Education/Career Where can I learn about meteorology?
Title. Ideally for free. Currently in university, studying maths and CS, for reference.
I'm not looking to get into the meteorology field, but I'm just naturally interested in being able to interpret graphs/figures and understand various phenomena and such. For example: understanding why Europe is much warmer than Canada despite being further up north, understanding surface pressure charts, understanding meteorological phenomena like El niño etc.

Updated rules: Unsolicited promotion of weather-related apps, websites, software tools or services is not allowed. If you have developed a tool that you believe would be useful to the community, please contact the moderators before posting.
Hi all, new rule as now seen in the sidebar/title. Apologies for the slow roll out. Please report immediately any infringements.
Unsolicited promotion of weather-related apps, websites, software tools or services is not allowed. If you have developed a tool that you believe would be useful to the community, please contact the moderators before posting.
I haven't explicitly mentioned AI slop here - for good reason. AI is used a lot in meteorological research at the moment, some of it good, some not so good. A blanket ban seems unreasonable, but the above rule seems to cover most of the issues we are having in the subreddit.
Upcoming: The moderators will maintain a pinned or recurring thread for community-recommended apps and software (AI or not).

Article/Publications October long-range data is in, and I combined six seasonal weather models into one snowfall forecast for winter 2026/2027. Data reveals a clear Super El Niño pattern: more snow for the Southern and Central U.S., but less snow in the North, southern Canada, and most of Europe
I make seasonal snowfall maps from the long-range models each month, and with the data from October predictions now available, it shows that all six main models now agree on a strong Super El Niño snow pattern this winter.
In the United States, more snow is expected from California and the Southwest into the Southern Plains and the South, while the Pacific Northwest, the Northern Rockies, the Great Lakes, and New England show a below-normal snow signal. But when plotting the change from September to October data, the Northeast showed the biggest improvement in total snowfall forecast. Timing-wise, December looks slow, with most of the snow coming in January and February.
A below-normal snowfall season is also predicted by all six models across southern Canada and most of Europe.
In the article, I present the full set of maps, including the visual change from the previous month's snow forecast, the snow spatial distribution, the forecast for ski areas, and a Snowfall Explorer where you can check the snow forecast for your own state, province, or country.

Hey I made a new app, was wondering if anyone likes it
Hey, I just wanted to share a website I made, its for storm chasing and exploration. It has an ai copilot to find cool things to see like abandoned mines off the map, scp analysis, radar, storm prediction, super cell and mesocyclones visuals, a warning notification, a weather brief and a super cell + tornado chance system that overlays and shows the most likely area to produce a storm, a super cell or a tornado! I just wanted to share it, I'm new so sorry if I broke a advertising rule or something. Thank you!!!

Advice/Questions/Self what can I expect?
hi! after high school, i’m planning to go to college to study meteorology and weather, and i’d love to hear from people who have experience in this field! i’ve always been fascinated by weather, especially tornadoes and severe storms. i’m even considering getting into storm chasing in my free time someday! i also want to understand what career opportunities are available, what i should expect from college, and what working in meteorology is actually like. i want to turn something i’m genuinely passionate about into a career that can provide a stable future for me.
i’d love to hear about different career paths, college experiences, advice for someone just starting out, and anything you wish you’d known before getting into this field!
any advice, personal experiences, or recommendations will be greatly appreciated!! <33

Should I minor in AI with a meteorology degree?
Hey everyone,
I have noticed the future of metrology is changing especially in the forecasting sector. The NWS is now beginning to hire meteorologists with better communication skills verbally and written. My thing that sets me apart is behind the scenes in broadcasting like producing, directing, and camera operating with sports that then translates to the news. I think now I wanna more diversify myself and maybe get a minor in AI. My toolset would then be broadcasting, communications, media, and AI. I just wanted to get some input wondering if AI is the right choice to complement my skills.

Latest westerly wind burst is a sight to behold
The westerly wind anomalies between 150W and 160E, which covers a distance around 3000mi, are really amazing to see. This WWB is rivaling the one from the summer. The El Niño won’t quit.

Advice/Questions/Self Custom weather radar creator
I'm looking for a website (or app) that lets me create and customize storms, and that shows what the storm would do, based on real life conditions. I'm planning on using this for a hobby I want to do outside of meteorology. I would prefer it if the storm and the radar looked realistic, something you'd see in real life, with both realistic and unrealistic storms.
