I drew this on Monday, craving to represent what I have seen in med school. Hugely inspired by The Anatomy of the Human Body by William Cheselden, but with a completely anatomically accurate piece from Anatomy Learning. I have not drawn anything relevant since I was 15 (three years ago), and this was a nice experience. What do you guys think? How are my values?

Just Sharing First Time Drawing something other than a Pokemon lol

To me:

I am 34 and started to draw like 1 1/2 months ago. I try do draw every day (sometimes there is just no time or i am just really tired) to improve my skill and want to see how far i come in 100 days, currently on day 38. So far i am very happy with what i have drawn, even this drawing right here.

Most of the time i draw Pokemon. But i catch myself always copying every line so this was my first time just drawing what i see and try to maybe put it in a different perspective, add shadows and lighting on my own etc.

I know there is a lot to improve, but i am working on it and i love it so far! Drawing is super fun and i always finish every drawing because most of the time i am really happy with the result.

I’m gonna colour her hair later but I’m just wondering what I’m I supposed to do for the hair behind her head near her neck? I just drew straight lines but it looks kinda odd. Also is copying from a reference like this actually beneficial or am I wasting my time? It took me like 5 hours lol.

Just Sharing 200 days of drawing consistently

kind of a follow up to a post i made 4 months ago, just wanted to share my progress with a few selected works. I had no prior drawing experience and started from scratch this march, drawing for 5-10 hours on a daily basis, not touching grass for half a year. I feel like I put too much time and focus on drawing characters and neglect learning more complex backgrounds. Criticism welcome!

Tutorial This is how i used references and tracing to actually get better at drawing portraits (Step by step process in description)

Thumbnail

Note: This method is inspired from artist "Angel Ganev"'s techniques of portrait drawing.

  1. Select a good reference
  2. Paste your reference in the canvas twice, reduce opacity of one in the middle.
  3. Choose your preferred method of face construction, i use a mix of Loomis and Reily methos
  4. Draw the structure over the lowered opacity reference. Do not focus on details, break down simple shapes, and try to ignore any details like small crevices in chin, curvature of ears etc. Main goal is to capture the structure and get overall proportions right.
  5. Now redraw the same structure on the right. Try to match the proportions of the initial drawing.
  6. Compare the traced sketch and the untraced sketch. Make note of any areas of improvement, try to correct the sketch without tracing the image again.

Redo this process with multiple references. If you're just starting out, expect to use at least 30-50 references before seeing some improvement. Focus on getting the perspective, proportions, angles and line weight right.

Again, this is just how I learnt to sketch. Once you get this information stored well enough in your mental library, you'll start to sketch faces a lot easier without all the guidelines. This will also prove to be a base for understanding facial planes, which will improve your shading/coloring skills as well.

Share your tries in comments. Feel free to ask any questions and I can try to help you guys as well.

Question I get that in order to be actually good at art, you need to practice the fundamentals, but I’ve gotten to the point where it’s so tedious to do and I can’t even do them right.

Post image

I wanna be a comic artist so bad yet I’m nightmarishly shit at drawing and I can’t get better. I try and try hard to study the fundamentals but I have no idea what the hell I’m doing. I try to do those drawabox lessons because they apparently help me do that but I guess I’m too stupid to comprehend what the fuck I’m doing because even though I’ve done every lesson I haven’t learned a single fucking thing. I get that I have to do stuff like draw from life and draw what I see but every time I do that it fucking sucks and I don’t get what I’m doing, I know that I have to ā€œdraw from funā€ but everything I draw fucking sucks and it’s not FUN because I can’t DRAW anything that I want to.

I feel like I’m that rare kind of person that is completely incapable of learning anything no matter how hard I try so I should just give up on my dreams ig. I get that beginner art is supposed to be bad and you have to practice art for 8594713931571324 hours before you actually are able to be good at drawing but it’s so fucking demoralizing seeing people who have been drawing for like 3 months and are already really good while I’ve been trying for almost a year and I’ve seen fuckall improvement. Iā€˜m probably just being a stupid whiny bitch though so feel free to tell my why I’m wrong in the comments.

So please, for the love of GOD tell Me

What is it missing? It’s a technique issue in the application of shadows but I can’t figure out what.

Edit: I’m only just seeing that the perspective is weak, especially on the left breast. That’ll be something else to address next time.

Critique Shading question

Post image
• Upvotes

A WIP.

Some questions came to mind that I hope to get answers to..

1- how do you know when your shading looks "correct"?

2- is there a "right" and "wrong"?

3- how in the world do I get more confidence with drawing flowers ? Stick to how-to books or use live references?

Critique Some of my studies after drawing 50 Loomis heads. Looking for feedback!

Thumbnail

I realised my head construction was quite wonky, after watching 'The head drawing roadmap I wish I had' by Art by Xiaowen I decided to try to improve my head drawing starting with 50 Loomis head studies.

My process: I watched various videos on how to draw the head using Loomis method, then I would draw 10 heads, then I would trace over the image with red, and compare the 2, seeing where I need to improve(see last slide). I would repeat this cycle 5 times, with 31-50 having simple facial features applied.

My plan after this is to study the skull, then facial features and hair, then attempt value studies of the head and eventually full color portraits.

I would like some critique on my heads as well as my study process and rough roadmap of learning head drawing. Thanks!!
