As a pharmacist I recommend not listening to “life hacks” from random redditors. A lot of these recommendations can be dangerous. Over soaking your skin in moisturizer can lead to irritation and worsening dryness over time. Overdosing on Vitamin D is a problem if your Vitamin D levels are fine and you don’t know what dose to start with. Urea cream can cause damage and discomfort at higher concentrations especially if your skin cracks… etc, etc. you get the idea. Just because someone else had success with something doesn’t mean it will work for you.

The best advice I can give is if you can, go see a dermatologist or doctor. If you can’t, try to stick with relatively neutral OTC options like moisturizing creams. Just know that not all moisturizers are made equal. Try brands like CeraVe or Aveeno in the mean time and apply it a few times a day if necessary. Also taking a daily multivitamin can help. The Vitamin D levels in those are relatively low and the odds of overdosing are also low. They also contain Vitamin E and A which are great for your skin.

But a dermatologist is the best option. They can figure out what’s causing it and recommend a treatment based on that.

As a dermatologist, I recommend seeing this pharmacist.

As a Harmacist, I don't recommend seeing either

As a sadist, OP should exfoliate with 80grit sand paper

As a moist hand, I recommend lukewarm water temps, gentle cleansers and aquaphor.

As an Armacist, I recommend 2 rifles and a shotgun, minimum.

But why does “seasonal dry hands/peeling happen?”

This is great as long as you're not in America. Over here, we get charged too much for even something like this.

I totally get what you're saying, but it's still good advice. Especially since OP might not be American or might have insurance/income to make a doctor's visit feasible. It's silly not to give the best advice just because someone might not be able to follow through with it.

Also they did provide over the counter options in case OP isn't able to make it to the doctor, so it sounds like they did take the American healthcare system into account....

I am indeed an American pharmacist. And you are correct.

Usually dermatologist is a specialist. Most people go through primary care before they get there.

I don't. I go straight to the specialist. The copay is higher but then you're going to someone who is doing less guessing (like a GP would). Many insurance doesn't require any referral (unless it's an HMO).

1

u/sincerely0urs 5h ago

Same. I go directly to whatever specialist I need.

1

u/Southern_Feature_821 9h ago

This is very true but if OP has insurance that has a flat copay for basic and specialist visits, it's worth it to pay the copay. This is also one reason I always get insurance that offers a flat copay for office visits that isn't tied to meeting the yearly deductible first.

As a man, I recommend getting better lotion for your dick beaters. Winter is coming.

I’d like to add that If you use CeraVe that has hyaluronic acid, do not apply on dry hands! Make sure your hands are damp before applying.

Hyaluronic acid acts as a humectant, it’s a water magnet that pulls in and holds moisture.

This advice is actually spot on what my rheumatologist told me when we were comparing dyshidrotic eczema war stories. CeraVe, Aveeno, Cetaphil were her top recommendations

I have hand eczema and contact allergies. I like Cerave moisturizers a lot and use that brand for face and body, but the best moisturizer I’ve found for my hands is Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer. It has a ton of squalane in addition to glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides. Whereas most moisturizers leave a layer on my hands that seems like it washes off the next time I wash my hands, this one doesn’t. I think the squalane is at least part of why it seems so much more resilient to hand washing.

Don't listen to this guy, drink 20 liters of moisturizer

I live in Germany so seeing a dermatologist isn’t a problem and I have like 3 different skin conditions so they already know me.
The reason I don’t wanna get treated there is because my insurance doesn’t cover things that aren’t serious. The oils/creams I use for my existing “non-serious“ conditions already cost me quite a bit of money, not even mentioning my other medications lol

I’m pretty broke rn so spending 30€ on a cream to treat a minor annoyance just isn’t a priority.

Do you think there is an actual risk of this being a serious condition/symptom?

1

u/Dazzling-Exercise761 6h ago

It doesn’t seem serious because you implied that it only happens in the winter. But I’m unfortunately not qualified to diagnose anything. So I can’t say for sure one way or the other.

I don’t know what pharmacists are like in Germany, but in America we are pretty readily available to make recommendations and suggestions. So if it’s possible, I’d say speak to local pharmacist if seeing a doctor isn’t an option. At the very least you can try the over the counter options and see if it improves.

You’re not going to fucking OD on vitamin D with moisturizer. I don’t give a fuck if you’re a pharmacist or not. Stop fear mongering. There have been studies of people in the 1930s and 40s with severe psoriasis who were given absolute monster doses daily. Not only did it markedly improve their psoriasis, it took months to years for the side effects of hypercalcemia to appear of at all, and that may be because the patients were inadequately hydrated.

Now whether or not those lotions will help is debatable.

2

u/Dazzling-Exercise761 6h ago

Who said anything about overdosing on Vitamin D with moisturizer?

Also, I prefer studies that have been published in the last 20-30 years at the very least… something about modern medicine and all that.

“Overdosing on Vitamin D is a problem if your Vitamin D levels are fine…”

Yeah why use Vitamin D when you can use expensive biologics that come with all types of fun side effects! Bonus: They cost as much as a car!

3

u/Dazzling-Exercise761 4h ago

Idk what you’re talking about man. Not sure if you read anything I typed other than what you made up or misread… vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin which means that unlike water soluble vitamins, you can’t just pee out the extra. It’s what makes vitamin A, K, E, and D easier to overdose on.

I didn’t mention anything about biologics or anything that can’t be bought relatively cheap over the counter. I told op that a multivitamin that has vitamin A, D, and E in slightly lower quantities is safer than just randomly taking supplements without getting bloodwork to know what vitamin deficiencies they have.

Someone might get advice to take vitamin D, then go to the store and buy 10,000 unit capsules, which is overkill for someone who has normal or slightly below normal vitamin D levels. Whereas a multivitamin usually has about 400 units. Much safer.

Idk where all this tinfoil hat stuff is coming from, but you should probably direct it at whatever healthcare professional destroyed your trust. I’m just a pharmacist that takes a lot of pride in helping people navigate the ridiculous world of medicine and the terrible American healthcare system.
