Saw someone be like "oh, Europe is so small, we were driving in Sweden, and every time we took a wrong turn we ended up in Norway" and it's like "uhm, yeah? That's cause you were driving along the border. I personally would have to drive for almost 8 hour to reach Sweeden cause I'm no right by the border."

That is what they did with the states in this example. Big states you will still be in them with 8 hours of driving, 8 hours in most cases might be two states. To get 6 you need to be at borders.

Condolences for being stuck in that frozen wasteland are entirely warranted, poor soul

Yeah this. You could drive 10 hours from Beaumont Texas and not reach El Paso Texas, but you could start in Beaumont and go the other way, and drive through Texas. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia with a half hour to spare (Beaumont TX to Donalsonville GA).

Similarly, within 8h you can drive from the Dutch border through Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland and Liechtenstein to Austria.

Counting Luxembourg feels like cheating.

You consider Luxembourg cheating but not Liechtenstein? Found the American!

Actually, I'm a Scandinavian, I simply don't believe in countries that aren't close to a shore.
