A New Feature in r/Laundry - Reply With Resource

The Problem:

The Reddit wiki/community resource tools still suck. But we get tons of new posts where the fix to the problem is well-plowed ground. Scrud, color transfer and polyquat spots are good examples. Questions about Spa Day are perhaps the archetype.

The Solution:

One of the mods over at [r/CapitalOne](r/CapitalOne) has developed a VERY useful tool for letting any commenter reply to a post with a link to an FAQ-type post, and they can even pin it to the top of the comments. It's called Reply With Resource, and I've posted a couple of comments to this post so you can see how the replies look when you use it. Feel free to try it for yourself here.

How to use it:

User Instructions

To summon the app and make it comment a resource on a post or comment:

  1. Locate the context menu for the post or comment you want to reply to. The button for this typically looks like three dots ("...").
  2. Scroll down to "Reply with resource."
  3. Select a resource via its title in the drop-down.
  4. Choose whether or not you want to pin the resource to the post. In some cases, this option may not be available.
  5. Click OK. That's it!

If you wish to delete the comment (for example, if you accidentally selected the wrong resource), simply comment "!delete" (without quotes).

A Request:

I've gathered some of my most popular posts that get used this way as a starting point, as well as [u/Far-Shift-1962](u/Far-Shift-1962)'s Sunscreen Stains Guide.

If you maintain regional Lipase Lists or other country-specific product recommendations, technique documents, or any other sort of reference post that would be helpful to posters, please send a Modmail with:

  1. Subject: Reply With Resource Addition
  2. The URL of the post you want linked to
  3. A brief description of what information it provides
  4. A proposed short description for the menu

I'll work through getting them added. Please send it to the Modmail rather than messaging me directly or commenting here, so it can actually get worked.

I'm genuinely hopeful that this will help point people to high-quality resources.

More user flare categories than 'international' please!

Hey mods,

I was hoping to know if there was any possibility the user flares could be a bit more specific than international. I know us Aussies and Kiwis exist in this sub, and international is a very broad spectrum of culture and products.

If you wanted to keep it simple, a new flare option could be:

- Asia-Pacific

(encompasses Australia, New Zealand, Asia, India, etc).

I think the International label is worth keeping for niche areas, but I would love some diversity rather than it feeling like 'United States' and 'not United States', if you get what I mean.

*NEW* Australia and New Zealand Sub Flares!!!!!!!!

• Upvotes

G'day ya fucken cunts mate.

Following the support of this post I made asking for the sub to add more distinct international countries, such as the Asia-Pacific region, our delightful admin overlords caved obliged, and we now have an official Australia & New Zealand user flare for the sub - HOWZAAAAT!!!!!

What this means for the sub:
It will help add clarity to Persil versus Persil. I wasn't aware of this, but Persil NZ is different to Persil US.

Also, cultural exchange. I am hoping the things I say make more sense with the awareness that I am from a completely different side of the globe. I also hope you don't look up the timezone when I am giving chaotic advice...

Anyway. I have never been so proud to be an Australian since Steven Bradbury won the winter olympics that one time.

Everyone say 'Cheers u/KismaiAesthetics, you deadset legend.'

Cheers, have a good one. Yewww.

Cat peed in suitcase, on all my costume items I dont usually wash- most importantly my steel boned corsets- please help!

So visiting a friend and went on a 7 day cruise where i dressed up every night-wigs, corsets, hair fascinators, heels, hoop skirt, chunky jewelry. Came back and had the case open and his cat randomly decided he needed to release his liquid manly scent all over the suitcase that held ALL those accessories.

So laundry friends, I’m no stranger to eliminating cat pee smell, but that’s why I’m at a complete loss as to how to clean any of these unwashable/soakable items.

Most pressing on the list is my steel boned corsets. They are all brand new and high quality (not plastic) and it hurts my soul to see them so saturated. 😔 I would think dry cleaning a corset for a stain, but this level of wet makes me worry about rust/corrosion of the busk, grommets and/or inner boning and I dont want to dry the pee into them either. So any recommendations on how to go about washing these would be greatly appreciated!

As for the other things, I can shampoo the wigs but should I add anything to ensure the smell goes away without stripping the style of it? The hair fascinator’s are mostly fake flowers and feathers on a felt round. Is there anything I can do to save those?
I think I am just going to have to hose off the suitcase and hoop skirt, but any kind of remedies for that odious odor are always welcome!

Pic of the purr-pee-traitor included 😼

Washing machine light

You know how the oven has a "oven light" you can turn on to watch your food bake? I wish my washing machine had a "washing machine light" I could turn on to watch my clothes tumble in my front loader.

THANK YOU to the laundry mavens of this sub!!!

My husband and I were recently THROWN UP ON at a concert by a very drunk idiot. I washed the contaminated clothes immediately after, but they were still stained / reeked. I searched the sub and bought some FEBU to soak the clothes in. After a 6 hour soak the water was brown and smelled like puke 🤢.

I then did the longest wash I could (we live in an apartment building with communal Speed Queens in the basement) with Tide Free & Gentle and more FEBU. I almost cried when I took the clothes out - perfectly clean and odorless. My top was from Poshmark and it feels cleaner than it did when it arrived. I also used FEBU on my regular laundry and some old oil & blood stains came out of clothes that have been washed and dried at least a dozen times.

Thank you for helping save my husbands favorite jacket and my limited edition Trader Joe’s Halloween mini tote! I did NOT want to pay $25 to replace a $4 bag.

I struggled for days to remove cat pee from my clothes, until I found out that mouth wash and kitchen degreaser worked wonders

I'm sharing this in case anyone needs it.

Where I live I have a separate floor where I never go during summer because it gets really hot. I've left winter clothes in a laundry basket and forgot about it.

I went to take them last week and noticed a strong cat pee smell, so my cat had peed on them, probably a month ago. I tried washing them 5 times in the washing machine but it never worked.

I tried adding white vinegar and baking soda but the smell was still there.

Then today, I've put my clothes in a big bucket, filled it with water and added mouth wash (with alcohol) and kitchen degreaser (lemon scented). Just to be sure I also added baking soda and lemon scented white vinegar. Mixed everything and let it sit for two hours.

Then, I've put them in the washing machine and instead of the laundry detergent I added a cup of the lemon scented degreaser. Washed on cold. (Never hot temperature, the heat can "cook" the cat pee into your fabric).

And oh my god after desperately trying for days, this mix really worked.

By the way I used mint Listerine mouth wash.

Aussie options for black clothing

As per the title trying to work out what I can wash my black cotton and synthetic materials in that won’t damage the colour. Not fussed if it’s powder or liquid at this stage.

Shirt came out of dryer with blue Ink like pattern stains

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

I’m visiting relatives and washed this new shirt of mine at their house. It came out of the dryer looking like this. I have absolutely no idea what these stains are or how they could have occurred. I don’t know if it was something in one of the machines, something on the surface of the machines I didn’t notice or what. To me it looks like permanent ink or dye and the the weirdest thing is the stains look like they have a certain pattern as if they were imprinted on the fabric somehow!

is there any hope of removing these? I have to admit the moment i saw the stains my intuition was the shirt was ruined. it’s just wild - I’ve never seen anything like this before

what I’ve tried so far: scrubbing the fabric with various substances - shout, dish soap, vinegar, baking soda - none has had any effect that I can see.

Do I just need to throw it in the trash or are there other things I should try before giving up?

Fabric conditioner allergy

• Upvotes

Hi there, firstly we are in the UK so have all the usual limitations of front loading washers, no tumble dryer and no borax. My friend has potentially developed an allergy to her fabric conditioner which is causing rashes. The question is how can she decontaminate all her clothes and washing machine? Obviously binning all the clothes is not an ideal solution, please help!

Addicted to using colour catchers

Are there any credible eco friendly alternatives to colour catcher sheets? I've started using Dr. Beckmann colour collector all in 1 sheets. I use 2 per wash and they always come out grey and horrid looking; which makes me think they are working at catching loose dyes. But I worry about throwing away synthetic fibers needlessly.

I'm looking for opinions of others who use colour catcher sheets. Do they actually work? Or am I being tricked? If they do work, have you got recommendations for eco friendly varieties?

My current wash (in a UK front loading Smeg):

I sort into whites, lights, and blacks.

My clothes are all natural fibers .

40 degrees wash

Waitrose bio detergent+ vanish

Citric acid rinse.

Stinky bras

Please help! My bras have all become super smelly over the last few months. They have a strong vinegar smell. I don't smell and none of my other clothing smells, but it is getting strong enough that I can smell it through my shirt when I'm wearing them. We use Nellie's powder detergent and I've tried adding Resolve Gold with no success.

Please help! I've ruined my white trainers

• Upvotes

Hi - I have some white indoor mizuno trainers and I thought I'd freshen them up. I followed some instructions and used soda crystals diluted into warm/hot water.

They've dried with the tongue a bit blue and with stains.

Are they salvageable?

Wishing I'd just left them a bit dusty 🫣

2in1 rust/oil stains

• Upvotes

I know this sort of thing has been posted before but, my clothes are randomly getting rust/oil stains on them, it’s not every load.

I use clothes conditioner & a laundry pod. I don’t like using powder because of how itchy everything feels (even if it’s done right). I’d consider doing something else if anyone has suggestions?

I’ve thought about switching to a washing machine & tumble dryer to see if it would help but I would imagine that it can’t be just because 2in1’s are bad that it causes this sort of staining

I’m in the UK, unsure if water being hard is enough of a reason because my old house (two streets down) never had this issue.

I’m unsure if I’m overloading the load but there’s always a good chunk at the top.

What could be causing the rust/oil looking stains?

I’ve had the machine for 1 year now & ruined 9 nice clothing pieces.
Someone came out to see it a few months ago because I thought it was louder than necessary but they said it’s fine.

Basically- what can be causing the rust/oil stains? And how can I fix it before I ruin more clothes, because it’s not every single time I don’t know how to “check” if it’s worked.
.

Temporary bucket hand washing

So I’ll try to keep the rage low key as to not distract from my main question. But our brand new (purchased in July) whirlpool 4.2c top loader has broken for the second time with the same spin cycle issue. Both times the repair technician cancelled day before the repair because of “parts” and that was already after waiting a week for the appointment. So now we wait another week for a reschedule … for the second time… FOR A NEW MACHINE.

Deep breath

So I decided to take out some of my anger on some clothes in a 5 gallon bucket. I purchased a screw on lid and was expecting to just fill it with hot water and roll it around on its side until I had enough.

I figured I’d just glance at what the laundry YouTube community had to say about washing in a 5 gallon bucket and everyone’s using this plunger technique … which to me seems way less efficient than just rolling the bucket around like a front loader.

From anyone with experience, is there something I’m missing for why so many people suggest the plunger method? I don’t get it. Thanks in advance.

cheap vodka vs rubbing alcohol vs everclear

Just doing a drive by (a quick look at wool and borax) and I notice a number of recommendations for using cheap vodka for odors.
Why?
Is the assumption that everybody has cheap vodka laying around?
Is there a particular reason not to use rubbing alcohol?
rubbing alcohol = isopropyl alcohol,
70% is ~$0.10/oz
90% is ~$0.15/oz
The cheapest vodka at Walmart is $0.185/oz. 80 proof 40% ethyl alcohol,
quite a few vodkas are priced at ~$0.23-$0.28.
Everclear at Walmart is 75% ethyl alcohol
$0.71/oz
