1) as pointed out, your fruits will make each other go bad faster..ethylene gas etc.
2) onions and potatoes work the same way. not meant to be near each other.

I keep my onions in my vehicles glove box and my potatoes go on the guest bathroom medicine cabinet. Gotta keep those two separated as much as possible.

Do the best with the space you have. We keep potatoes in our basement because it's dark and cool. We keep onions and garlic in burlap sacks (repurposed rice bags, since large quantities of rice often come in burlap sacks) hanging by the top of the basement steps. Most other vegetables go in the fridge.
You can also keep bananas in the fridge to keep them ripe longer. The skin will brown, but the fruit itself will be fine.

Well.....
Potatoes , yams and sweet potatoes should have a separate drawer to themselves.
Citrus and fruit should be in the fridge.
Bananas should be kept in a separate bowl away from all the other fruit. Unless you're trying to get the fruit to ripen faster and then you can place them by each other Or use a paper bag.
Onions should be kept in a separate location from everything as well obviously outside of the fridge.
Tomatoes should not be placed in the fridge. Unless you have a surplus and you know you won't be able to eat them before they go bad.

I specifically buy overripe bananas at a discount to make the moistest tastiest chocolate chip-studded banana bread because I eat so many bananas that they never have the chance to go brown enough. Do people really just buy bananas only to let them rot? Bananas are the bomb.

u/Bonnieearnold Sep 15 '26
Yeah. Sometimes you buy bananas and then you just don’t feel like a banana and then, suddenly, it’s over. Bananas require commitment.

Just munch em down, it's a healthy way to fill your stomach in like one minute. I don't even like bananas and I eat 2 a day solely for the fiber cause they're quick and easy. I wish I liked em.

Try green and brown bananas and see how your opinion changes. For me, I can't stand green bananas (can't tell if I have a mild allergy or not) but borderline brown bananas feel like a cheat code for a healthy dessert.

I do. Bananas taste weird to me unless they’re in something else: oatmeal, pancakes/waffles, banana zucchini bread, yogurt parfaits, etc.
I can crush a banana with PB, or make it into a sammy (esp if bacon is involved) but the days of plain banana eating are a forgone conclusion to me.

If you do this, try out a banana bread recipe that uses applesauce. It's less fat and refined sugar (it replaces some of the oil and white sugar), and the results are springy and moist, rather than the all too frequent disappointingly dry.

You guys don't eat your bananas? I either eat them, or if they get as ripe as OPs bananas I freeze them and use them for milkshakes or muffins.
Seriously, frozen banana + milk is an excellent milkshake, or a base for adding more, like chocolate, nuts, or cookies (gingerbread + cinnamon).

I cant focus on the bananas because why do you have banana, oranges, potatoes and onions together together. Who puts potatoes or onions with fruits?
6

u/Music_Girl2000 29d ago
Yeah, the potatoes should be stored in the pantry so they don't build up solanine. And the onions should be stored separately from the fruits to avoid the flavor and smell of onions seeping into the fruit

bonus protip: break the bunch apart when you first get them. that way once they start getting extra ripe and you go to grab one you avoid accidentally snapping the top off adjacent bananas

u/IndependentPutrid564 29d ago

So actually the reason why is because you’re hanging them the wrong way round!
The weight applied to the stem is much greater when the bananas are facing away from the stand/hook, so just turn them around in future!
Also yeah, the stuff about the fruit being too close and causing faster ripening is true, but it’s actually the bananas’ fault!

FYI, onions produce a great amount of ethylene gas, which causes bananas to ripen faster. That was likely a factor in your bananacide.
Apples produce a lot of it too, so similarly, for better banana health, better not to keep them right next to apples.

So the problem is that potatoes will make everything else rot in the basket. They need to be by themselves in a dark cupboard. Onions and potatoes ESPECIALLY cannot be next to each other they both will rot. This whole arrangement is basically a compost bin. Make some banana bread and move on with your lesson haha!

The ethylene gas from the onion in your fruit bowl of madness ripened the bananas past their prime, will give everything here a little kiss of onion flavour, and add to the charm of the whole thing by encouraging your potatoes to grow eyes.
Those potatoes will also make your onion rot faster get soft and mushy, which already appears to be starting.
Perfect gift basket for your enemy, 10/10.
