I live in Hawaii and weāve had these cups for a while, worse part is that they use that same paper shit for iced drinks then hand over a plastic straw. It makes me so mad I stopped drinking Starbucks lol

u/Trykaris 23h ago
Well there's many more reasons to stop drinking Starbucks but good on you to stop anyway

I guess people will stop buying the stupid unicorn drinks now that theyāre no longer Instagram worthy?

u/VivaLaEmpire 9h ago
Those were only available for 2 days, which is what made some people go completely crazy over them, lol. It's so funny to me how every post/reel/tiktok i saw of someone drinking it said it was horrendous and disgusting.
So dumb!

u/capricorbz 16h ago
Haha this is the exact reason I never get Starbucks when visiting home. It pisses me off.

u/Gliese_667_Cc 1d ago
Iāve had two Starbucks hot coffee cups completely explode on me in the last 6 months because the cup was so flimsy and the shitty lid just flew off. I went back to just making my own damn coffee after having to clean up these two giant spills, including one all over the interior of my car.
9
u/philnolan3d 1d ago
I had that happen while I was working there 20 years ago. I was pouring coffee into the cup for a customer and the cup exploded all over my hand. First aid? Nope. Right back to work.

Theyāre not going green, theyāre cutting costs. The thought that any corporation that large gives a fuck about the environment enough to spend money to offset their impact is fkn laughable.

u/Swirl_On_Top 16h ago edited 16h ago
I can promise you these lids cost them more than the cheap plastic ones.
Their motives are gathering more sales by playing to the sympathies of the consumer who generally wants to protect the environment.
5
u/_QXZ 16h ago
Those consumers have moved to higher end coffee shops. Starbucks ain't never getting them back
4
u/Swirl_On_Top 16h ago
That's quite the broad brush you're painting. I can promise you most of Starbucks customers do indeed care about the environment.
I'm not defending Starbucks necessarily, nor do I think they did this altruistically. But I do think it's a good thing as it shows consumer spending behaviors can force companies into eco friendly choices.

u/ChopSuzi91 1d ago
Well. The good news is, it's definitely water soluble. Unfortunately, this is also bad news for it's functionality.

u/Real_FishyXY 1d ago
Are you holding it upside down? How much coffee hit the lid damn
26
u/philnolan3d 1d ago
Walking around with a full cup makes the coffee move around.

6
u/781nnylasil 1d ago
This was from a 5 minute car drive to my destination. So it probably splashed around a bit.

u/thepenismytea 1d ago
This. I wondered if they filled more in after putting on the lid. Like WTF?
20
u/FunGuy8618 1d ago
It's too evenly distributed to be splashes or overfilling, that's wicking from when they take a sip. It's just one big wet spot at the opening, and then the wetness spreads as it penetrates each layer of the paper and get soaked in. The outside's coffee pattern seems to reflect that as well.
1
u/philnolan3d 1d ago
This is like when they tried paper straws and the straw just got all soggy.

I get Starbucks all the time and never have this happen. Also Starbucks doesn't give a F about the environment.
3
u/781nnylasil 1d ago
They only have these compostable paper lids at 2 locations near me.
2
u/aspophilia 21h ago
I think they only do this in states that regulate stuff like this. Are you in California?
There is a serious, almost apocalyptic-level plastic problem in our environment that we need to address and stop contributing to, but I think making a better ecosystem for reusable cups and incentivizing them more heavily is the better solution. This just creates more waste.

u/ew73 20h ago
Frankly, anything that reduces plastic at any part of the extraction -> creation -> use -> disposal chain is a net good, and there is more than one solution. We can and should do things at every step, not just one.
Even performative bullshit like paper cups with plastic straws is an improvement over plastic cups with plastic straws. While it's not great, it is good. It's okay to admit that, while also demanding better.
10
u/CoolBDPhenom03 8h ago
Iām all for saving the planet and all, but some of these compostable items/containers are just not usable in the real world.
17
u/Artrock80 1d ago
The lid is only so you donāt spill it on Yourself or your car interior when driving. If youāre home or at a place with a table or desk, just throw that bad boy away and drink coffee with an open rim like god intended.Ā

5
u/Anoniempjuh 20h ago
The hole in the lid (for drinking) would suggest otherwise.
7
u/midsizedopossum 19h ago
No, it doesn't suggest otherwise at all. The fact that the lid is there to stop spillage while on the move isn't invalidated by the ability to have a drink at the same time.
3
u/Anoniempjuh 18h ago
Sure thing buddy. I reacted to a comment saying that itās only meant for not spilling it on yourself. When the hole clearly means itās meant for drinking as well. The comment I reacted to invalidated that fact.
-2
u/midsizedopossum 18h ago
The lid does only exist so you don't spill the drink. The hole allows you to drink through it while it does its job. That doesn't change the purpose of the lid.
I don't see what part of this you disagree with.
5
u/Anoniempjuh 17h ago
I donāt disagree with you at all? Like Iāve been trying to explain?
Iāll break it down
1 OP implied that the lid is ONLY meant for not spilling the drink on yourself.
2 my comment stated that it is meant for drinking also.
3 you somehow fail to see that I agree with you and you donāt seem to grasp that both indeed are true?Maybe my point was semantic, but whatever. Hope this helps, if not, good luck to you!
2
u/Acrobatic_Pen_7933 14h ago
the sip opening in the lid leads me to believe otherwise, especially considering the sip changes based on the type of coffee provided (hot, hot with foam, cold with foam, etc.)
the different form factors mean that the lid does take the sipping into account. further, statistically the vast majority of coffees are known to be drank on the go. starbucks knows this. we know this. You absolutely know this.
the lid is meant to be drank from. the lid sucks
1
u/Ok_Rip_5338 14h ago
> isn't invalidated by the ability to have a drink at the same time
sure, but only for the first 5 minutes (when the drink is the hottest and undrinkable)

Where is this? I havenāt seen these lids anywhere so Iām curious if this is just in a specific location.
3
u/philnolan3d 1d ago
I haven't seen this in person yet. But that looks bad for them. If I saw someone holding that on the street it would not make me want one.

Is that from the foam? You'd think they'd test this stuff first

This was just drip coffee. It happened to soak it on my 5 minute drive splashing the top in transit.

And plastic straws are better cause the other ones breakoff after a while when u try mixing your drink

u/yahwehforlife 22h ago
As I've gotten older I've realized how diabolical it is that we were drinking HOT coffee l out of a plastic lined cup and plastic lid. š¬

Why are you going to Starbucks !?
If youāre just south of Seattle I KNOW thereās better coffee
This is a result of your poor taste

I'm here to call out Regal Cinemas for their shitty paper straws. It's been years since people have figured out better materials for eco-friendly straws! Regal needs to stop with the paper ones that disintegrate and get punctured by the plastic drink lid. It's ridiculous!
2
u/LFP-Throwaway-3982 12h ago
It's amazing they're sticking to the paper virtue signal when their straws are already corn starch which are much better.

I heard that company's Can make better straws, lids, cups, etc. they just choose not to in hopes that everyone gets pissed off enough they change the laws.
I think there's some truth to it because White Spot had the best paper straws for the longest, everyone now is just catching up.

Whenever I see complaints about starbucks and mcdonalds, they're often valid but very unsurprising.
1
u/Skierspy1998 19h ago
They don't give a shit about their employees, you think they care about the environment?
Please find an actual local coffee shop that has not franchised or expanded nationally or internationally.
If there isn't one, buy a frother and make your own. It'll taste better anyways.
1
u/Bright-Ad4601 19h ago
Wouldn't an effective anti-spill device to be to just provide the same amount of coffee in bigger cups? The extra height would allow for more sloshage. I imagine people would assume they were being short-changed though.

A fast food "going green" is kind of ridiculous. People paying $5 for a coffee, too.

u/k_lo970 14h ago
Starbucks doesn't care about the environment but they are cheap. It is probably a local/state government regulation. My community banned plastic bags in 2010. Now all our to go containers and silverware can't be plastic either. There is better paper cup/lid options that other coffee shops use but it cost more.
The paper dome lids always make me do a double take because it looks so weird still.

u/Mental_Lyptus 13h ago
Tim Hortons tried this shit in Canada a few years back and it didn't last very long. Maybe a couple months
1
u/Civil-Inspector-6274 7h ago
Didnāt they just quietly start reversing their green initiative commitments and fire their sustainability staff? Half of the time these companies are greenwashing anyway and only provide single stream refuse services, even if they did provide the proper services most people are disposing of their waste off property. Yes, these will break down better in landfills, but itās still going to landfills.

u/iiiyotikaiii 5h ago
The paper straws I use in my iced coffee last way longer than that, thatās crazy.

Stop buying coffee at Starbucks and any other major chain for that fact. They don't need your money and when they do, they'll make better choices.

We went from paper cups and plastic straws to plastic cups and paper straws. Except all of those feel good wine moms won't picture a turtle with a straw sticking out of their nose. That's gotta count for something, right?

They dont care about the planet, prob saw it was cheaper and uses the health of the planet as an excuse.
