Those are Blueberries, right? Metal Shavings in Raw Beef?
Just bought these sirloin tip steaks from Publix and when I got home I saw this?
Is it what I think it is?
Sorry for the crappy photos
Edit: Took it back, Meat Manager insisted it was something from the packaging and couldn’t possibly be metal shavings, idk. Got a refund and some new steaks.

You got a moderately strong magnet? Cause that’ll tell you. Everything metal used in meat production is, almost universally, stainless steel, so if it’s magnetic then it’s probably metal shavings from the production line

Double checking that you know that many types of stainless steel are not magnetic.
It wasn't clear from your comment

Yes, there are austentic steels, but they’re not generally going to be used in hard-wearing industrial equipment like you’d find in a meat processing facility. Those applications are largely going to use martensitic and/or duplex steels in the working parts of industrial processing machines, and those steels are magnetic.

Makes sense, in my industry we use primarily non-magnetic stainless.

Every use is different. Austentic steel is softer and much more resistant to corrosion, so in applications where you need bendable and/or anti-corrosive and/or non-magnetic material it’s great. It’s also super easy to weld

That tracks! Our product is installed outdoors and is made of formed stainless steel panels.
I appreciate the information

This is the kind of exchange that used to comprise Reddit before the ipo. Love to see it.

I bet after they were cut and before they were put in trays they sat in a big stainless steel container covered with aluminum foil and this steak was on top and got some dissolved aluminum on it from the galvanic cell that was accidentally created.

Very possible! Meat manager was very confident it wasn’t from a knife or cutting utensil.

The meat manager is probably correct about that, but you're also correct for returning packaged meat with FOD in the packaging.

Yeah I just started getting into grilling and I am already afraid of giving myself food poisoning so I was not about to “fuck around and find out” as they say

I know I commented on your other post, but I just want to say his response is completely unacceptable. If you’re in the store again please inform the Store manager instead about the issue and please tell them the meat managers response. Also tell them they need to clean the magnetic trap on the bottom of the sharpener out.
Those metal shavings are considered a foreign object and the meat manager handled the issue poorly and needs to coach his cutters to clean their knives off after sharpening them.
His response shows that this happens quite often and you just so happen to catch it. Imagine all the other times it isn’t caught?
What store/store number did you buy this from? If you’re able to dm me that info I’d appreciate it

I’ll speak to the store manager next time I’m there
I just sent you a DM with the store info

I was thinking the exact same thing. An assistant Meat Manager here, that is 100% either a shaving from an oil stone, or its the product of a damaged steel surface. Regardless its a breach of health code and needs dealing with.
Also, to dissuade some mysteries about meat depts, your meat only goes in a mixing bowl if it gets marinated. Steaks do not get stored all stacked together and tossed around as they will turn brown where they touch. They get put in the steel pans and left there until rotated into sealed packaging to be sold on shelf.

Asking what somthing is with such horrible photos and no additional information when it’s literally right there is the real mildly infuriating thing here

Is he really called the Meat Manager xD?!
In Norway we have a TV show called "Mot i Brøstet" (Really translates to "having guts")...and in that series they call the guy responsible for the meat in the grcoerystore "Ham Hitler" (Skinkehitler).

Yeah, meat manager is a common term at grocery stores in the US. Not sure about other countries, but the info you provided is interesting. 👌
