Infuriatig Pillars..
So I finally decided to pay the $50/mo for an underground parking spot at my apartment complex, but every parking spot has a really inconvenient pillar in it..

Obviously support bracing pillars need to go where they need to go but OMG those spaces are so badly laid out that it’s not even funny. This goes beyond mildly infuriating to downright ridiculous.

this falls more on the planning of parking spaces. the pillars gotta do what they gotta do.

That’s pretty much exactly what I said.

Say what you will about the tenets of Reddiquette, Dude, at least it's an ethos.

You added nothing and acted like they didn't just say it lol. This one's on you, bub.

You repeated what they said.
The person who made the comment that you repeated, said you repeated what they said.
Why are you upset by that?
Are you a parrot? If you are I can maybe understand this behavior.

You didn’t look down there first?

u/jetteh22 10h ago
They probably weren’t told which space was theirs ahead of time

Are apartment parking spots normally numbered if you're given one specific spot? As opposed to being allowed to park anywhere in the lot.
I assumed so but I could be wrong.
3
u/jetteh22 8h ago
You’re probably right. I’ve also seen them numbered on the beams above the spot instead of on the concrete but OP did say “all the spots”
Implying not just theirs.

I see that no one is even parked down there. Tell them to fix the lines and they would sell more spaces, that might actually motivate management to do something.

THATS NOT EVEN AN EFFICIENT WAY TO ARRANGE THEM!

It's either that or aligned with the posts and leave a gap in between each pillar and hashed out dead space near the middle walls. They definitely chose chaos and a few more spots over order and a few less spots.

u/WhatTheFlox 10h ago
Should have just made the spot next to it handicap/wheelchair only parking, and the spot the pillars are in as the accessible area next to it for no one to park in.

u/YandereValkyrie 10h ago
If only they had a way to make those parking spaces line up straight at a right angle with the pillars like a normal parking garage...

$50/month is a great price, you must live in a small city.

Ya, I'm in Boston and I was looking for the infuriating part. But I understand if the standards are different where u are, then yes, that's not so fun. Even where I am I get real upset when I inevitably bag the door on a concrete pillar. Have that paint pen handy:)

u/rygdav 10h ago
Really? Genuinely asking; I’ve never paid for parking at an apartment. That price seems super high to me with zero experience and nothing to compare it to
6
u/zcewaunt 9h ago
It's low for underground, yeah. I live in a medium sized city and it's about $150/mo for underground. Above ground parking might go for $50/mo.

u/rygdav 9h ago
I’ve never lived in a big apartment building or complex before, but I do work in them. The ones with fancy gated garages or lots I’m always curious how much the parking is.
Sometimes I look up the prices of apartments online, but never see anything about parking. Thanks to Reddit, I know I live in a very cheap city, but still flabbergasted at some apartment prices. Thankfully, I scored a super cheap house so hopefully I won’t ever have to worry about rent prices

It takes $250 a month minimum to cover the full cost indoor parking, and considerably more if it is underground. Outdoor parking is mostly land costs, so it is location dependent. A lot of places offer it for less because they were legally mandated to build more than they needed and it doesn't save you much money to keep it empty to you might as well give it away cheap. Similarly you could split the costs between workers and residents who are unlikely to be there at the same time. There are between 800 million and 2 billion parking spaces in the US so parking in general is just way overbuilt.

Where I live, car break-ins at underground garages are rampant. And the landlord takes no responsibility for it ("park at your own risk") even though you pay. I don't envy the people that have to use them.

Chicago guest working for one day in 2005 was $83 for me. I asked them how they slept at night

Just rent some tools from home depot and remove the pillars, they can’t need all of them
5
u/SmallPurplePeopleEat 9h ago
I mean, what's the likelihood that they're load bearing pillars? Probably just decorative.

This feels like the parking was planned to be 99-degree spots and were later changed to angled parking. Column layout is different if you do angled parking. Client was an idiot for making this change and the engineering company that designed it shouldn't be allowed to practice if they let the client do this.

Was this your parking space when you bought that truck?
3
u/cottoneyerobb 9h ago
No, I lived on a farm when I bought the truck. I live in the city now and had to consolidate down to 1 vehicle. I picked the most reliable car. It's a PIA getting this vehicle in and out of the garage.

If they made the spaces straight instead of slanted they would avoid the pillars (or at least only have the pillars at the front end of the spot or on one side, instead of halfway down the side and on both sides of the car) and fit correctly. It looks like the slanted spaces are super long anyway, judging by how far forward that one car is.

u/ShutYourDumbUglyFace 7h ago
I feel like you're more annoyed with the non-structural paint job marking the parking spots than the very necessary structural columns that have to be there.
1
u/throw-a-way9002 7h ago
I have a coworker who hit a pole like this, yellow paint smeared down the entire side of her car. 2 years later she still insists it's the pole's fault.

From the look of that closer pillar, someone else is probably arguing that exact same thing

Does OP know that those ‘infuriating’ pillars actually hold the building up?
8
u/EmperorUmi 9h ago
Did you know they could’ve painted the parking spots properly so those pillars aren’t in the way?
In the first two pics, you can see the pillars are damaged, too, most likely from someone trying to enter or exit a parking spot.2
u/iamunableto 9h ago
there’s also plenty of useless ones here, like the two pillars directly next to a foundational brick wall, those have no reason to be there

u/ColdFreezer 10h ago
Whoever planned this parking lot didn’t do any planning. This is horrible.
