living here Andrew Shoemaker Lahaina Gallery

I don’t know why this popped into my head, and I felt myself reminiscing about this gallery and the feeling I would get when I would walk in.

The photos were stunning and the glossy prints seemed to always take your breath away.

But there was one thing I just remembered was the smell of the gallery. It wasn’t an artificial scent but one that just felt fresh and always super distinct to the gallery. I don’t know why but year after year everytime I would visit we would wander into that gallery and the scent would always be the same.

It is so sad that not only physical buildings and history and art are gone, but even the little things like the scent of that gallery cannot be recreated. :(

Red sand beach closure

Last I heard it was due to instability after the earthquake. Is there a current reason we’re using to keep tourists out, I like to keep people accurately updated because I get a lot of questions.
A dangerous trail often isn’t enough since that’s more of a enter at your own risk type of thing.

Recommendations Cremation Costs on Maui

My FIL is nearing the end of his life and my wife and I need to start planning. We don't have a lot of money to spend on funeral services and are looking for just basic cremation services. Nothing fancy.

What does a basic cremation service on Maui cost in 2026 and how many options are there to choose from?

Thank you for your insight.

Aloha, this will be my first general election since moving here and I was wondering when to expect the ballot to be delivered. It seems like I already had the primary ballot delivered by now. Does anyone have any insight?

Police chief accusing mayor of being target of felony investigation

Surprised no thread for this, anyone saw this on the news? Like a month before the election too. Wonder just how deep the corruption is in MPD too with that lieutenant arrest. Crazy he only seemed to have gotten caught because of that fireworks incident. Very curious to see if this accusation will be substantiated, or if it's made up what kind of penalties there should be for such a brazen lie.

HawiianTel Internet Issues (again!)

I was having issues this morning, very slow speeds, but it would go away and then come back. It went away for a few hours and now it is back worse than ever.

Anyone else having issues?

I am sure people are tired of this recurring post, as we are tired of dealing with it, but it is a good log of how often it happens. The last instance was less than 2 weeks ago!

I am going to do the needful and switch back to spectrum :(

Where to go for car alignment / alignment check?

Are there any reputable auto shops on Maui that can do a proper four wheel alignment and will do an initial alignment check for free or a low cost? My car is eating tires like crazy so I know the alignment is off, but since it has plenty of miles on it I’m sure it’s because it needs some new suspension parts. I do all my own work, former mechanic, so ideally I’d like to get the current alignment reading because that will help me pinpoint what exactly needs replacing. Then after I replace the worn parts I’ll take it back to the shop and have them perform the actual alignment adjustment.

I took a different vehicle to a tire & repair in Kahului with a “Good” name last “year” for a suspension issue I didn’t have time to deal with and was not impressed with their service, is there somewhere that has a good reputation for this type of work?

living here If you’re going to the rodeo heads up they changed the arena side box seat policy

In case you’re getting tickets to the rodeo later this month, I guess they’ve changed the policy on the arena side box seats. Last year I was able to buy individual seats inside the box, this year I guess they changed policy and now you have to buy ALL 10 Seats in the box. Definitely a bummer but I’m hoping it’s not as crowded as the 4th of July rodeo because they even ran out of seating in the stands for GA ticket buyers. Pics in the comments of when I tried to buy seats.

living here Need a move-in cleaner

Hello, my wife and I just moved to Kīhei. Our apartment’s walls are awful (smoke stained) and there’s an awful smell perforating everything. We’re looking for a cleaner or two to come in and clean the walls. We bought some TSP and started today but decided we need a professional. ||| Yes, by law our landlord should have ensured the place was clean and we should have checked to make sure our place was clean. ||| If you know a cleaner or are a cleaner who does good work, we’d appreciate to do business with you. Mahalos!

living here Advice for a new resident?

Hi everyone! I just accepted a job in Maui and I’m moving there late October/early November. I’m a recently out trans woman coming from the mainland, having never been to Hawaii. I want to respect the locals and learn about the culture, and I want to give back to the community while I’m here. Do yall have any general advice for me?

Also, are there any volunteering opportunities I can help with for wildfire/storm clean up?

Fair treatment and resources for Hāna School students -INVESTIGATE Hana Administrators

Families and students at Hāna School are facing serious problems that shouldn't exist at any school: unequal access to facilities, water quality concerns, and educational outcomes falling far behind state averages. Math and reading proficiency are less than half the state average, and the community believes this stems from hiring practices that haven't followed proper procedures and staff departures that hurt students.

This matters because our kids deserve safe learning conditions, fair treatment, and qualified teachers who are hired on merit. Preschoolers shouldn't have to share bathrooms with high school students. Every student should have access to clean water. Every student should benefit from transparent hiring and fair practices, not politics.

The petition is asking the Hawaii Department of Education to investigate what's happening at Hāna School—to look at the conditions, the practices, and what's being done to support our keiki. Has anyone in the community felt frustrated by what's been happening at the school? What would you want someone to do if this was your family's school?

Direct hit by Category 3+

If/when Hawaii gets a direct hit from a category 3 or higher, it will be mass destruction and chaos. The evacuation shelters aren't up to code for hurricane strength wind. We already know the infrastructure, power grid, etc. doesn't hold for tropical storm rated wind and rain. Many radio stations and cell providers don't invest in back up power sources. MEMA/HIEMA will be overwhelmed and ineffective. Everyone should be stocked with a minimum 14 days of food/water and even that might not be enough if we get a cat 3 or higher. Even a category 2 might wipe out significant portions of infrastructure.

Insight on why power lines are not being put underground?

It was so heartbreaking to drive over to Lahaina side for the first time after the fires last year and see all those brand spanking new power lines! I understand leaving the lines as is upcountry and elsewhere. (Not ideal, but I get it’s expensive and takes political willpower, etc.) But literally rebuilding a town from the ground up seems like the perfect opportunity to do better.

Just curious if there are any engineers/state workers/county workers/etc. in this sub who have any insight?
