Rust stains on a cotton shirt.

Post image

A question for the chemistry experts. I've tried every type of detergent and soap. These rust stains just refuse to go away. Way back in school I remember changing iron oxide to other substances, nany colourless. Help, it's on one of my best shirts.

Help with stained silk and bamboo bedding

• Upvotes

I need help!

I have a few sets of Ecosa bamboo sheets and pillowcases (yellow, pink and green) and pink Ecosa silk pillowcases. Over time, they have all started to get yellow stains (I guess from oil and sweat).

It’s so gross and embarrassing and I don’t know how to get the stains out, because you have to be so gentle with these fabrics and can’t use hot water. I also wonder if I’m screwed because I’ve thrown the bamboo stuff in the dryer on occasion (low/cool setting)? But the silk cases have never been in the dryer or been washed with hot water, so they may still have a chance.

Any ideas? For context I’m not American, so I would appreciate generic ingredients vs brand names (for example stuff like Dawn dish soap we don’t have here).

I did manage to get some Retro Clean but am afraid I’ll ruin the silk with that stuff.

Preserving dark clothes - cold washes + salt (Jeeves laundry guy)

Sharing this off the back of another recent post.

Salt/sodium chloride is a natural dye fixant. It helps prevent your dark colours fading or running when laundered; especially in warm or hot water.

The detergents marketed towards dark clothes don’t really perform as well as you would hope, and don’t truly protect your darks from fading.

Hope this helps someone.

see Jeeves NY dry cleaner video about it here

To whoever recommended me the "rubber glove" lint-rolling trick, thank you: I was able to get off a ton of lint off from my Transformers-themed hoodie I recently got for my 25th birthday.

*NEW* Australia and New Zealand Sub Flares!!!!!!!!

G'day ya fucken cunts mate.

Following the support of this post I made asking for the sub to add more distinct international countries, such as the Asia-Pacific region, our delightful admin overlords caved obliged, and we now have an official Australia & New Zealand user flare for the sub - HOWZAAAAT!!!!!

What this means for the sub:
It will help add clarity to Persil versus Persil. I wasn't aware of this, but Persil NZ is different to Persil US.

Also, cultural exchange. I am hoping the things I say make more sense with the awareness that I am from a completely different side of the globe. I also hope you don't look up the timezone when I am giving chaotic advice...

Anyway. I have never been so proud to be an Australian since Steven Bradbury won the winter olympics that one time.

Everyone say 'Cheers u/KismaiAesthetics, you deadset legend.'

Cheers, have a good one. Yewww.

Fabric conditioner allergy

Hi there, firstly we are in the UK so have all the usual limitations of front loading washers, no tumble dryer and no borax. My friend has potentially developed an allergy to her fabric conditioner which is causing rashes. The question is how can she decontaminate all her clothes and washing machine? Obviously binning all the clothes is not an ideal solution, please help!

Please help! I've ruined my white trainers

Post image

Hi - I have some white indoor mizuno trainers and I thought I'd freshen them up. I followed some instructions and used soda crystals diluted into warm/hot water.

They've dried with the tongue a bit blue and with stains.

Are they salvageable?

Wishing I'd just left them a bit dusty 🫣

2in1 rust/oil stains

I know this sort of thing has been posted before but, my clothes are randomly getting rust/oil stains on them, it’s not every load.

I use clothes conditioner & a laundry pod. I don’t like using powder because of how itchy everything feels (even if it’s done right). I’d consider doing something else if anyone has suggestions?

I’ve thought about switching to a washing machine & tumble dryer to see if it would help but I would imagine that it can’t be just because 2in1’s are bad that it causes this sort of staining

I’m in the UK, unsure if water being hard is enough of a reason because my old house (two streets down) never had this issue.

I’m unsure if I’m overloading the load but there’s always a good chunk at the top.

What could be causing the rust/oil looking stains?

I’ve had the machine for 1 year now & ruined 9 nice clothing pieces.
Someone came out to see it a few months ago because I thought it was louder than necessary but they said it’s fine.

Basically- what can be causing the rust/oil stains? And how can I fix it before I ruin more clothes, because it’s not every single time I don’t know how to “check” if it’s worked.

Stinky bras

Please help! My bras have all become super smelly over the last few months. They have a strong vinegar smell. I don't smell and none of my other clothing smells, but it is getting strong enough that I can smell it through my shirt when I'm wearing them. We use Nellie's powder detergent and I've tried adding Resolve Gold with no success.

Shirt came out of dryer with blue Ink like pattern stains

I’m visiting relatives and washed this new shirt of mine at their house. It came out of the dryer looking like this. I have absolutely no idea what these stains are or how they could have occurred. I don’t know if it was something in one of the machines, something on the surface of the machines I didn’t notice or what. To me it looks like permanent ink or dye and the the weirdest thing is the stains look like they have a certain pattern as if they were imprinted on the fabric somehow!

is there any hope of removing these? I have to admit the moment i saw the stains my intuition was the shirt was ruined. it’s just wild - I’ve never seen anything like this before

what I’ve tried so far: scrubbing the fabric with various substances - shout, dish soap, vinegar, baking soda - none has had any effect that I can see.

Do I just need to throw it in the trash or are there other things I should try before giving up?

How to clean these dark marks on new Tshirt?

Post image
3 Upvotes

This Tshirt is brand new, used just twice in 6 months and then it developed these black marks while stored in wardrobe. I dunno how these marks got on it. Is it fungal or something that developed due to moisture?

Any advice to clean these spots is appreciated. Cheers!

Aussie options for black clothing

As per the title trying to work out what I can wash my black cotton and synthetic materials in that won’t damage the colour. Not fussed if it’s powder or liquid at this stage.

More user flare categories than 'international' please!

Hey mods,

I was hoping to know if there was any possibility the user flares could be a bit more specific than international. I know us Aussies and Kiwis exist in this sub, and international is a very broad spectrum of culture and products.

If you wanted to keep it simple, a new flare option could be:

- Asia-Pacific

(encompasses Australia, New Zealand, Asia, India, etc).

I think the International label is worth keeping for niche areas, but I would love some diversity rather than it feeling like 'United States' and 'not United States', if you get what I mean.

Help! Major Tabasco stain on my best pair of jeans

Post image
1 Upvotes

I spill quit a bit of the Tabasco brand hot sauce on my Jean. At first I ran cold water through it with hand soap but it didn’t work then I left it alone for 5 hour and it air dried. Next I soaked them in cold water again and, scrub with hand soap but no change happened. I’m worried to machine wash them as I don’t want to set the stain. What next step can I take.

The picture depicts the stain but soak with water. The stain is much more harsh when dry.

Febu making things smell worse?

Hey all, I’m still fairly new to this but I had been using febu with Persil liquid for a while, and was getting that sour smell from certain loads of laundry but I figured that was because it was early days in my laundry awakening lol. Then I ran out of Febu and around the same time switched to Tide Professional powder and things started smelling better, fresh and maybe the tiniest hint of Tide scent. Then febu came back in stock so I ordered some more and have been adding a scoop to most loads again, and I am back to having the sour smell. It’s quite apparent when the laundry comes out of the washer and less so after it’s dried but still there.

Is this still something I need to power through until these loads are truly clean of buildup, or is something else going on?

ETA: I am in Canada, if anyone has better detergent suggestions I am all ears!

Extra rinse?

Detergents I use
Tide with oxi powder for my white towels with biz
Tide odor refresh pods or liquid for clothes with febu
Sometimes tide hygienic pods for my pre teens clothes with febu

I also use downy citric acid rinse in all loads.

Do I have to do an extra rinse with every single wash? I have a front loader.

Using lower quality detergent with high quality one to bulk it up?

Hey all,

After settling for OMO Ultimate as the best laundry powder, I had a bunch of old detergents I was using in the journey to finding the best. I was wondering, if I mix them into the omo ultimate, is that gonna be bad? how much of a ratio would be best?

Old detergents:

- Aldi Trimat powder (contains lipase)

- OMO Active powder

- Aldi almat powder (no lipase).

Removing stubborn blood stain on polyester?

I have a quarter sized blood stain on mattress protector. I did an oxy soak and also used lipase detergent. None of that worked and so I did a warm bleach soak and it lightly faded the stain but it’s still there. What else should I try ? I have not dried anything but I’m worried the warm water could have set the stain

Citric acid (liquid) won't drain during cycle. Any ideas?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I've been trying to use Downy Rinse and Refresh during the rinse cycle to help freshen up my laundry. The instructions say to add it to the fabric softener compartment of the washing machine. Almost every time I do, it's still in the compartment when the cycle is finished.

I've tried cleaning out the compartment to make sure it's not clogged and I don't believe it is. If I fill the compartment far past the max fill line, it instantly drains into the tub. I've tried adding extra water to meet the max fill line (per the machine instructions) and that still hasn't worked. Any ideas? Or am I better off posting in an appliance repair sub?
