My wife had a pretty traumatic experience with one during the time she was pumping for our son. It was 3 in the morning, she had literally just finished and set the bottle down, immediately after, one dropped from the ceiling landing inside. Hell of a shot, and completely devastated her.
Since she stamps them out where she finds them, but she's cool with spiders so that makes up for it.
Honestly I don't blame her.

Lmao cat was like “mmm yeah that’s not my problem chief I’m mammal pest disposal only”
Of my two cats, one regularly murderhobos spiders while the other just watches them skitter across the room. And naturally, the one that watches spiders murderhobos mice while the spider killer sits there confused as to what the hell is going on

As creepy as they are, house centipedes aren’t actually pests! Th try do take care of actual pests though. They’re good to have around though if you see too many, you may want to see what they are feasting on to proliferate so well.
Eve knowing this, I still shriek like banshee every time I see one and jump on to the couch or counter. Freaky little housemates.

This needs to be a top comment. I’d rather live in a house with a few of these guys (you’ll never see more than a few, as they’re fiercely territorial and cannibalistic to boot) and a bunch of spiders all doing free pest control than the alternative!

They're supposedly very good at controlling roach populations. They're also a useful indicator for if your residence has an insect infestation as they'll move on if their food source runs out.

The hero that we dont deserve. We judge this bro by the looks but they take care of every single pest in our homes. House centipedes are true bros.

u/cooscoos89898 Apr 29 '26
I had never seen one of these fuckers until I moved into my new place a few years ago and they enjoy our garage. They make it into the living room more than we would like but we just shoo them out of sight and leave them at the mercy of the cats.
We also compared them to the pokemon Anorith and that made it a little easier to ‘like’ them, and that’s coming from someone who, generally speaking, does enjoy creepy crawlies lmao.

When i realized that they absolutely destroy the shit out of cockroaches i developed an instant sympathy for them. As someone who enjoys creepy crawlies, cockroaches are my biggest nightmare and seeing either a house centipede or a huntsman fuck them up is a sight to behold.

u/Lambdaleth Apr 29 '26
They are such bros. Very scary, surprisingly fragile bros.

I’ll occasionally see one skitter away during a nighttime bathroom run. I let ‘em be - they can monch all the other nasty bugs they want.

this is so cool. these little critters are so beneficial. most people don't even realize they have them because they are very nocturnal. you can thank them for not having roaches in your home

House centipedes are awesome. They eat all the bad bugs and spiders in the house. I leave them alone, they leave me alone and they leave my house pest free. I have one in the living room, it comes out every night when I'm watching TV, does a lap around the room on the ceiling and goes back into hiding.
Also love your build.

This is excellent, nice work.
Like most other humans, I was very creeped out by these guys the first few (dozen) times I saw them. I am not squeamish about bugs, but something about the way they move is unnerving.
I consider it to be one of the successes I can list for my life that I have learned to not be freaked out by house centipedes. I try to make a deal with them where if they stay out of the main part of the house, they can hang out in the basement as much as they want. They usually keep their end of the bargain.
Thank you
8
u/Lambdaleth Apr 29 '26
Thank you!
They used to really, really scare me. I was able to get over my fear of spiders through photography, and I'd love to observe more house centipedes to get over my fear of them as well, but I don't see them all that often. That said, I'm only just scared of them now haha.
It's unfortunate because when they do show up in places I don't want them to be, I try to gently relocate them with a cup and some cardboard, but one of their defense mechanisms is to shoot their own legs off, so by the time I get them outside or to the garage, they only have a couple left TT_TT
3
u/Skewwwagon Apr 30 '26
I could never catch them because they run with like a fucking speed of light. They also scare me so much I genuinely can't sleep until I get rid of it even knowing they are useful and harmless to humans. The minute I tried to cup it it just springs across the wall so fast there's no chance to get it. Other one just saw me with a cup croaching and plain fallen behind my bed headboard. That made it easier lol
I end up killing them, unfortunately, cos I literally can't sleep.
33
u/I-love-seahorses Apr 29 '26
So sad everyone terrified of a harmless insect. Just makes me realize that billions of beneficial insects have been killed because humans are scared of teeny tiny things that literally can't hurt them if they wanted.
24
u/jprakes Apr 29 '26
Technically, they CAN bite humans, so they aren't necessarily harmless. But they are incredibly beneficial insects to have in your home. I do my best to leave them alone when i find them in my home

Ik I’m gonna sound a bit pedantic, and I love a good house centipede, but they are not insects. Rather, centipedes are myriapods, along with millipedes. A lobster is more closely related to an insect than a centipede is :)

u/I-love-seahorses Apr 29 '26
Please more of this. Man I wouldn't have been surprised if you'd said they were crabs. 😂
6
u/flyinggazelletg Apr 29 '26
What if I told you that all insects are basically highly derived crustaceans? So any six legged critter you see on land evolved from a group of crustaceans that traded the sea for land… over 500,000,000 years ago. Clearly not useful colloquially to call insects crustaceans, given their own distinct lineage and insane diversity, but I still think it’s neat. The only other group of crustaceans to have a broad a distribution across the continents are isopods in the form of your classic woodlice/pillbugs/roly-polies.

except you can actually hear them running around at night. like when I left a plastic bag on the floor and heard the rustling in the dark.
they’ll also climb in your bed, on your pillow, etc.
in short, thank you very much, I’ll take my house without centipedes. if you enjoy this, to each their own.

I really liked the Ideas Insects set, though I would love to see them tackle more Arachnids like that. Though the latest iteration of Aragog is probably the most realistic spider I've ever seen Lego make.
