Mod Notice Quick mod update: new rule. We cannot help with AI-written patterns.

Hello, all! Most of us know by now that AIs and LLMs are not good at writing knitting patterns. They don't know how to knit. They certainly don't test knit their own "designs." Therefore, if you see any posts from people who have patterns written by AI, feel free to flag them so we can let them know that AI/LLM written patterns are faulty from the start. Then we can redirect the OP to r/knittingpatterns and Ravelry to find something more suitable (and human written).

Mod Notice FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hello all, mod literallyatree here. I've updated the sub so we have our own wiki pages for the FAQ and a special FAQ just for twisted stitches. The FAQ appears in our sidebar, as well as in the message you should see before posting, and is linked in Rule 7.

Please read the FAQ before posting.

If you are someone who helps by commenting, please know that when you comment "FAQ" or "TwistFAQ" (without quotes), it will trigger automod to come and comment a link to the one you summoned. Thank you to all those who comment to offer their help. Without you, this wouldn't be much of a community.

Because the FAQ is much more accessible now, the mod team will be enforcing Rule 7 with a little more scrutiny now.

I have a beginner tip! Storage solutions

Hihi! I simply wanted to share a brilliant idea my boyfriend had. I needed a way to store my color samples, except they wouldn’t sit straight in a box, due to the thread bulging out. So he had a stroke of genius and brought me these home from Pokémon. They’re playing cards storing sheets.

(Image description: two pictures. Both feature sheet protection plastic with pockets, that are normally used to store playing cards. Instead they have yarn color samples inside)

Heey everyone!

I have knitted the monday sweater from Petiteknit and unintentionally it became quite big. I have gauge swatched and blocked the swatch, aswell as the sweater. I have also followed the instructed cm's from the pattern. Considering I am a tall woman I am very confused with how it turned out this big on me. Does anyone have any idea why it would be this big? Any tips are welcome <3

Hi! I am a beginner knitter and am having issues with my stitches never moving towards the front of my needle as I knit. For context, I am coming from crochet and knit (when possible) in continental combination style but also know how to knit in regular continental style. I've already finished a few knitting projects so I know that I'm creating stitches properly, but am constantly having to use a bobby pin on circular needle cables to slide my stitches up. The stitches themselves don't seem too tight or too loose but every fourth stitch I'm having to push my stitches up. Any help would be appreciated thank you!

SOLVED- Thank you! <3

knitting tools question Arthritic knitter (F30) seeks intentionally bent circular needles (N10)

Hi everyone!

I’m hoping that someone will be able to point me in the right direction. I have a set of 3.25mm (US3/UK10) circular needles that is the most comfortable needle I’ve ever used. The needles are bent in two places, which means they fit the curve of my hand beautifully.

I would love to get other sets in other sizes, but I have absolutely no idea what brand or even age they are (I was given them second hand 10 years ago by someone I no longer speak to) and everything I can find online about bent or curved needles shows me either cabling needles, DPNs, or people who’ve bent their straight needles by accident or on purpose. Mine were definitely made bent intentionally, as there’s no stress marks and the bends are in exactly the same place and angle on both needles.

My particular set is a silver chrome finish and as the finish wears off it’s exposing a brassy colour underneath. The cable is very firm, transparent, green, made of a solid plastic. End to end they’re about 60cm/2ft long, with a 40cm/15in string. They were given to me in Australia in 2016 by a German friend. I’d love to be able to find this exact brand, but mostly I just want other needles that are this shape and hopefully this comfortable to use.

I’ve tried bending straight needles, but getting the bend even is incredibly difficult and thicker needles (6mm+) often won’t bend at all, at least without equipment I don’t have access to. I just want to be able to buy them already bent or curved and I’m hoping one of you lovely folk will be able to help :)

Thanks in advance <3

sweater question Just trying to understand 😅

I am currently working increases on the yoke for saddle shoulders by yarning over either before or after the stitch markers (alternating so the increases are happening on the front and back) and doing twisted knit stitches into the YOs. I am likely not going to frog this bc it’s for my kiddo and I think he won’t care and it’s not a big enough nuisance to me but I’d just like to understand why they look different when I’m doing the same thing on both sides?

tension help! Loose ribbing

The looseness/waviness of the ribbing is driving me nuts. Is my only recourse to frog it and try again with smaller needles? And if so how do I undo a tubular bind off?

where did i go wrong? How To Improve Texture Of Stranded Colorwork In the Round?

Thumbnail

I just finished my first colorwork project. The intent of it was to be practice, so I'm not super upset that I got it doesn't look great- but I don't really know what I did wrong. I did get the color dominance wrong, I know that much- I held the blue closer to me rather than the white- but I don't get why the texture is off. It puckers usually whenever there's a color change from blue to white.

I did buy two worsted weight yarns, but from different brands, and one yarn (the blue) is ever so slightly thicker than the other, so that could be contributing.

I did my best to keep the floats a good tension, not too tight and not too loose, but trying doesn't mean succeeding. I also tried my hardest to keep my blue yarn a little bit lighter of a tension once I noticed the problems that started occurring.

Any advice for how I can knit colorwork, especially in the round, to get a flatter knit surface, would be very appreciated!

EDIT: forgot to link the pattern. It's the crystal trellis cowl by RosiePoseKnitCo.

stitch ID Did I do these toe decreases wrong?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi! This sock is my first real knitting project after a decade of crochet. Did I do the wrong stitch for the decreases? I'm not sure if I knit two together when I was supposed to SSK. I'm following the summer Lee pattern and she's kind of bad at SSK so I looked at another pattern and I don't know if I chose wrong.

About to start the toe for the second sock so I want to get it right!

tension help! Tips for Improving my Stranded Colorwork + Intarsia Project

Thumbnail

Hello fellow knitters! I’m working on the Fern Shawl by Tiny Owl Knits and I’m not pleased with my tension so far, particularly at the beginning and end of the CC section. I currently catch my floats every 3-4st.

I’m also struggling with tension in areas where the start of one row’s CC is far from where the other row ended (see chart photo for example). Currently I’m carrying the CC over to where the next row starts but it ends up too tight or too loose.

I know one of my weaknesses is purl side stranded colorwork tension (I do combination English and Continental). I’d love any suggestions for improving that, for nearer color changes at the edge of the intarsia, and anything else you notice!

Thanks in advance! I still have like around 85% of this project to go so there’s lots of time to practice and refine ☺️

pattern question Help please! Soft waves sweater by drops design

Anyone here ever knitted the soft waves sweater by drops design or just anyone kind enough to help me figure the pattern out? I'm a beginner knitter and trying to knit my first cable sweater. I'm only at row 4 but i'm already very confused. After following all the instruction and reading the diagram, at the end of row 4 i'm left with 5 stitches instead of 3. Already restarted 2 times and still the same problem. Please explain to me how it should be done. Thank you so much in advance for the helpful answers!! 🙏

pattern question Pattern help

Hello! I'm a beginner/intermediate knitting trying to understand a knitting pattern for a hooded scarf and would appreciate some advice as I'm feeling rather stuck!

I've just finished knitting the hood, which has an i-cord edge (something that was new to me), and I'm now moving on to the scarf section, which is confusing me. The instructions begin as follows:

SCARF RIGHT (RS)
Divide your sts in half, keeping the first half of sts on your needles and putting the second half on hold.

Row 1 (RS): k 3 (b), kfb, k till last 5 sts, k2tog, sl 3
Row 2 (WS): p 3 (b), p2tog, p till last 3 sts, sl 3
Row 3 (RS): k 3 (b), k till last 5 sts, k2tog, sl 3
Row 4 (WS): rep row 2

Rep rows 1–4 until scarf measures 24 cm (9.4") from where you divided your sts in half. Make a note of row and stitch count.

I've divided my stitches in half and am ready to start working the rows, but I'm confused. After finishing Row 1
The instructions say to purl the first three stitches of Row2, but I assumed these stitches would be knitted to maintain the i-cord edge, especially since the last three stitches of Row 1 are slipped.

If I slip the last three stitches of Row 1 and then purl the first three stitches of Row 2, the edge doesn't look right to me.

Am I misunderstanding how the i-cord edge is supposed to work here? I thought that if you s3 you should always k3 on the next row. Is it correct to purl those first three stitches on the wrong-side row, or am I misreading the pattern.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

tension help! Judge my floats

This is my first colorwork project, and I’m just trying to check my floats before I get further into the sweater. I was trying to keep my floats small, but there was one round that used 3 colors and I just couldn’t figure out how to catch them and maintain color dominance so I let the floats be 5 stitches long.

How do they look so far? Are they too loose? Do they need to be shorter? Open to any and all helpful criticism. I’d rather know now than later. Thanks!

I’m working on the ivy Cape by Petite Knit and it’s my first time doing increases. These are the shoulder panels - just curious if this is looking correct? I’ve frogged it back now three times due to gaping holes ect..

Also feel like my tension got tighter around the increases and German short rows - will it block out?

pattern question I had to rip back to a lifeline but now I can't remember where the stitch marker went.

I'm making these striped fingerless gloves by knitting house square and I put in a lifeline in glove a on row 18 (I believe, I'm really bad at counting). I made a mistake during the double yarn overs on row 26 and ripped back to the lifeline but I forgot where the stitch marker used to be. I can't seem to figure out where the M1L and M1R in the previous row are so I can't find where it used to be. If anyone can look at the pattern or is familiar that would be amazing because otherwise I don't know what to do except start all over. Sorry if my photos suck.

where did i go wrong? Weird stockinette stitch

Can someone please tell me what the hell I am looking at? I feel like I'm going crazy but I swear like a few of these stitches are crooked. I checked and they're not twisted but when I pull the knitting apart the individual "crooked" stitches are kind of twisted inside? I don't even remember doing these few stitches differently and my gauge is always the same (I knit in the round). Someone please help I feel like I'm imagining it. And I don't want to frog this sweater again so I hope it's nothing too serious. (Sorry for the lighting)

where did i go wrong? sophie hood beginner attempt!!

hi! i am a beginner knitter. I jumped into the sophie hood and have probably started and frogged this project around 30 times over the last month (tension issues). I have finally gotten to the point where I have made about 9 increases and wanted to see if I had made any glaring issues that I haven't realized like twisting stitches. Thank you for the help!!

sweater question Is this possible to repair and is it worth keeping?

I am not sure where to ask this question.. I figure mending or people who knit.. Im not a knitter sadly. I want to learn but my question is .. how difficult would this light delicate wool pointelle knit be to repair? I bought it secondhand as "excellent condition" but it has quite a few holes on the sides mainly.. I really love it though 😞

where do I start? What to make with this yarn =.=

Hi! I have this pretty, textured yarn (20%silk, 80%cotton, dk weight) and I'm not sure what to make with it... because it is textured im not sure if i can go with a highly textured pattern? I like the pattern of marielle sweater/cardigan and above is a lace swatch. Do you think the texture means i need to just do a solid stockinette or can i do a quad eyelette pattern without it looking too messy. Any recommendations for a sweater

knitting tools question Is cotton really that bad for sweaters?

hey all! i'm asking this because i live in a country where yarn isn't easily accessible locally unless it's acrylic, cotton, or bamboo. it's also extremely hot here year round.

i really want to make my first sweater/cardigan but i'm very hesitant because i always see comments that cotton isn't good for that. i sometimes see wool brands online but it's a big commitment to buy them without knowing what it feels like in real life + color selection is small.

would love to know your opinion, thank you!

edit: thank you so much for all the help! i really appreciate it and i'm sure anyone who comes across this post will as well! different types of yarn isn't always accessible (also extremely expensive !!) to a lot of people so we sometimes have to make do with what we have. and idk unfortunately for someone who lives in a hot climate, i still prefer sweaters so i'll definitely take all of this into consideration in my next knit project. thank you!
