them and I’m not married. Also we only planned on getting an apartment for one lease and then getting a house after. (Side note : I live with my dad I haven’t lived with my mom in almost 10 years)

Asking Advice Can I pull this off?

I make $2,800 a month. Sometimes a little more but never Less.

I’m looking at an apartment for $1300 with utilities. I have a friend moving into town who can contribute $400 a month to rent.

I have no debt. Just my bills that add up to about $170

This would be my first legit apartment. I’ve lived alone in the past and paid for rent but it was all under $500 a month because I got housing through my jobs.

Do I take the leap and embrace the potential for growth and independence? Or continue to live at my folks place(for the cost of my mental health) where I feel stagnant and stuck in a childlike environment?

Asking Advice My Muslim conservative family found out i’m gay & atheist and now i’m thinking about leaving for good

I'm 22, living in an Arab country in Africa, and I'm trying to figure out how to safely become independent from my family.
For some background, my family recently found out that I'm gay and atheist. They come from a very conservative religious background, and since finding out, things at home have become significantly worse. I've experienced abuse and controlling behavior, and I no longer feel comfortable being myself or making my own decisions around them. My movements are restricted, I feel like I'm constantly being monitored, and I don't feel that I can trust the situation to improve anytime soon.
I've reached a point where I genuinely want to leave home and start building a life of my own. I want to be able to work, support myself, have friends, make my own choices, and eventually live somewhere I don't have to hide who I am out of fear.
The problem is that I have very little money saved. I do have friends who might be able to help me find a job relatively quickly, so I'm considering moving out, finding work, renting a modest place, and gradually saving enough money to leave the country.
However, my long-term goal isn't to stay in this country. I want to leave permanently if I can find a realistic and legal way to do so.
One of my siblings supports me leaving, but believes that moving out only to remain in the same country might not be worth it. Their concern is that my family could eventually find me or continue interfering in my life because they're still nearby. They think I should focus on getting out of the country entirely, rather than struggling to establish an independent life here first.
I'm also registered with UNHCR as a refugee. My family has told me that if I approach UNHCR for help, I could be deported to my country of origin. I don't know how much truth there is to this, whether it's intended to frighten me, or what risks I should actually consider before seeking help. I don't want to make a decision without understanding the possible consequences for my safety and legal status.
I'm torn between leaving home as soon as I can and trying to build financial stability first, versus focusing on finding a way to leave the country altogether.
I know that moving abroad can take a long time, and I'm not expecting an easy solution. I just don't want to spend another year living in an environment where I feel unsafe, controlled, and unable to be myself.
**I'd really appreciate advice from anyone who's been through something similar, particularly LGBTQ+ people from conservative families, survivors of family abuse, or refugees who have had to start over somewhere new.** I'm not asking anyone to decide my life for me. I want honest, practical advice from people who understand what it's like to choose between staying somewhere familiar but harmful and taking a risk to become independent.
I want a future where I can feel safe, be myself, and actually look forward to the person I'm becoming.

Asking Advice Tips on not feeling overwhelmed

Hi everyone! I’m trying to move out but I have alot of stuff and it’s very overwhelming because I don’t have much storage or furniture yet. I’m super overwhelmed because I don’t want to have a room of just boxes. I come from a family of hoarders and I’m looking at all my stuff and I’m just very overwhelmed with everything and where I’m going to put it at the new house. I also am just not sure where to start because this is my first move ever. Thanks in advance!!

Asking Advice I want to move out, is it financially feasible?

I 22(F) want to move out of my parent’s house. A few weeks ago my sister, her husband, and their two kids moved into my parent’s house. We went from 3 to 7. I moved all of my stuff into our guest room and they took my room downstairs in the basement. We had made an agreement that they were not allowed in my room because we have had issues in the past where I was forced to be their default parent.

Flash forward to last week: I was in NYC for a school trip and my dad decided to let both kids stay in my room while I was gone, without telling me. My nephew destroyed some of my makeup and measuring tape. When I told my dad, he brushed me off until I sent him an invoice of how much everything would be to replace (it was only $60). He then told me he would only give me $20. After I raised hell, he called me a bitch and gave me the $60. There are other reasons I want to move out, but I feel like this situation encompasses the behaviors I’m dealing with. Granted they are only like this 20% of the time, but it’s not something I feel like I can deal with for much longer.

I have a friend that is looking for a roommate by December. I just got a new job that would pay $2600-2900/m. Here is a breakdown of my bills, If I were to move in:

Rent + utilities: $980/m
Car/Health Insurance, Phone Plan: $400/m
Gas: $120/m
Subscriptions: $30/m
TOTAL: $1530

My parent’s house is basically the same distance to school + work as this place is, so nothing will change on that end.

Is this a good idea financially? Or should I stick it out with my parents and save more?

Giving Advice Extremely Disappointing Experience. I Would Not Recommend Safe Ship Moving Services.

I am extremely disappointed with my experience with Safe Ship Moving Services and would strongly advise anyone considering this company to explore other moving options.

I scheduled my moving services in April 2026 for a relocation from Dallas, Texas, to Missouri. My belongings were picked up on July 11, 2026, but were not delivered until August 17, 2026. That is 37 days without my furniture and personal belongings! Safe Ship Moving advertises an expected delivery timeframe of 0–10 business days for moves between 500 and 1,000 miles. Unfortunately, my experience was nowhere near that expectation.

Throughout this process, I contacted the company on numerous occasions requesting updates on my shipment. Communication was inconsistent, and I was repeatedly given estimated delivery dates that came and went without my belongings arriving. Rather than receiving clear answers or proactive communication, I constantly had to follow up myself.

What made this experience even more frustrating was that I had relocated to Missouri for a full-time internship. I spent several weeks in my new home without my furniture and other essential belongings. Because I had planned around the company's advertised delivery timeframe, I was forced to spend additional money purchasing necessities that I already owned but could not access.

For context, this was a $5,000 move. Given the amount I paid, I expected a significantly higher level of professionalism, communication, and reliability. Due to the extensive delays and inconvenience, I was informed that I would receive financial compensation. However, I ultimately received only $100, which was extremely disappointing considering the circumstances and additional expenses I incurred.

Another important detail potential customers should know is that Safe Ship Moving Services is a moving broker, not the company that physically transported my belongings. They contracted American Knights Moving and Storage to pick up and deliver my shipment. Unfortunately, when my belongings finally arrived, I discovered that my bed, dresser, and several dishes had been damaged during the moving process.

While I understand that unexpected delays can occur, the combination of excessive delivery delays, inconsistent communication, missed delivery estimates, damaged belongings, and minimal compensation made this an extremely frustrating experience.

My biggest disappointment is that I paid approximately $5,000 for a service that caused more stress, inconvenience, and unexpected expenses than I ever anticipated. Had I known this would be my experience, I absolutely would have chosen another moving company.

I rarely feel compelled to leave such a negative review, but I believe other customers deserve to know what they may be getting into before trusting this company with their belongings.

I would NOT recommend Safe Ship Moving Services. Please do your research, understand that they operate as a broker, and carefully consider your options before booking.

Discussion How do you hide stuff from your parents when moving out??

So I'm moving on friday and my parents offered to help me pack and move everything which is so sweet and I really appreciate them for it but there's one problem. I have a little collection of sex toys suction one, rabbit, WhisperVibe, nipple clips, wand and they have absolutely no idea about any of it lmao. They also don't know I smoke so I have some stuff related to that too. I'm stressing about where to hide everything because I'm scared they'll find something if I just throw it into a random box or bag. I know I'm an adult and it's not that deep but I would literally die of embarrassment if they found any of it. Do I just thank them and tell them I'll handle the move myself or is there a smarter way to hide all this stuff??

Asking Advice Moving across country

Hi
I’m 26/f I want to move from Houston Texas to Seattle Washington, specifically capital hill. Does anyone have any advice or tips for moving across country? I’ve lived on my own before but in the same city, this will be my first experience taking a huge leap and moving across the country. Any advice on living in the cold? Any good places to eat in Seattle? Public transportation? Cost of living? How’s the morning traffic? How’s the night life? How are the locals?

Asking Advice Need renting advice :(

I usually wouldn’t post on here or even be on here, but I don’t have anyone who could explain this to me, and google just isn’t helpful.

So I’m in a pretty toxic home environment right now, and I’ve been plotting my escape for a long time.

I might have enough in a few years to rent an apartment room, but i really don’t know much about renting or what the cost would look like and what to be prepared for.

And I’m not even sure what would be the safest place to look for roommate listings because I don’t know anyone with those kinds of connections, and people are so scary and I don’t want to leave this toxic environment just to end up in another one

And on top of that I’m really so so socially awkward and shy around new people and just in general and social norms have always evaded me so I don’t even know what a rent convo or applying convo would look like with roommates and landlords.

So, I guess what I’m asking is for someone to like really hold my hand and explain to me how rent works lol😭

I’m sry guys I like literally live under a rock and have no clue how stuff works 💔💔💔

Asking Advice Does anyone else has this problem?

I plan to move out pretty soon and is actively looking for apartments. I feel like it’s the right step, I hate living at home and I have the financial means to do it. But ofc I have a lot of fear, moving out is a big financial commitment but I can’t stop thinking about my mom too. My mom is super protective of us and I’m one of her few kids that still somewhat listen to her and help her out. But if I move out who’s gonna help her? Everyone else in this house is selfish and never come out of their rooms or clean up after themselves. So who’s gonna help my mom out when I leave? And part of the reason I want to leave is because I am sick of helping my mom clean up their messes. When I see myself moving out I see my mom cleaning, cooking, and crying by herself because no one is helping her but on the other hand, do I want to be the one doing those things instead if I continue to live here.
