Kids are impressionable though, and you should lead by example.

"Kids remember don't use AI, what, me? I can use AI because... because, well, we're not the same I'm the teacher"

I somewhat agree with you, but there's a difference between using AI responsibly as a quick tool by someone who got their M.A./M.S. the old fashioned way, and a student who doesn't know how to produce something on their own.

It's like putting a baby in an uber instead of teaching them to walk. And, if you work with these generations of kids you'd know that they are academic babies.

Specifically using AI to tell people not to use AI is dumbassery though. It's like showing a kid how to do a math problem with a calculator then asking them to do it by hand

I do not agree. This is not an analogous situation. If an English teacher provided an AI constructed model for a paragraph, and then asked students to write their own, I would agree with you.

Let me clarify: I was not attacking your calculator example. I was referring to original comment. I think this conversation is part of the larger zeitgeist of today’s youth culture. Kids today truly grow up feeling that they are equals to the adults around them. They feel respect earned with adults is a truly two way street. Yes, adults can be awful, but kids need to realize this is not the case. Earned milestones should be earned. And stop letting our kids grow up too fast where they even imagine they are on par with an adult.

M8, its a picture of an animal. If the kids are too dumb to understand Clipart versus doing an assignment then their brains are already scrambled.

Their brains are fairly scrambled and AI is a big part of it

Yeah, I hate it when teachers specifically use their own VOICES to ask students to be quiet.

Teachers often have silent hand signals to get kids to be quiet specifically because of this conflict.

All due respect but are you a child? There is absolutely no conflict in a teacher telling students to quiet down.

I’m once again reminded how many redditors are children lol. To me as someone who’s worked as TA before its so obvious why teachers can use AI to assist and students can’t. If teachers save time by using AI they can spend time answering questions and making lectures more interesting

2 text boxes and 3 images (arguably 2)

how much time did this save

Yeah, I remember when I was 10 and asked my father if I could drive the car. He said no. But then he drove the car. When I pointed out the hypocrisy, he was like "we're not the same, I'm an adult and I have a license".

I don't think the teacher is trying to, or should be expected to, set an example of "don't ever use AI for anything". Why would you expect them to?

They just need to ensure for purposes of learning and demonstrating that learning that their students are not using AI on their school work because we know doing will compromise their learning. Seems completely reasonable to me.

You make it seem like using AI is more like smoking.

what if today's subject is irony?

1

u/Sandy-the-Angel 6h ago

Except that it isn't saying not to use ai. Its saying not to use ai to get answers for this test. If anything learning time and place is important for kids.

Do as I say, not as I do. Teaching children that there are different expectations for different purposes and people is exactly what should be done.

Why do children wear uniforms whilst the teacher wears office clothing? Why do parents go to bed later than children? Why do some jobs pay more or less? Saying that children are impressionable and making learning equivalent to a teaching resource is more than an over simplification and exactly the kind of assinine comment parents throw at teachers that just make life harder. If, as it like is, AI, all they've done is make it more visually appealing and child friendly than what might otherwise appear to be a miserable threat.

“Do as I say, not as I do” is supposed to be used to highlight hypocrisy. Not taken as a literal benchmark. Teaching kids that there are different expectations for different parties is exactly what not should be done.

3

u/WhatIsThisNonsenseFo 7h ago

No it SHOULD be done. Children need to learn they are not the same as their teacher because they aren't....

1

u/Moonman_goodbyee 7h ago

That might be the context that you use it in. It's not hypocrisy, in many, many situations it is the instruction. Do as you're asked to do, don't do it the way that I am. It's not hypocrisy it is, as stated in my previous post, the way the world works. Making this clear is important to children.

Teaching kids that there are different expectations for different parties is exactly what not should be done.

No, it is exactly what should be done. Otherwise, how do you explain to a child that you're allowed to drive but they aren't?

I don't know why you're getting down voted. You're right

*If, as it appears to be,

It's the same as saying do not use a calculator in a math test.. this has been the case for years and kids understood the point of not using it during the test but they can use it for other stuff.

The teacher has only asked not to use ai for that assignment not discontinue use indefinitely

The teachers arent being quizzed on their art skills, the students are being tested on their knowledge.
