Meta [META] Rule updates and new flairs

Following up on the discussion from https://www.reddit.com/r/Hawaii/comments/1woej2i/meta_new_rule_proposals_and_checkin/, we have decided to make no new rules at this time.

One thing that did come up in the discussion was adding new flairs to the subreddit, which was a great idea. You likely will have noticed them already as we are requiring all posts to be flaired going forward. Thank you to the rest of the mod team who took the time to create the categories and set up the color schemes.

We welcome additional suggestions for flairs, though we are going to avoid getting too specific with them.

Thanks again for your feedback!

Question How to dispose properly of lithium batteries?

I read a while ago that the official guidance was to put batteries in the trash. But then today I saw an instagram post claiming that putting batteries in the trash causes Oahu’s trash incinerator to be inoperative.

I looked it up but am still confused. AA, AAA, 9V, and D batteries are listed as both alkaline and lithium, but C batteries are only lithium.

Can C batteries specifically not go in the trash, assuming I check that my batteries I buy are alkaline? What is the deal?

Gaming Making a Ancient Hawai’i inspired DND game, any tips?

To help make my campaign, I have been using the following sources in the pictures but also different online and oral stories I’ve found/been told. (Extra context, I have not read through the entirety of the respective sources shown in the pictures. Only around 20% of Hawaiian Mythology and skimmed through the 4 sections of Art & Crafts of Hawai’i

That being said, may anyone leave some tips or tales I could possibly include and use? Also some DM-ing advice would also be helpful

Housing Landlord Security Deposit - Next Steps

Hi,

We moved off island when our lease ended back in June. We received part of our $4,675 security deposit back within the 14 days. However the following was deducted:

  • $198.95 pest control
  • $80 cleaning fee
  • $302.43 - damages due to door screen replacement; light bulb replacement; touch up paint
  • $200 coordination fee - for time that property manager took to fix and clean the remaining issues.
  • $12.47 certified mail fee

For context:

  • There were 5 ants found in the kitchen upon move-out inspection. I wiped them up with one hand when property manager showed me. The actual pest control receipt says 'general pest control for cockroaches, ants, centipedes, millipedes, silverfish, spiders and scorpions'.
  • I had booked and paid for a full house clean which took 10+ hours. Property manager wasn't happy with some sections (some overreaction and some warranted). She hounded me for their details, which I provided, and she arranged for them to come back out and do a re-clean. This was an urgent matter which needed to be handled immediately (her words). They did that and she still wasn't satisfied.
  • Damages
    • Property manager told me not to replace 3 of the bulbs due to it being a danger to reach. Said I would be charged for replacements but not labor. Then proceeded to say it wasn't difficult to reach so charged me the labor.
    • Touch up paint was (in my opinion) general wear and tear in a high traffic area of the kitchen.
    • Screen door mesh replacement - I dispute these charges as the move-in and move-out photos were taken from far away vs close up, therefore you can't tell properly what was there prior. Plus it seems like normal wear and tear after two years living on the water in Hawai'i. One screen door was broken when we moved in (which I had noted), one door we never used the whole time we were there, and one had the tiniest catch the size of two pin heads and she replaced the entire screen at our cost.
  • Throughout our tenancy the landlord begrudgingly fixed things after lengthy time of asking and/or chose the cheapest equipment or labor and sometimes didn't pay the handyman. Clearly he's a cheap guy.

However, our lease did have a clause that said maintenance after we moved out, could be charged at a $100 hourly rate for the property manager to coordinate plus we'd have to pay for our deposit to be mailed back.

But looking at the Hawai'i tenant code it appears these aren't valid clauses and only unpaid rent, unreturned missing keys, cleaning costs to return to same condition and accidental/intentional physical property beyond wear and tear.

We just received the final accounts and an additional $17 back due to discrepancy from estimate to actual for the repairs. This arrived 3 months after we moved out.

What are our next steps and what do you think is reasonable to challenge? I admit that I'm emotionally heightened when thinking about both the landlord and property manager and the way we've been treated for 2 years. I also know there was an issue with the previous tenant and they took the landlord to court, so I believe there are 'always issues' with him.

Thanks for reading this far.

Housing 29 Year Old Engineer - Rent or Buy House When Moving Out?

Born and raised here, make 110k as an engineer, single (male), and still live at home with parents. Can I slow down on retirement if I worked really hard in my youth days, gave up most of my 20s and social life to save? I currently have the following (everything was saved from me working and being frugal, no inheritances or help from family other than living with them):

  1. Retirement Accounts Total: $210k saved. Been contributing a lot for the last couple of years, at the cost of not really having fun and not experiencing big life events. But, if I stop contributing today, I will still be a millionaire when I'm 60 (assuming I don't touch it ever, with 7% returns, landing at about $1.1 million).
  2. Regular brokerage (can sell/liquidate stocks whenever): $72k saved
  3. Checkings/Emergency: $4k (I keep this as low as possible to invest elsewhere)
  4. Paid off 2020 Toyota Camry, will drive it until it breaks so that I don't have a new monthly car payment.
  5. I currently take home ~$2,300 biweekly while maxing 401k ($1,021 gone per paycheck), so if I reduce contributions to ~10%, I could take home around ~$2,800 biweekly (or $5,600 monthly) to make up for moving out and living alone.

Should I sell my entire brokerage account for a down payment and buy a 1-2 bedroom apartment in the $300-450k range and feel "house poor"? I won't be able to save aggressively anymore, and will probably feel like I'll be living paycheck to paycheck.

Or, should I just rent somewhere nice to be able to keep saving a bit still, keep growing the regular brokerage account stocks, and not stress about home ownership? Can I splurge a little bit for a $2,750 to $3,500 2-bedroom apartment with air conditioning in Ewa Beach or Aiea?

I know that living at home with family in Hawaii is very common, but I have the urge to break out of my shell and really learn how to be an adult. I feel that the stigma of living at home in my 30s will also affect dating. I feel a bit embarrassed when I tell people that I still live at home, and feel behind when I see all my friends on social media living on their own with their partners and going on cool trips.

Mahalos for listening and appreciate any advice.

Gaming Looking for Hawaii Quake II players from 1997–1999 — Road Runner servers / Kailua LAN party

Aloha! I’m trying to reconnect with the old Quake II Deathmatch community in Hawaii from around 1997–1999.

I played under DTR, sometimes Down2Rock or Destined2Rule.

I remember playing on local servers, possibly one called KOTONK or KATONK, with player rankings and very low ping. I also remember players with names like Smoovy and Caps / Capbz / Cappz.

We had a small LAN party in Kailua with approximately 10–12 players, and I remember communicating with people through ICQ.

I’m mainly hoping to reconnect with the old Hawaii players. Does anyone remember these servers, player handles, or that Kailua LAN party?
Would be great to hear from anyone who was part of that scene. Mahalo!

Education University of Hawai'i at Mãnoa Inquiry

Is the University of Hawai'i at Mãnoa good for premed? I am thinking of applying there, but I'd like to hear from others about their experience. How are the management, academics, campus culture, etc. like? Do they have good opportunities and resources for premed? I appreciate all input, even if you are not a premed student there

Question Tmobile 5G?

I'm thinking of switching from Spectrum to Tmobile 5G Home Wifi. I'm just worried about lags and such. Anyone have any experience switching? How was it? The cost savings is appealing. We have around 10 devices that get regularly used (streaming, browsing, games, etc.). We are in town.

Recommendation Wanted Where to easily harvest gorilla ogo?

In Honolulu. I hear Gorilla Ogo is highly invasive and I am trying to make some seaweed solution for some homemade plant fertilizer, so might as well also do some invasive control! Does anyone by chance know anywhere on island I could easily harvest some without having to swim out too far? Mahalo nui!

Housing Any insight on living in a high rise with young children?

My family and I have lived in Aina Haina for the last few years, but due to our landlord's declining health we need to move out. A friend is offering us a great deal on a 17th story condo near downtown - my wife and I like urban living but haven't done it with kids (we have a 3 and 1 year old). I was wondering if anyone here has done it and has any insight or can share their experience about the good and the bad. Thanks!

Government Discussion of 2026 charter amendments votes.

Besides a few references, I've not seen any real discussion about the upcoming charter amendment votes. I used the reddit search function and only found this.

The Honolulu City Council webpage is here: https://www.honolulucitycouncil.org/oahuvotes

It provides links here: https://www4.honolulu.gov/docushare/dsweb/View/Collection-17112
With PDFs for the text of each amendment.

I mention this because Honolulu Civil Beat just posted an article regarding ranked choice voting, which is question #5.

Maybe the mods should create and pin a post. Then allow readers to fill in their thoughts on each issue.
