📝 Special Contribution The Broken Guide #1: Hair loss; what men should know

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. This is not medical advice and nobody should start any medication based on a Reddit post. This guide is based on years of personal research, reading, asking questions, comparing treatments, and going through various hair loss treatments myself.

Introduction

This topic comes up repeatedly on [r/lebanon](r/lebanon) with men asking about thinning hair, finasteride, minoxidil and their side effects. So this is a simple starting point guide for our male members who want to understand their options without getting lost in medical jargon or "miracle product" bullshit.

This first column is not about selling you fake promises. It is about understanding the basic options before you waste years doing nothing and regretting it later.

What causes male hair loss?

The main reason for us losing hair is usually a combination of genetics and a hormone called DHT. This hormone that is a derivative from testosterone (through 5-alpha-reductase conversion) is found in women as well but at much lower quantities.

In genetically predisposed men, some hair follicles are sensitive to DHT or become more sensitive over time causing the hair follicles to shrink, the hair to become thinner, and eventually for some areas to stop producing normal hair altogether.

Real, scientifically proven treatments usually revolve around the following two concepts:

1-Reduce the hormone (DHT) attack on the hair follicles.

2-Stimulate the follicles to grow stronger/thicker hair.

That is exactly where finasteride/dutasteride and minoxidil come in.

Finasteride: the loss prevention medication

Fina's job is to reduce circulating DHT, plain and simple.

For many men finasteride helps slow down hair loss. Some men also regrow some hair.. but the main goal is usually preservation. So basically, if you still have hair, finasteride can help you keep more of it.

But it is not for free. There exist possible side effects that include sexual issues, ejaculation changes, and in fewer cases mood changes. Most men don’t get serious side effects, but some do, and should consult the doctor if any issues arises.

Dutasteride: the stronger alternative

Dutasteride is similar in action to finasteride but stronger.

A simple way to understand it is that finasteride mainly blocks the most important type of the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. Du(two)tasteride blocks two types of that enzyme. That means dutasteride lowers DHT more than finasteride which can make it a powerful option for some men, especially when finasteride is not enough.

Since it reduces DHT at even lower levels, the side effects could possibly be more prevalent that with Finasteride.

Minoxidil: the growth stimulator

Minoxidil does not lower DHT. It works differently. It helps stimulate hair growth through not quite fully understood mechanisms. There are two main versions, topical and oral.

Topical Minox is the liquid or foam you apply to your scalp, usually at 5% concentration for men.

It can help with thinning areas especially at the crown, and sometimes at the hairline too. But you need to apply it twice a day and with consistency. At the beginning some people shed more hair, this is normal and expected. You usually need at least 3 months of twice a day applications to start noticing results.

Side effects include scalp irritation, dandruff and scalp dryness.

Oral Minoxidil is the pill version of the same molecule. This could be useful, especially for people who hate applying liquid every day or who get scalp irritation from topical minoxidil. Usual dose could be as low as 1.25mg twice a day, and as high as 5mg twice a day.

But oral minoxidil is has more serious side effects profile than topical minoxidil. Even at a low dose of total 2.5mg per day, it can affect blood pressure, heart rate, and can cause unwanted hair growth on the face or body.

Final thought

Hair loss is not the end of the world but being willfully blond and pretending it is not happening does not help either. Some men look great bald. Some men prefer to fight for their hair. Both choices are valid.

The idea is to treat your hair early instead of waiting until the situation becomes much harder to fix. Do not panic. Do not buy every miracle oil you see on social media w3al TikTok.

The idea is simple..stop the loss as early as possible and if you are lucky, regrow some of what you already lost. The earlier you act the better your chances usually are.

So if you are serious about it, consult a dermatologist, understand your options properly, ask about the possible side effects and choose a plan that you can actually stick to long term.

This guide is not meant to be a complete textbook on hair loss. It simply covers the basics, the whys and hows. If you have any questions, feel free to post them in the comments section.

💬 Seeking Advice I need advice about friends who never text first

I have a few friends who never text unless I text them first. When we hang out we have a good time, but I keep wondering if we’d even talk if I stopped reaching out. I need some advice, would you bring it up with them or just leave it?

✨ Lounge Talk Do you have plans for Halloween?

I know it's in a while but Halloween is really important to me. My friends aren't going to the Kaliko event nor the Axis lounge event, so I'm still debating on what to do. I was told that last Halloween there was an event in Mar Mikhael, but I missed it. Are you dressing up/partying, staying in to watch scary movies...?

(And yes I also celebrate St. Barbara's.)

** edit: got a few messages... I didn't use the "dating" flair, thank you so much for understanding 🤍

💬 Seeking Advice Working in hospitality is depressive

I am an 18yo male and have been working in hospitality for about 4 to 5 years and I have never seen so much disrespect, hatefulness, and lack of empathy in an industry.

I worked my first job at a family friend's cafeteria (not saying the name) when I was 13yo for about 2 years, my boss was 65yo male I saw him as a father figure to me and I was really sad when I quit but the pay was really low and I was getting older I was like 15 to 16 at the time and needed more money for my new responsibility's.

So I found a new job as a runner for an Arabic restaurant and there I found out how fucked up the outside world really is, the waitress that was working with me thought of me as her errand boy making me go to the market for only her and making me do her job while she was sitting around.

I was seating guests and taking food orders instead of her and she took the credit.

About a month later she left and I got promoted to a waiter, the problem was the owners are putting all the inventory costs, employee wages and advertising pressure on the day to day sales, they didn't invest money into advertising nor inventory so we were really slow to the point that we got 2 to 4 tables a day, so no money means no wages and no inventory making half of the kitchen leave the bartender and runners and shisha workers leave too, so the only people working on the floor were me for day shift a waitress for night shift and an irresponsible manager that didn't do much, I was left alone to do everything I was ordering inventory I was bartending and making shisha with no experience and even If I had only one table it would be hell for me cause I had to do everything, I developed a lot of anxiety and Paranoia of customers making me have so much self-doubt and literally tremble from stress when I had tables. Long story short the place got bankrupt and I was let go in may of 2026.

I needed a new job after a long search it was June and the irresponsible manager contacted me, he told me he was working a summer job at a pool resto/bar (not saying the name) as waiter and he wanted me to work with him 9am to 6pm shifts, I said sure cuz I needed money and I didn't find anything else.

I started there and I got overwhelmed my first day, it was hot as hell and the sun was making me really dizzy. I was the only floor member that day and it's been a long time since I worked so I was a little bit rusty and it's not a typical restaurant so a lot of things are different but got the job done anyways, after the shift ended I was waiting for the manager to finish closing sales so he could distribute tips at the end of the day(we would distribute tips every day), he handed me the tips and sat me down he told me the he didn't really like my job because of how I walk and I looked really irritated by the sun so I couldn't give the perfect smile at customers, but he will get in contact with me if he had something else, I said I was a bit rusty and pleaded to give me a chance to get used to the job, he agreed and told me to come for the week to see, so I did and I was coming from 9am till 7pm so I could have time to close and get my tips every day so almost 10h shifts!!

At the end I stayed with the job but the manager hated me so much, because I took customer matters and complaints onto my hands because that was what I was taught at the old place I used to work at, and he hated that I had no experience in serving or upselling alcohol.

One time cuz I didn't know that we didn't take reservations and I let a family put their rags on 3 benches and they told me they will come in 2 hours I got yelled at and hateful comments by the manager about that, one time I've put an umbrella at the first row of benches next to the pool for some customers and again yelling and hateful comments, I didn't get trained nor told about policies how is that my fault?

At the pool every Friday we did party night from 7pm til 2am and only one of the waiters will be working a night, so I was there and the music was so loud that I couldn't hear the customers requests and orders.

and that day I did a double 9am till 2am,

So what happened was a table of nine ordered a ksara sunset rosé wine bottle, as I said before I didn't have experience in serving alcohol so when I tried to open the bottle I broke the tip of it after I got a handful from the manager (he was also drunk)

I told him to get it off my salary so I wouldn't hear about it later, the next day he told me that "if you didn't know how to open it just tell me" even though I told him that I have no experience in alcohol at the interview.

the reason I didn't say anything about not knowing how to open it was because I didn't want to see myself as a failure.

everyday from that night they always mentioned and bullied me about that fucking bottle, one time he told "where you lying about working as a waiter?" And then proceeded to laugh with the bartender.

I can't tell you how many times I cried in the bathroom there.

The manager never saw how much food I upselled how much customers loved me and respected me, how many long orders i just memorized because he didn't provide pen and paper.

One time I finished wiping the tables with a rag and needed to polish utensils and plates after but there weren't any clean rags to polish with so I cleaned my rag really good and was Polishing with it and he saw me do it, when I finished he yelled at me like " would you eat with those utensils? Are you dirty and disgusting? Where is the hygiene?"

I told him " a real manager would buy clean rags every time rags were unusable, a real manager would have green rags for tables red rags for the kitchen blue ones for the bar but all we had was 4 green rags and almost all of them are turning black, you're right wHeRe iS tHe HyGiEnE? From the first day I worked here I was learning by myself what's wrong and what's right by fucking up every decision I make and getting yelled at, that's how I learned how to work here you never gave me training and you expect me to be perfect? lower your standards" he shuted up and didn't say anything about it.

And then it was September and they were about to close because winter is coming and I quit.

So from September 15th till October 15th (now) I have been looking for a job, but I'm so tired and disgusted by hospitality and lost hope for a life and future, I literally talked and gave CV's to almost 200+ restaurant/cafes but no response.

I don't want to work in hospitality anymore but that's all I have experience in, and I have no education because I dropped out of school when I was in 4th grade elementary school.

Is it over for me?

What should I do?

💬 Seeking Advice Couple date ideas

More of a husband-and-wife kind of date. We’d prefer to stay in Beirut and not go too far, since our little one will be at daycare. We’re literally taking a day off work just to spend some quality time together (We absolutely adore him, though. He’s a gem.)
Oh, and one more thing: we don’t drink, so we’re not looking for anything centered around alcohol (you know, especially in the morning lol)

If you had a decent salary here, would you still want to leave? Or has it become about more than money?
Curious what would genuinely make you stay or come back if you’ve already left.

Hey everyone! 😊

I'm looking to connect with open-minded people who enjoy exploring life, consciousness, spirituality, and different perspectives.

I enjoy meaningful conversations, discovering new ideas, spending time in nature, hiking, meditation, and simply sharing experiences with people who see life from different angles.

It would be great to meet fellow Lebanese people who are curious about life and enjoy genuine human connection. Maybe we could eventually organize nature walks, explore beautiful places in Lebanon, or simply have interesting conversations together.

If this resonates with you, feel free to reach out. I'd love to connect and see where the journey takes us! 🌿✨
