Places to visit this weekend to feel the "vibe" of the area

Hi late 30s/early 40s child free couple interested in moving to the La Crosse area. We are taking a trip this weekend to check out the area. My husband and I currently live in Chicago and are desperate to leave the big city. I work a Territory Sales job so I have been to the area several times, he has not. Things that are drawing me to the area:

-Nature-I am an avid hiker, biker, kayaker and camper. I am looking for an area with some elevation as I like to hike out west.

-We are looking to escape the city. We don't need a walkable town or trendy restaurants. We have lived in Chicago for 20+ years and are looking for smaller towns/less congestion.

-He is an artist. I am more nature focused.

-He is black and I am white. Any interracial couples willing to share any experiences (positive or negative)

-We play pickleball!

Where should we go this weekend to see the good, bad and ugly? Open to all restaurant, outdoor or artsy recommendations. We really just want to get a feel for the vibe of the area.

Things I am concerned about:

-job opportunities: I am in sales, he is a freelance artist who also works in restaurants. I could keep my current job if we move.

-How is life for a person of color? I want my husband to be comfortable.

-How hard is it to find your community. We don't have children so I worry there may not be a lot of adults our age in the area looking for friends (without kids). We are not anti kids but obviously live a different lifestyle than people with children. Just looking for some perspective on this as none of my friends in Chicago have children.

Any suggestions/ recommendations/ feedback are appreciated!

Recommendations for exterminator (mice) or Handyman

Does anyone have good places that actually helped them or know any handyman that could assist?

I have an issue with mice, need assistance with not just traps, but finding the holes. I'm disabled and this is a far more than I can take care of on my own unfortunately. I've also tried and failed, so clearly I need help.

Also, yes, I have called some of the "main stream" places, but I was not impressed by the way they spoke to me on the phone. Felt more like a scam to get me to pay their monthly fee, but not anyone to actually close the holes or do more than just traps. Also one place laughed at me when I said I was "looking for quotes" and didn't want to tell me the direct price. 😐

Anyways, I appreciate human feedback and your experiences. Any constructive advice is appreciated greatly.

Thank you.

How would a five thousand dolla stimmy check alleviate burdens on the poorest of our community?

I'm curious how the proposed stimmy check might help some of the single moms and even dual low income households in our community? I understand the food banks are even struggling with demand right now. And we have so many homeless it seems like. If you like the poors vote for the stimmy check ✅

I met a beautiful soul...

I walk dogs and spend time with them for doggy day out at the Coulee Humane Society. And honestly, all the dogs are wonderful. Every now and then I come across one that I just know is ready for that special someone, if only I could find the person who is looking for her.

This little girl is one of those dogs. Right now her name is Milli but that was just given to her for now. She is not even responding to it.

What is so special about her? I am a single woman who lives alone, and I am not allowed to have dogs at my apartment. So I walk them to have fun and help them have a good day.

I always try to give them the best day. Every now and again, a dog gives ME the absolute best day. I love cuddling with gentle souls who like to be connected, but also understand personal space. For example, Millie gently rested her chin on me while I was driving out to where I took her hiking. She could have laid in back enjoying the luscious pile of pillows I put out for her. But she preferred to maintain a physical connection in a VERY SWEET and PRECIOUS way.

When we arrived, she let it be known she had serious zoomies. Thanks to the surroundings being enclosed by natural barriers, I was able to let her get all the zoomies she needed. And she was awesome. She always made sure I was aware of where she was. If I said "come here" she came running back at top speed to show off how fast she can run and how she was still paying attention to me and had no intentions of letting me out of her sight. We made a little game of it where she ducked behind the tree stump and then I whispered "come here honey bunny" and she came barreling towards me so fast she ran slightly past and then came in for hugs and pets. All I had to do was say "come here my good girl" and she was so happy to show me how attentive she is.

After she got the zoomies out of her, we walked on the trail as if we had been doing it every day of her life. She was so sweet. She always made sure to sit down next to me and enjoy belly rubs when I needed to rest. And she was just so happy to show me she is a super loyal, super loving, attentive, and very intelligent little girl.

If you are like me where you want a dog to be your sweet little honey bunny and a ride or die, someone you want to care and love, who will show you attentive, unconditional love, and who you are ready to bond with for the rest of your life, this is your special girl.

She is the type of dog that will grow your heart bigger than you ever imagined it could be. She does have needs. For example, there was an old beagle (smaller and less energy than her) who Millie really wanted to be friends with, but she played to rough with that dog. I think she needs more socialization with small dogs. Also, she was jealous and didnt want that little dog getting any pets from me. She decided that we were a pair and she was not going to let that little beagle usurp er position as the "good girl."

I would not recommend with cats. (i dont know about the cat thing, but she was rough with the little dog, so Id be cautious about cats. Millie did seem to understand "be nice" as a command for her behavior.)

I would only recommend with another dog if you foster to adopt first and see if she can adjust. Putting her in a situation where she needs to compete for attention will not be a good thing for her. However, sometimes this is an abandonment trauma reaction, so with time she might change. Honestly, I hope with time it does change because I think she would be happy with siblings. But if forced on her, I dont know how that would work out.

Like most dogs, she needs to get out for zoomies. She's young and needs to run. No way around that. And, she needs someone who has the time and desire to lay around and give her lots of cuddles.

Oh! And she did not seem to shed. I dont know how it is at the end of winter, but I was wearing a sweatshirt and we cuddled a lot and she did not leave any hairs on me. How awesome is that!!

Why does WISDOT seem to hate La Crosse so much?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

When I grew up near La Crosse, I definitely felt this when Eau Claire area got all of those upgrades with 53/29/ 93 being widened tad bit further south. While WISDOT really only made 16 to West Salem grade 4 lane highway since then.

---+++Edit: I am NOT referring to Intercity road expansion. I am talking about like La Crosse to Eau Claire or La Crosse to Oshkosh/Fox cities/Green Bay or La Crosse to Platteville.

Best place to sell sports cards?

Don’t want to have the hassle of listing online, waiting X amount of time to sell, then ship. I have a few binders and boxes of old sports cards, some Pokémon too. Where’s the best place in town to go sell these to?

Catching the sunset

I’ll be arriving to La Crosse this weekend with some friends around 4 PM. Wanted to grab an early dinner and most importantly catch the sunset via a hike. we could easily grab something and go as the sunset /evening hike is the priority.

  1. Granddad bluff the best spot? We are open to hiking a bit longer or going somewhere else, too!
  2. What will be a place to get a quick bite and a beer and not wait too long for a table? Maybe a brewery or a distillery?

I have created my own list, but of course love hearing from locals!! Thank you!!

No Kings La Crosse

Hey all! Indivisible La Crosse will be back this Saturday from 12-2pm in front of the K-Mart Parking lot. This is both a visibility event as well as an opportunity to learn more information about voting for the November 3rd election as there are 3 referrendums on the ballot that everyone should pay close attention to as they can be difficult to understand.

Additionally, we will be encouraging winter preparation donations for WINN (What I Need Now) & YAB (Youth Action Board) as they assist residents that are unhoused. Items to consider but are not limited to: coats, hats, mittens, blankets, etc. These can be new or used! Donations of ready to eat meals and beverages will also be accepted.

Let's work together to get out the vote and keep our community warm for the winter!

We look forward to seeing you there!

La Crosse 2027 Budget

Thumbnail legistar.granicus.com
37 Upvotes

Here’s a breakdown of the proposed 2027 budget using the October 12 figures. These changes aren’t final.

Compared with the adopted 2026 budget:

  • Police: Up $1.45 million (+10.1%).
  • Fire: Up $652,000 (+4.8%).
  • Transit subsidy: Up $834,000, nearly doubling to $1.7 million.
  • Parks, Recreation, Forestry & Facilities: Down $297,000 (−5.9%).
  • Library: Down $186,000 (−3.5%).
  • Streets and refuse/recycling: Down $149,000 (−1.8%).
  • Municipal Court: Its $268,256 general-fund line drops to $0. (Is this a mistake??)

The parks, library, and streets reductions total roughly $632,000.

Some context matters here. The police increase includes restoring previously unfunded officers, taking over a formerly grant-funded position, negotiated raises, and higher overtime budgeting. Fire also restores positions. These department totals don’t tell us how much of each increase is discretionary versus existing commitments.

Overall operating spending would increase about 3.4%, but maintaining services costs more because of health insurance, wages, transit, and other expenses. The city is trying to remain within the state’s Expenditure Restraint Program to retain state aid. A motion to prepare an alternative budget outside that program failed 4–5 on October 12.

My Professional Questions:

Three things stand out in the budget summary:

  1. Why is Municipal Court budgeted at $0? The packet reportedly doesn’t explain whether it’s closing, moving to another funding source, or being reorganized. A zeroed-out line alone doesn’t establish that the court is closing.
  2. Where is the detailed list of service and staffing reductions? The board unanimously requested more detail in September, but the summary says the October packet still lacks a complete explanation of what departments would give up.
  3. What happened to the additional evening public-input meeting? The summary says the committee approved one, but it never appeared on the calendar.

UWL Theatre & Dance Open the 2026-27 Season with the Provocative New Courtroom Drama THE WELKIN!

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi La Crosse! I'm a professor in the Department of Theatre & Dance at UW-La Crosse spreading the word about our productions -- the cheapest theatre tickets in town but with very high quality productions.

Our first show of the season is a new play called The Welkin: imagine 12 Angry Men + The Crucible but feminist and way funnier!

England, 1759. A woman has committed a murder. Upon receiving the death penalty, she claims to be pregnant. If true, it would spare her the noose. What they actually, historically would have done back then is assemble a jury of mothers to determine if she's telling the truth. The play dramatizes these deliberation in what becomes a gripping examination of power, privilege, and the silenced voices of women, as each juror’s own history, hardship, and beliefs shape the verdict. Tense, surprising, and darkly funny, The Welkin asks urgent questions about who gets to decide truth, whose lives are valued, and how personal experience becomes political.

Location: Toland Theatre
Lowe Center for the Arts
301 16th St. N, La Crosse

Climbing Gyms?

Hello!

Recently moved here and google maps isn't being very helpful... does anyone know if there are any indoor climbing gyms around? I LOVED adventure gym as a kid, and I've always wanted to get into it as an adult, so I was hoping there'd be somewhere with an indoor climbing wall, self-rappelling equipment and even free-climb options?

I don't feel comfortable trying outdoors yet, especially with my adversity toward large bugs, so I want to start indoors around people who can give me tips and tricks.

Any advice or suggestions appreciated, thanks!

La Crosse mayor on public safety, the city’s image and budget challenges

Shaundel, you should be absolutely ashamed of yourself. You have the power to help La Crosse deflock, and you outright refuse to acknowledge it.

I don’t know if I’m the only one, but I am so disappointed in how much of a failure this mayor has turned out to be. I am ashamed to say that I voted for him thinking he would be a force for good in the city, and act as a true representative of the people. He has done nothing, he has no plans, and he is simply carrying on the status quo. I will not be voting for him again and I am actively encouraging others to do the same.
